Alice in Wonderland proved this frame that it’s no one-weekend phenomenon. The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaboration had audiences coming back for more. After holding extremely well throughout the week, the Disney film dropped a scant 47 percent its second weekend in theaters for an additional $62 million. It’s 10-day total now adds up to $208 million — besting 2005′s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to become Burton’s highest grossing film. A good 13 percent of its dollars came from its IMAX 3-D screens.
Alice’s release far outshone any of the newcomers, with Matt Damon’s Green Zone being the best performer of the bunch. Despite coming from Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass, this Iraq war drama didn’t connect with audiences anywhere near as well as the duo’s previous collaborations. The Universal film cost $100 million and only opened to $14.5 million, a gross below even the studio’s modest expectations going into the weekend. She’s Out of My League nabbed the third spot for the frame, with a better-than-expected Saturday that gave the R-rated comedy a $9.6 million opener. The Rob Pattinson starrer Remember Me bowed in fourth place for the frame with an $8.2 million take. The inexpensive film shouldn’t cause Summit Entertainment much grief, but it is clear that the girl power that adores Pattinson as Edward Cullen chose to sit this dour drama out. Paramount’s Shutter Island rounded out the top five. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring thriller added another $8 million to its cume, putting the film’s total take at $109 million.
Fox Searchlight’s Our Family Wedding opened in the sixth slot for the weekend, grossing $7.6 million. And Avatar, near the end of its box office run, is still holding in theaters in a big way. The movie only dropped 19 percent despite being in a fraction of 3-D screens since Alice in Wonderland‘s release. Adding another $6.6 million to its cume, the film’s enormous domestic take now stands at $730 million. Overture Film’s R-rated cop drama Brooklyn’s Finest dropped like a rock in its second weekend. The film, starring Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke, fell an astounding 68 percent, to gross only $4.2 million. Its two-week gross stands at a paltry $21 million. Spots nine and 10 went to Cop Out and The Crazies. The two R-rated films grossed $4.2 million and $3.6 million, respectively.
The theatrical movie business was on the rise for its third weekend in a row, thanks largely to Alice and audiences’ obsession with 3-D fare. The next few weeks will bring a crush of 3-D product, including How to Train Your Dragon and Clash of the Titans, which is sure to complicate the marketplace since there’s already a shortage of 3-D screens. Still, we will likely see strong box office numbers throughout April. Happy moviegoing!

Remember Me’s not doing so well because of the idiots spoiling the ending.
No, Remember Me is not doing well BECAUSE of it’s ridiculous and cheap ending.
Remember me is not doing well because Rob is not a vampire and Emilie is not a crazy b**** lost in the woods looking for her baby.
No, RM is not doing well because Pattison is NOT ALL THAT!
For a small budget, somewhat limited release film, Remember Me is doing quite well because the issue of 9/11 was handled tastefully, the story is well crafted, the acting quite good, and Robert Pattinson is definitely all that.
Remember Me’s ending was touching, tasteful and made me feel connected to the past again. The acting in it, from the entire cast, blew me away. The overall theme of little things matter was beautiful and very real.
Matt Damon = Overrated
keep doing Bourne movies buddy
I took my friend who wanted to see it to the press screening last week with me. I had absolutely NO DESIRE to see the film & I was trying to figure out in my head where they were going with it in the last 15 minutes, like HOW IS THIS GOING TO END?! Then I was like OMG. I mean, besides that ending…its a VERY DEPRESSING film. I mean, who exactly is is targeting!? Its very dark for Robert pattinson tween fans, yet the character of his turtored msunderstood sister is supposed to reflect them on some level?? The messages are far too dark for the teen audience & I doubt that half of them were even born or remember Sept. 11th AT ALL. Its an interesting spin but still WAY DARK & DEPRESSING like many of those other post 9/11 movies that came and failed in the past. And it also proves that Robert pattinson can NOT support any movie yet other than the TWILIGHT series. once he is done with Edward his careeer is going to have a rocky few years. SOAK IT UP WHILE YOU CAN!
Good point about the age of the tweens who weren’t born 2001.
That’s kind of the point, Sally. The movie isn’t just for tweens. It is for all of us, tweens included, not to forget the events and to honor the memory of those who died just going through their normal day, harming no one. Not a bad reminder.
Do you mean that there are people out there revealing that Robert’s character gets killed in the September 11, 2001 attack on the WTC? Wow, that’s a pretty crappy thing to do.
