New Moon DVD: Chris Weitz speaks

We checked in with New Moon director Chris Weitz in advance of the DVD release, which — unless you are living under a rock — you know begins tonight at midnight. Weitz told us about his favorite extras in the DVD and talked about the future of the series. Below are some highlights:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What’s your favorite part of the DVD?
CHRIS WEITZ
: The fun part for me was to talk through it with Peter Lambert, my editor, who is a very funny man. We were able to discuss quirky moments we had while putting the film together. We had lived in a cave for so long assembling the footage, so we finally had a chance to get our yayas out. We didn’t say anything scandalous or mean about anyone, but it was fun nonetheless.

When did you manage to find the time to do this?
We did it in a moment during the press tour when we were about to go to a hoity-toity premiere in New York. I was in NY and Peter was five hours later in the middle of the night on a satellite line watching it from London.

What can you tell us about the six-part documentary?
Making this film was a massive undertaking to do in the course of this one year. There were so many elements that were new to the franchise: The really intensive CGI elements, the Italian shoot. I think it will be kinda cool for fans to see how the whole thing came together.

Is there anything fans will find surprising in the commentary?
They will probably be surprised that none of the kids are on the commentary. But they were on route between some crazy screening in the South on the way to the screening in New York, and the timing just didn’t work out. They will also probably be surprised how childish Peter and I are given the amount of responsibility we held.

Speaking of editors, we recently broke the news that they replaced the Eclipse editor with the editor on the first Twilight movie. What do you think about that?
In many cases, movies like this have two editors because of the sheer amount of footage. At the very beginning of the process, I think Summit expected me to have two editors. But I had a huge amount of confidence in Pete — we worked before on a cut of The Golden Compass that never saw the light of day — and in part because I felt I owed him one for sitting with me through my dark night of the soul. I also developed a tremendous respect for him and his judgment. He was the guy I immediately thought of to edit this movie. I also knew that we could handle the load of CGI and making this big tent pole movie and for me it was going to be better to work with one editor.

Any way you’ll direct Breaking Dawn?
If I amass some major gambling debts it could happen. I don’t mean to be glib about it. But here’s the thing: I think it’s gonna be two movies shot as one and it’s such a massive undertaking. I’ve now done two special effects-driven movies, which have almost broken my mind, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old son. There are so many circumstances that militate against me doing it. Even though I’m tremendously fond of Summit, the studio, which is kind of an amazing thing to say, of Stephenie and of the actors.

What do you think of the actors and all of their upcoming projects?
I’m really proud of Taylor and the success he’s enjoying now. I’m looking forward to all his action movies. I haven’t seen Remember Me but I’m looking forward to seeing it. I have already seen The Yellow Handkerchief and Kristen is great because she’s always great, so I bet The Runaways is going to be fantastic. I’m incredibly pleased for Anna Kendrick. How brilliant is that? It’s really gratifying. They are nice people, I like them and I’m happy to see them do well.

Glad you’re “proud” of Taylor and happy for Kristen and Anna’s success in other films, Mr. Weitz. Of course, you didn’t cast them in the Twilight Saga, Catherine Hardwicke did. TWILIGHT was gorgeous.

    • Kalie

Why such a rude response to something he said that was very nice?

  • G

    Movie still sucks.

  • LIVEITUP

Come on Kat… It sounds like he thinks a lot of these actors and is happy for them. I don’t think he meant to take all of the glory for their accomplishments!!

    • Diana

I don’t think that he was taking any glory for the actors. He had nice things to say about them. Period.

  • Ambient Lite

Weitz did a wonderful job with New Moon (keep in mind, the script MR barfed up is not his fault).
I was really happy with it, beautiful cinematography, very well done.
I really don’t know how anyone is still rallying for Catherine Hardwicke’s work after seeing NM. Seriously.

    • Stephanie

I’m still pining for Catherine because New Moon was not that great. And MR can’t be blamed for the script in it’s entirety.

“With Chris, I’d already finished the second draft before he came on board, so I did a round or two and handed it off to him, and he made changes”

      • Ambient Lite

Well if that was the case, I can only imagine what a heap of doo her first draft was!
I just don’t understand people who don’t agree that NM was an improvement for movies in the seires. I truly think it was MUCH better than Twilight.

      • Meg

I agree Ambient Lite. How people say Twilight is better than New Moon baffles me. CH did not do a good job.

