'Clash of the Titans' has a record-breaking Easter weekend at the box office; Tyler Perry sequel bows strong

clash-titans-samIt was a record Easter weekend at the box office thanks to robust performances by Clash of the Titans, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too, and the animated How to Train Your Dragon, which held on well its second weekend in theaters. All told, the three films combined helped lead the box office higher than last year’s frame, when Fast and Furious opened to $70.9 million. (Last year at this time was not Easter weekend.)

Clash of the Titans earned $61.4 million for the three-days, putting its total cume, including Thursday’s midnight showings, at  an estimated $64 million (per-screen average of $16,256). That represents an Easter weekend record, topping Scary Movie 4′s $40.2 million in 2006. Unfortunately for Clash, which was co-produced and co-financed by Legendary Pictures, the movie earned a weak B score from Cinemascore, which will likely translate into a steep drop-off next weekend. In contrast, Why Did I Get Married Too generated an A from Cinemascore, which means Perry’s 8th movie could build off of this weekend’s solid $30 million (per-screen average of $13,991). The film marks the second-best opening for a Perry movie, behind last year’s Madea Goes to Jail, which bowed to $41 million.

How to Train Your Dragon dropped only 33 percent its second weekend in theaters with a weekend take of $29.2 million. The animated Dreamworks flick has now generated $92 million after 10 days of release. It’s 3-D presence was still a factor as  IMAX screenings, which accounted for 12.5 percent of the film’s total weekend gross. Miley Cyrus’s Last Song generated $16.2 million for the weekend, which coupled with its Wednesday opening grossed $25.5 million in its first five days of release. And Alice in Wonderland generated another $8.2 million in its fifth weekend in release. With 3-D screens dominated by Clash and Dragon, Alice experienced its steepest drop since it opened. However, the film has now earned $309 million and has grossed over $700 million worldwide.

Hot Tub Time Machine landed in sixth its second weekend in theaters. The R-rated ’80s comedy grossed an estimated $8 million, falling a decent 43 percent to put its cume at $27.8 million. The Bounty Hunter grossed $6.2 million for seventh place and a new overall gross of $48.9 million. Diary of a Wimpy Kid landed in 8th place, earning $5.5 million to put its three-weekend take at $46.2 million. Ninth spot went to She’s Out of My League, which grossed another $1.4 million and a four weekend gross of $28.6 million. Shutter Island took another $1.4 million to put its seven-weekend gross at $123 million. Box office for the weekend was up 18 percent over the same frame last year.

Next weekend Tina Fey and Steve Carrell will prove their comedic mettle when Date Night hits screens. Stay tuned and Happy Easter.

Looks like the bad word of mouth is catching up with Clash, good I wish I had been warned before wasting my money

    • THX

Jeez, what did you think it was going to be like? You are to blame.

    • markus

Clash of the Titan is the best action movie of the year!! GREAT BRILLIANT & AMAZING

    • Celia

Not necessarily. I’ve heard mixed reviews from people. Some didn’t like it and others did. I plan on finding out for myself.
Sam Worthington is officially a gold mind! Terminator 4, Avatar, and now Clash of the Titans have all been successful at the box office. Clash has already earned back half of it’s production budget and I’m sure it will continue to do well.

      • Bland Action Hero

T4 was a huge box office bust which effectively ran the franchise into the ground. Also, no one goes to see a movie b/v worthington is in it – they go b/c of the hype and special effects.

      • Big Walt

T4 made over $350 million so it’s hardly a bust. I don’t think Worthington can really get credit for any of those movies though. He was nothing special.

      • Celia

I agree that Worthington might just be lucky. I don’t think he’s well known enough for people to go see a movie just because he’s in it. However, it’s really impressive that he’s a newcomer and
has already had a starred in 3 huge blockbuster films.

    • Ashley G.

I LOVED the movie, Sam Worthington is an amazing actor, and the rest of the supporting cast was great too!

    • kellybelly

Saw “Clash”, and I must say “eh”. I’m mixed about it. On one hand the special effects were great, but it was slow and boring (if you can believe it!)in the middle, and they messed with the myths, changing completely the character of one, and the outcome of two others. It was kind of plodding and it was missing something…heart. Also, there wasn’t a lot of interaction with the Olympus gods except Zeus&Hades. I liked most of the actors…I was just disappointed. And surprised. I really thought it would be better than it was.

  • Matt1

Thought How to Train Your Dragon would’ve held better (It’s the best animated film I’ve seen in a long time and really does use 3D to it’s advantage, unlike Clash).
Guess Easter Sunday is more of a church/bbq day than going out to the movies.

  • Moe

I don’t understand why Tyler Perry’s “Another Black Comedy” did so good. I honestly don’t understand people who like african-american humor. Newsflash, don’t waste your money on those movies when you can watch it for free on any african-american channel like BET.

    • did you come out of the holler long enough to get on the computer, jethro? this here fancy lookin’ screen sure does look purty, huh?

      • Moe

        It sure does, bill!