I have no desire to see this film, but still, you are one special kind of loser.
Thanks a lot, jackass.
Ha ha nice Mama Monkey. Glad he dies. Can’t stand him. I was so happy when he died in HP4.
Remember Me is doing BADLY because movie-goers who have good taste in movies DON’T waste their hard-earned money on a crappy movie like Remember Me that stars a crappy wanna-be ‘actor’ like the loser robert pattinson.
Because you are the end-all-be-all of taste in film, right? Get a life and stop criticizing others for liking what they like.
Out of curiosity, have you seen Remember Me? If not, why comment? I can guarantee you that the movie is in far better taste than your comment and I have seen it.
Wow, another Iraq War movie bombing. How shocking. I’m a used book seller as well, and its the same with Vietnam books, you cant give them away. People dont want to see or hear ab out what they percieve as an American loss, end of story.
No, they don’t want to hear about those wars because even Americans are tired of arrogant American stupidity/imperialism:)
You do know that Hurt Locker just the won Best Picture Oscar, right?
that is why they chose The Hurt Locker as best picture at the Oscars….go figure!!
The Green Zone would be a hit movie if it didn’t cost $100Mil…The Hurt Locker at $11Mil proves you can make a war movie for a dime.
Actually, that would be 1,100,000 dimes.
What? I LOVE AMERICA!!!
Wow, Cop Out sure turned out to be a pile of crap.
No Remember Me is not doing too well because Rob Pattison isn’t all THAT.
She’s out of my league is one of my favorite movies because of the story. If you have ever felt like someone was out of your league(It might not even be looks that made them out of your league), If you have ever had feelings for someone but everything just went so difficult. Someone who did not seem compatible with you, but you still had feelings for them. Then you should see this movie. Seriously, they put a lot of heart in the movie. Like it was a sweet hearted romantic comedy, not just a jokester comedy movie.
)
Hahaha You guys are cracking me up on your Remember Me thing. It’s rather hilarious.
Alice isn’t Burton’s top grossing movie yet. Batman grossed like 250 million
Which Batman are you referring to? The orginal one from 1989 with Michael Keaton?
Oops, missed your comment there. I was thinking the same thing and here’s the proof:
boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Director&id=timburton.htm
Actually, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Burton’s highest grossing film. It earned over 474 mil worldwide. Alice in Wonderland has made over 429 mil worldwide.
remember me isn’t doing well because the twilight girls are addicted to edward cullen, not robert pattinson. this was always clear. now it is even more so. 8M opening weekend is really bad.
I agree. This separates the Rob fans from the teenage fans that only like him for being Edward Cullen. Remember Me should have stuck with the R rating, not put the Eclipse trailer in front of it, and put the 9/11 topic in the trailers so as not to SHOCK everyone.
It was a good film and the acting was very good. But it did decent. At least it didn’t bomb like The Green Zone.
But you have to admit, that isn’t a good sign for his future career. On the one hand, his Twilight fans apparently have no interest in seeing him play anyone other than Edward Cullen. On the other hand, non-Twilight fans are sick of hearing about him and seeing him and will probably still avoid him like the plague.
The guy’s going to find himself without a core audience demographic.
I am a Twilight fan. I love Edward Cullen. I went to see Remember Me because I also love Robert Pattinson apart from his role as Edward. I love his personality in interview, his sense of humor, his humility. The movie was extremely well done. I did not object to the ending because it was meant to be jarring and unexpected just as the actual event was jarring and unexpected. I think it is impossible to keep the whole shock value at the end though. The script was online. Every review you read gave away the ending long before the film debuted. That didn’t take away from the film for me though. The acting was truly good including that of Robert Pattinson. I disagree that he will find himself without a core audience. His audience may change as he grows beyond young adult roles. He’s an excellent actor and he is making some pretty gutsy choices. Bel Ami and Water for Elephants are both pretty major movies outside of the Twilight franchise. The Eclipse trailer in front of Remember Me meant nothing since it was released all over the web and on television the day before the movie opened. When you consider that the Green Zone cost 100 million to make and took in only slightly more than Remember Me which cost only 16 million to make, this small drama did quite well recouping more than half of its cost in just two days and this was actually riding on the back of 23 year old Robert Pattinson.