  • Stephanie

I thought NM was very boring and passive. Twilight, at least for me, was engaging and just a lot of fun to watch. I love everything about it. The only things I actually like about New Moon are Charlie and Jessica, but it was established that they were awesome in the first one. New Moon just tried so hard to be something its not and it failed.

    • Lily

Totally agree, Stephanie. NM was a yawn. So happy Kristen is getting rave reviews for The Runaways.

    • Carissa

The reason why NM was boring and passive is because the book is that way. The only way the movie could have brought out more excitement than it did would have been to not follow the book. Chris Weitz did what he thought fans would want, and that was to stay true to the story. That is the weakness of the movie, it followed along too closely to the book.. which is the least exciting book in the series.

  • JP

I thought New Moon was way better than Twilight. I was really sad that Catherine wasn’t going to do it and was a little worried about Chris when it was announced he was going to direct. No movie will ever compare to its book, but I think he did an awesome job. I really wish he would come back for Breaking Dawn.

  • Kalie

I thought NM was a lot better than “Twilight”. It was visually stunning, the special effects were great, the soundtrack was fantastic, and even the acting improved. Everyone I know who has seen both movies enjoyed NM much more.

Chris, you did a really great job with the movie. I’m looking forward to checking out the DVD extras and deleted scenes. It’s too bad you’re not directing Breaking Dawn, because you would be the perfect director to bring it to screen. I understand though, especially with the critical lashing it’s (inevitably) going to get, whoever ends up directing it…you are probably worn out from the unjustified battering that New Moon received…I know I would be! You did a fine job with the film though and you should be proud.

  • me

Twilight was beautifully, both in the storyline & it’s visuals. I love all the books. I loved the stunning cinematograhpy of New Moon, but the storyline got wayy
lost in the translation. How sad…

    • Krishna

I agree with you, me. Twilight was gorgeous. I especially loved the rain soaked misty Forks, how the Cullens looked. It was just a great film. New Moon was souless. Just a rushed, choppy, reddish/pink, heartless yech. I’m passing on Eclipse and unless Catherine Hardwicke directs B Dawn, I’m passing on that too.

      • Carissa

I honestly can’t understand your love for CH. I guess you loved the likes of Waylen Forge, Bella losing her character, the bad acting direction, Edward and Bella falling in love without and depth to the process, and the lack of ‘I love yous’.

Is it possible that maybe you just like the story of Twilight better than New Moon?

  • me

    (correction of previous comment)
    *beautiful : )

  • Katelyn

I absolutely hated the way Catherine Hardwicke directed Twilight.

    • Krishna

Disagree Katelyn, but that’s what makes blogs interesting; all the diff. POVs. I loved how Catherine Hardwicke directed TWILIGHT. I hope she directs Breaking Dawn.

    • Carissa

Agreed. Her direction was so out of wack. While I love Twilight, I feel like she was too all over the place with her thinking. I wish she would have stuck to the storyline a little better.

Although, perhaps CH’s version wouldn’t have been so horrible if MR hadn’t wrote the script.

All things Twilight would be so much better without Melissa Rosenburg to botch the script. She needs to stick to Dexter.

    • amyrose

I agree she messed twilight up big time and new moon followed the book 100%!!! i wish twilight followed it more and i hope down the road someone remakes it!!although i didn’t like a few thinks about new moon i like it 10times better then twilight!!! i say stick to the books they are awsome and if you haven’t read them yet do so now!!!!!

  • G. Wells

I would have prefered to have had a three hr New Moon. The scenes they deleted would have definitely added to the movie. If they would decide to put it out, I would go buy it again.

    • LIVEITUP

I agree. I think Chris did an awesome job though. I watched New Moon this weekend with all the behind the scenes and special effects footage and I think he was just brilliant! I enjoyed Twilight too and think that the different directors captured the feel of the books nicely. I hate that so much was cut from each book, but I know it would be impossible to capture everything.

    • amyrose

Canada didn’t get the deleted scenes Chris forgot to add them to the DVD’s How stupid!!!!!! it was the only reason i bought the DVD and it wasn’t even on there!!!!!! I’m sooooo disapointed

  • lora

I love Twilight but NOT new moon

  • giselle aix

Chris Weitz does not look like a
vampire. He looks like a Tasmanian
    Devil. Personally, my friends and
    I love Tasmanian Devils.