    • marjani

      Hey Moe,
It’s really sad in America in the 21st century that you honestly feel that the only movies people should go see are movies that cater to white people! your type of mentality is exactly what divides people. If you don’t see why Tyler Perry is making millions of dollars then too bad but obviously people of all nationalities are seeing his movies. STOP HATING!!

      • Moe

I’m not catering to whites. In my opinion, i find black comedies extremely unwatchable and I bet you one hundred percent that the MAJORITY people watching Tyler Perry movie are black and the other 1% are from other nationalities.

      • Will

Yes, Moe. Did you find that 1% in a scientific study or just from your racist mind?

      • Mare E

Well, I guess folks should stop going to rom-coms as you can see it all in repeats of Friends, Mad About you and the other yuppie shows of the nineties. PS, I don’t like either genre, but the sentiment is equally stupid in either case.

      • TJhooker

I agree with Moe up to a point, but its hard to argue with him. Tyler perry’s movies are ridiculous and cater to black people, but there are movies that cater to white people that are even worse. So its sad that such crappy movies have such a following.

      • Mike

When you say they “cater” to Black people, you’ve answered your own question. They “cater” to them, therefore it’s only natural that the ones being “catered” to show interest, no? Tjhooker and Moe, did you just miss out on the whole point of learning the ability of thought in HS? I say HS because I’m sure you thought college was the province of nazi-communist-vampire-liberals, thus avoiding it.

      • Black man

Im black, and uhh, Tyler Perry sucks. Every black person I know who watched the movie hated it.

    • Will

Moe, you’re really stereotyping and overgeneralizing. It’s wrong to categorize all “African American” humor as you call it into one group.

That being said…having watched Tyler Perry’s House of Payne I can say specifically Tyler Perry is a hack.

    • B-

It’s not a comedy. It is a drama that has some comedic moments.

      • Crys

Yes, it was a drama with some funny parts. And in the theater I was in, there was a split of blacks and whites. I saw maybe one person of another nationality. But I didn’t take a scientific poll. :-)

    • Dan

I thought the Three Stooges were all dead.

    • Book

I don’t want to read any moe of your comments.

      • KRG

        Now THAT cmment Was Funny!

    • TJhooker

I am pretty sure if I started a channel called “White Entertainment Television” that I would be deemed a racist by everyone here attacking Moe…….so maybe just get over yourselves and don’t get so worked up over someones opinion.

      • datruth82

Uh, TJhooker…every channel on TV is ‘White Entertainment Television’…when’s the last time you saw a mainstream show or movie where the headliners were minorities, outside of minority-specific films? Clash of the Titans didn’t have one African, African-American, or any other person of color in it. And, Africa was a MAJOR player on the world scene at the time this movie was set – in fact, Ethiopia as an empire was literally only second in the world to Greece. Every show, every commercial, every print ad in this country ignores people of other races, unless it’s specifically trying to target them, and only them.

      • TJhooker

        the Cleveland show

      • George

See comment above about the yuppie shows in the 90s. They made shows in NYC and never had a person of color for many, many years. I hear Friends had one in its final season because people complained. Hated Friends then, hate it now.

      • Crusatta

“Clash of the Titans didn’t have one African, African-American, or any other person of color in it. And, Africa was a MAJOR player on the world scene at the time this movie was set – in fact, Ethiopia as an empire was literally only second in the world to Greece.”

Was that a serious statement?!? You mean the time period where a giant Octo-rancor chases after a bunch of guys who didn’t exist? Besides it’s a Greek story, they wouldn’t have included Africans. The Greeks only included Persians in their history because it served as a warning to everyone else. Just like the Romans mentioned Carthage (the Africans they beat up on that weren’t from Egypt) because the destruction of Carthage was a warning.

      • iMare

“White Entertainment Television” is practically every channel on tv.
so, TJhooker, your point has not been made.
the only reason BET became a channel is because African Americans are not on television in mass, and definitely not on television in a positive light that captures real life, and for the most part, they are still not, even today.

      • Mike

Actually, datruth82, I’d say China surpasses Ethiopia as an archaic empire. How easily people forget the East when they try to overcompensate for Western bias.

    • Candace

You have got to be kidding me? You’re unabashed and blatant racism (I could care less if you are black) is unwarranted and quite frankly, distasteful. WDIGM 2 is not a black film, rather it is a film directed and acted by those who are African American, but this film is not specific to race – it is speaks to the issues that married couples deal with, irrespective of race. Please go somewhere else with that racist banter.

    • lala

F U C K you your just another hater yu bastard

  • Bobby

Movies like Clash of the Titans are going to give 3D a bad rep and people are going to be much more hesitant to shell out the extra dough. This is a perfect example of why I think this whole 3D experience is just going to be a passing fad.

    • Big Walt

It wouldn’t be bad if they only showed real 3d movies that were made that way. They converted Titans later because of Avatar’s success. so it doesn’t have any real 3D scenes. Scenes that were made to show off the 3D.

      • Bobby

That’s what I’m saying. It’s because of Avatar’s success that all these other movies are trying to cash in on the extra 3D prices by converting them to 3D after it’s already been filmed. In the long run it’s only going to give 3D a bad name and it will eventually go away.Hopefully sooner than later.