I agree Jimmy, and another reason people could avoid him is his hair style still to E. Cullenish for people to forget so quickly.
i knew that “Remember Me” was going to flop. It’s a slap in the face for all New Yorkers. I blame the writers as well as the non-American actors. Now some of Rob’s ‘fans’ are saying that it did well for an indie. Since when is a movie that opened on over 2200 screens and cost at least 15 million to market an indie? I’m happy for Depp/Burton. They are some of the few in Hollywood who make me still want to go see movies.
Everyone that I know that would even consider seeing the film decided to avoid it due to the (completley bizarro, comlpetely unnecessary) 9-11 reference.
Agreed. Without the crap ending, it would have done better. The ending is a turnoff to everyone except tweens who don’t live in the New York area, Shanksville or the DC area and who were too young to remember 9/11.
I completely disagree. Have you seen the movie Tarc, Lala, and Becca? It was handled so beautifully. They did not throw this ending in simply for shock value. It was the entire point of the film. Love the people in your life because you just don’t know when suddenly without warning and for no reason that can possibly make sense they are taken from you. It was trying to say we can’t forget the events of 9/11. It was helping a whole new generation of young people remember. For me it was a movie that needed to be made and it was very tastefully done.
16 million total budget, not 15m to market. It made back more than half its budget opening weekend, so it’s not as bad as all that.
I think it cost $16M just to make the actual film. Marketing costs are above and beyond that.
And in order for it to be truly profitable, it’d need to make back double what Summit put into it, including production and marketing costs. It has a ways to go.
To be profitable it has to earn 3 times what it cost, $48Mil….which it will with the DVD releases.
it cost 20 million
I LOVE TIM BURTIN!!!
This whole 3-D thing is a joke. All it does is jack up the price to try to cover up for an average movie. It can’t make the movie any better and I’m not paying extra to see it.
I agree, Bobby. And it’s sad that so many people play the corporate shell game, by getting all giddy over how new movies break box office records. That’s pretty easy when even matinee prices are about double the price of regular prices from even just 10 years ago. And then you add in IMAX and 3D ticket prices and a new movie better make more money than one that came a few years ago.
Sure, box office gross is nice and all, and the rich execs can go ahead and pop the bubbly, but the moviegoers need to use their brains and also factor in HOW MANY tickets were sold. If a movie has tickets that cost twice or more as much, that means only half the amount of people saw it when comparing an older movie that made the same amount of money.
Even a movie like Avatar, which has obviously made a lot of money, still isn’t close to the number of tickets sold for Titanic. So, in several years, when tickets are about 20 bucks each, those movies better break current records.
Why do people do free PR work for these movies? They act as if they’re going to get something out of it.
I agree with you no some level, since I am prolly one of the FEW who would argue Burton really didn’t DO MUCH with 3-D in ALICE other than when she first arrives in Underworld. I mean, does any other scenes stick out in ANYONE’s heads as being 3-D-riffic? SADLY NO. The gorgeous costumes, & outrageously colorful CGI masks a very disappointed let down of the 3-D effects. I have already seen Dreamwork’s HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and it was cute and they thankfully incorporate more of the 3D technology to make it enjoyable for both parents & their kids. Yes, its going to be hard for that cartoon and CLASH OF THE TITANS to slice the theaters chains’ number of screens, but kids are off that week for Easter break, so the weekly box office numbers should buoy HOW TO TRAIN to be a hit during the days, and let CLASH have a good number of screens at night. if they’re smart…
3-D is the way to go for the future….finally its caught on after all these years…and people are willing to spend big bucks to be entertained….
Yeah, but it cuts down on film pirating. That’s why it has such appeal. I don’t think it’s going away anytime soon. Pretty much every big budget film that’s being released this year and in the coming years are going to be in 3-D.
I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D, and the the 3D was horrible. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had seen it in 2D. I’d see the movie again, but I’d see it in 2D.
I keep on wanting to see it but unfortunately things keep popping up.
People are buying lots of tickets for Alice in 2-D. It is a lot of fun!
Is ‘Alice’ really Tim Burton’s highest grossing film ever? You might want to check with Batman (1989), EW.
So glad Remember Me bombed. Now maybe everyone will stop over-hyping Pattinson.
