Exclusive: 'Smurfs' casting scoop: Hank Azaria to voice Gargamel; Katy Perry takes Smurfette

This Smurfs movie is coming together quickly — and with some top-notch voice talent to boot. Sources tell EW.com that Hank Azaria — best known for the numerous hilarious characters he voices on The Simpsons, like Moe the bartender and Apu the Kwik-E-Mart owner — will lend his voice to the character of Gargamel, the evil sorcerer and arch-nemesis of the Smurfs.

Furthermore, pop star Katy Perry will voice Smurfette, while George Lopez and Alan Cumming will play two of the other little blue guys. EW.com has also learned that Jayma Mays, who plays guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury on Glee, will play the pregnant wife to Neil Patrick Harris’ character. Sony Pictures declined to comment. The film, directed by Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), centers on the happy expectant couple’s lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures. The movie will take place in New York City’s Central Park and is set to begin production next month.

Really? Katy Perry… lol… its like The Jetson Movie that had Tiffany play Judy. So sad.

Yeah, thinking the same thing about Katy Perry. Beautiful singing voice, but I saw her Proactive commercial and I’m plenty doubtful of her acting abilities. Especially since being a cartoon voice will require even more emotional output in her speaking parts.

beautiful what now? surely you didnt say she has a beautiful singing voice. Perhaps the studio that alters her voice does…

    • Katy Perry HATER

Sounds like it’s been going downhill since Neil Patrick Harris came on board. I was interested, but each story makes me less so.

Okay. I know I have the choice to NOT pluck down my $9.50 to see this piece of excrement, but I am seriously not looking forward to being subjected to the endless previews and trailers to come.

Seriously, Neil Patrick Harris? You have so much talent. You are the go to man for awards shows. Your stage talent and training could easily lead to musical adaptations for film, and you choose to be a part of some piece of garbage centering on whining blue rugrats who all gang bang one female skank while trying to finish building a dam by singing a song with no discernable words. “La, la, la, la, la” are not considered lyrics!!!!!

Two Words for you: Harold & Kumar….

  • Billie Jean

Wait…who is Neil Patrick Harris playing? Is he supposed to save The Smurfs or something?

I can’t picture Katy Perry as the voice of Smurfette at all.

  • chris

I always hated those little blue faggots then and I can’t stand them now. A million boy smurfs and 1 girl smurf, can you say “HOE”

  • wil

    Rachel Ray should be Smurfette.

  • Janice

Was anyone in Hollywood a child of the 80′s?? Putting the Smurfs in Central Park in NYC? That’s just sad, and wrong.

  • lame

Beverly Hills Chihuahua, i dont think i need to say anything else