    • Sambo

A 2D movie converted to 3D just so we can watch 1D performances. Bobby, you’re correct – it’s a fad.

  • michele

Since How to Train Your Dragon only dropped 8% on Friday, I thought it would do a lot better than the $6 million they are estimating for Sunday. I guess Easter Sunday is family meal time. Most kids have Easter Monday off as well so that might make up for this drop. This is such a wonderful film and it is not for kids only.

    • Matt1

Way to repeat the exact thing I said 5 posts ago!

  • Kendis

Saw CLASH and it was not good. All that hype for 3D. Oh well, you loose some and win some. To those who have not seen it, save your money.

  • Barry

Hopefully Date Night will crash & burn next weekend. Why pay to see 2 non funny people when the least talented of the 2 (Fey) will be hosting SNL this coming weekend. I guess we’ll have to sit through more Sarah Palin bashing from that twit.

    • Will

Barry you’re a fool. I’m guessing your a Sarah Palin fan, too. Sad.

      • Barry

No you’re sad to be a Palin basher & a Nobama drone.

      • Mike

You just proved his point. A Nobama drone? You realize empirical evidence shows people with college degrees and graduates degrees support Obama FAR more than Palin, whereas the uneducated tend to like her. Oh, wait, College is for COMMI’S! I forgot. We should just all become ignorant hicks, like yourself, but somehow still remain the dominant power in the world. Hmm.

      • Candace

Well, I have my BS and MBA, so I guess that means I unremittingly drink the Kool-Aid and have no thought for myself and I will follow Obama until he crashes and burns this country into the ground – I am sure this is how you feel…You sound so educated.

    • Brett

Thanks for letting me know that she’s hosting. I forgot!!! I’m sure that wasn’t your intention.

Date night on Friday and more TFey goodness on Saturday. Couldn’t ask for more from my weekend.

      • Big Walt

The Office and 30 Rock on Thursday too.

    • Rich

I’m with you, Barry. I can get just as many laughs watching Fox & Friends or reading Sarah Palin’s Facebook posts… for free!!!

      • Barry

That was so “funny”, I forgot to laugh.

      • Mike

Barry, what are you, some dumbass Texas hick straight out of highschool? I would know, because I went to HS in Texas, and all of the dumbasses and wanabe cool kids always said “that was so funny, I forgot to laugh.” That’s the worst comeback for a person who can’t think of anything to say. Way to be intelligent and original.

    • RyRyNYC

Palin fans are pathetic in general for a magnitude of reasons no one needs to list again. But I must state that its sad we are the only nation whose politicians are public buffoons… Bush, Palin, Blagojevich, etc. Hate Chevez and Putin – but I will say this about them, they are not dumb hicks twiddling their thumbs spouting out stupid remarks like our “FINE” politicians do on a constant basis IN A PUBLIC FORUM.

  • Duane

LOL. You know Cinemascore is messed up when a B is a bad thing.

    • Jaime

While I have NEVER seen a Tyler Perry movie, and may never see a film by Tyler Perry, I felt it appropriate to address some of the criticism here. Specifically, from a poster named “Moe”. Moe, you are a waste of skin. I find your comments extremely offensive and you are so narrow-minded, I bet that the electric impulses in your “brain” run slower than dial up.

  • Matthew Thomas

Its sad that people went to watch the wrong 3D movie. Clash was a horrible movie by every standard and the 3D was even worse.

How to train your dragon was stunning, heartfelt and had 3D that was every bit as good as Avatar. Guya don’t waste your money on Clash like i did and instead spend it on Dragons.

  • jay wright

I wish I made a movie that grossed 30 million. Black , white , oriental or zombie

  • Perry Fan

I am not african american and I love Perry’s films. I was not dissapointed with “Why did I get married too”, it was powerful and very funny. I took my highschool girl, my married daughter and my son-in-law and we all absolutely loved this movie. People clapped after it was over. Regardless of the races that are going to this movie Perry is only seeing the color green rolling in film after film after film. Luv ya Tyler!!!!! Janet was tremendous in this film.

  • D

Walked out of Clash 20 minutes in. Gory for no reason, silly plot, bad special effects. Thumbs all the way down!

    • Bruce

You have obviously not seen the film.

  • Lori

Didn’t need to spend the extra $2 for 3D on this movie. Actually although the movie was ok, It was not great, not even very good. Hot Tub Time Machine is a better movie to blow $10 bucks on!

  • Rachel

Moe obviously has problems that require professional counseling. I’ve never seen such racist comments in my life on a message board. Moe…it’s 2010 and not all Black people or White people are the same. There is no “group-think”.

    • Nshi

Rachel, please delete your racist comment.

  • ryan

well even if it droppes 60 percent next weekend it is going to make a good profit, especially with other countries included which seem to save alot of movies theses days. Not too mention that Fox and warner Bros. have been pretty much unstoppable this past year. Paramount has done alright as well, but alot of movies that probaly just broke even or will after the first week in dvd release. I need to take my kids to go see dragon. MOE your a jerk.