Not likely with Eclipse right around the corner. I am a Rob Pattinson fan. I loved him as Edward and also love him in Remember Me, but I do wish the spot light was off of him a bit. It has to be a lot of pressure on a young man relatively knew to the whole Hollywood craziness. I don’t think he has been overhyped by the studio, but he is certainly in the media spotlight. I also don’t agree that Remember Me bombed. No one expected it to be another Twilight phenomenon. It is an excellent film with a respectable box office for the first weekend and his individual peerformance has been praised by his co stars and by the majority of reviewers.
Um, lemme see if I can break it down for you…just because someone acts in a movie does not prove they’re a good actor. Just because someone records an album doesn’t mean they can sing worth anything. Just because someone is famous doesn’t prove they have any talent whatsoever.
Rob can NOT act. He was chosen by his physical looks alone. He’s what we call a BAD ACTOR. Kristen Stewart has a double whammy in the fact that she’s both a BAD ACTRESS and a WET MOP. But at least she looks like she takes showers, unlike Rob. If either of them are going to have successful careers of any meaning, it will be much later down the line and will require significant amounts of acting lessons! Rob’s acting is PAINFUL to watch!
This is coming from a Twilight fan. I like Edward, and I’ve seen the movies multiple times in theaters, but the young actors in the movies ARE TERRIBLE. (Taylor Lautner is surprisingly better than either of the leads, but that’s for another review.) You have to watch some movies with good actors and then you’ll understand.
Robert Pattison’s “star vehicle” came in BEHIND an R RATED MOVIE means that like Megan Fox he himself is NOT a Box Office Draw, but has lucked into appearing in a popular movie series.
Just like Orlando Bloom. Although Summit wasn`t stupid to invest hundereds of millions in Pattinson vehicle unlike the studio that had Bloom tank its $180 mio budget Kingdom of Heaven.
Tru Dat.
We’ll see. This is not a mainstream, fun for the family film. It is going to have a smaller audience. Let’s see how he does in the next few movies he is starring in before passing judgment. This was a small film. I don’t know what Summit was expecting. This might be far more than they hoped for. If nothing else it certainly proved that his acting ability transends the world of vampires and werewolves.
Please robsessed stop making this film look like an intellectual piece when the movie is full of cliche. Sorry but the move isn’t good. Too much daddy issue and too much constipated faces from rob.
I waste my time watching it. This ain’t even a real drama. The only interresting thing in that movie was the little girl and cooper.
Summit was expecting to make alot of money with the rating and rob image. But it bombs. It would have been worst if his robsessed fans didn’t see the movie at least tree times.
“She’s Out of My League” while not a great film, and the ending was kinda ridiculous, was actually pretty funny.
Cop Out sure turned out to be a pile of crap.
Remember Me didn’t do well because it was only in 1000 theatres compared to ALice’s 3000+. it’s called simple math and entertainment reporters make stories without giving the real facts away.
Sharlin,
Theatre Count is NOT a foregone conclusion to the gross of a movie (which gets proved time and time again)
For example, Fahrenheit 9/11 opened in 868 theatres and grossed 23 million while The Green Zone opened in 3003 theatres and grossed 14 million.
Please. Look at its per-theater average. If theater count was stifling the overall number, you’d see a through-the-roof PTA as a ton of fans packed into a limited number of theaters. Stop using that as an excuse for RM tanking, it’s embarrassing.
Remember me was in 2,200 theaters and each theater wasn’t filled as shown by the per-theater-average. It’s not a small Indie movie either, they spent over $16 million just on the movie alone, not to mention advertising. It’s a normal main-stream movie. A small Indie movie costs $2 Million to make. And Robert Pattinson is not a bad actor but he isn’t going to be nominated for an Oscar for this role. You twi-hards need to get with FACTS and reality instead of trying to spin this into some type of success story.
I agree with everything you said, except Robert Pattinson is most certainly a bad actor.
its in 2200 theaters dont make stuff up idiot
Remember Me had no special effects, a sad storyline, Rob NOT as Edward Cullen, pandering to the teens AGAIN, a controversial ending, and bad reviews. It is amazing that it made this much. Plus it was competing with a 3D vehicle.
However, this was a very good movie. And just because for all these reasons, noone came out and supported this project, that was low budget anyway, doesn’t mean that the actors did not do a great job. Rob, Pierce, Chris, Ruby, they all did really good jobs. You can hate Rob all you want, but you cannot tell me that he did not do a good job, especially in the boardroom scene.
So Rob supporters vs. Rob haters. The supporters are gonna say what I just said and the haters are going to gloat today. But it still does not take away from the fact that this movie is not this horrible thing that the critics are making it out to be. And Rob has great potential with his acting.
You call $16 Million+ a low-budget? Most mainstream movies are made with around $15-25 Million and seen at 1600-2500 theaters. A low-budget/Indie movie is made at $2-3 Million and shows in like 10 theaters.
Well here are some comparisons. Alice cost 200 million, Green Zone 100 million, Shutter Island 80 million. There should probably be no comparison between a low budget 16 million movie and these films, yet here we are comparing. Remember Me is a small film and it made a good showing for a small drama. In fact it has out grossed The Last Station, Helen Mirren’s Oscar nominated film which has been out for 9 weeks and is neck and neck with A Single Man, Colin Firth’s Oscar nominated role which was released 14 weeks ago. Even Out of Her League and Cop Out had a 20 million budget and opened in more venues. I am not saying that this is an Oscar worthy performance. I am saying it is a good film with a strong cast and if you haven’t seen it don’t assume Rob Pattinson didn’t carry his weight in it because he definitely did. Even critics who didn’t care for the movie in general praised Rob’s performance.
Thanks Heather…well said and my thoughts exactly. The critics couldn’t wait to bash Rob, they wanted him to fail. I don’t get that at all. Why? Because he had a huge success in Twilight? It’s been stated MANY times over that he never signed on for all that the Twilight Saga has become. I thought he did an amazing job in RM, and to me this seems more like him. The small indie type vs. the big blockbuster and I applaude him for not just jumping on to any role just for the money. He took a risk and went for something opposite of the what the tween Twilight fans would see. In the end it was smart to branch out and not let himself get caught in the stereotype. I seriously don’t think this is going to ‘hurt’ his career. He has 3 non-twilight movies coming out in the next year so I guess we’ll see. He’s still very young so he has plenty of time and the talent to back him up.
I wonder how many of those that are bashing him have actually SEEN the movie and aren’t just listening to the ‘critics’……
Cherrie, I don’t think many who are criticising Remember Me have seen it. I was hoping it would earn 10 million this opening weekend, so it fell a little short of my expectations. Of course the actual numbers aren’t in yet and I don’t know how accurate the predictions are. Summit will definitely make money on the film and that is what they are trying to determine. Can Rob Pattinson carry a film on his shoulders and make the company money. He has shown that he can. We will know tomorrow what it actually grossed over the weekend. I think the movie was excellent, but it is a drama not a comedy. It’s about character development and not special effects. The reviewers let it be known that it doesn’t have a happy ending and some people don’t want to see a film that doesn’t have a pat and comfortable ending. Some are turned off by 9/11, maybe exactly why we ought to be reminded of it. I too think Rob is very smart in his choices. He is picking roles that are interesting and different and those that will help him stretch and grow as an actor. Little Ashes that just won the GLAD award was like that too. It had limited release and low box office but it demonstrated his acting ability. He is looking to be a serious actor not simply a celebrity. I think this movie again demonstrates his talent and will impress people in the industry. I believe Bel Ami and Water for Elephants will do that as well. I expect him to be around for as long as he choses to be and look forward to each performance.
Remember Me was in more than 2200 theaters, not just 1000. Some math, but not all just math.
Remember Me is bombing because Pattinson is an over-hyped, mediocre talent who thinks that he’s so accomplished at acting that he should wear a hat as an executive producer as well. Even worse is the shameless exploitation of a national tragedy to beef up an otherwise dour and unoriginal story. Maybe Mr. Pattinson should go back to James Dean School for a few more years…..
Actually he was given the exec producer credit because he helped with the pre production and post production of the film and with redoing some of the scenes in the script. He did not ask for it, they gave him that credit. And Rob has admitted that he doesn’t know if this is his thing, but is taking it one day at a time. And how do you know that he is a mediocre talent by not going to see the film? Hmmm … interesting. He never said that he was James Dean. Barbara Walters and Matt Lauer did. Check your facts before you speak ill of someone.
because you know what he ask for and didn’t ask for? Please get real.
Last week his fans were so sure that he was going to beat green zone because he was the reason why twicrap was a success. Look like he isn’t that good.
His fans have been trashing every other actor out there just to prove that rob was the thing but looks like he isn’t.
“Mediocre talent?” Do your homework before making asinine comments. See his previous work.
