It’s a battle of the genres at the box office this weekend. What will prevail? Comedy or action? As of Saturday morning it looked like the Tina Fey and Steve Carrell’s Date Night won Friday night, with estimators predicting it grossed in the $9 million range. The 3-D swords-and-sandals epic Clash of the Titans grossed a bit over $8 million on Friday. How each film plays for the rest of the weekend is still up for grabs, with different box office experts using different models for the three-day frame. Either way, both should gross in the mid-to-high $20s for the weekend, with Clash expected to fall over 60 percent for the frame. That drop is only going to add fuel to Jeffrey Katzenberg’s fire considering the Dreamworks Animation chief sounded off Friday on Clash’s last-minute conversion to 3-D. Also helping Katzenberg’s argument is the fact that his animated flick How to Train Your Dragon seems to be holding in well its third weekend in theaters. The film is likely to fall in the 35-40 percent range for the weekend, with Friday’s number coming in at around $7 million.
Fourth and fifth place will also be a horse-race, with both Disney’s Miley Cyrus-starrer The Last Song and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too grossing around $3.5 million Friday. Last Song may drop around 50 percent, while Married is expected to fall a steep 70 percent. Tune in tomorrow for a full report.

Glad Date Night is doing good- awesome movie; also glad Clash of Titans is falling hard- total piece of crap movie
Come on Date Night, beat crappy Clash of the Titans!
i looooooved date night!
I heard Mark Wahlberg has an oh-so sexy appearance.
Less than a week ’til “Kick-Ass!”
Can’t wait!
Less than a month ’til Iron Man 2,which is gonna kick ass!!!
Its a really great movie. I saw it early this week. Can’t wait till it comes out to see it again.
Hopefully Date Night will be #1 and How to Train your dragon #2 (its a family movie so it can see gains on saturday and sunday). Clash of the Titans was a terrible movie and i want it to fall hard.
Seriously Nicole, feel free to understand how the boxoffice works. Dragon ‘likely to fall 35-40%’? You must be kidding. Sweety, it’s a kid’s film. Saturday and Sunday will be really strong and much stronger then last weeks when friday was the strongest and sat+sun were weaker. It made 7.1 on friday, it will rise at least 50% on saturday, so we’re at 10.6, probably closer to 11 on saturday. and on sunday, will fall around 30% to around 8 million. So we’re at 25-27 mil for the weekend. Meaning? It has a shot at number 1 which you didnt even mention cuz you think that it will make 17-19 million this weekend. Your predictions need improvement. And WDIGM 2 will make around 12. That’s around 60% this weekend. Last song with strong sat will make maybe 9-11 this weekend– around in the 30%’s drop. Again, learn how the box office works. peace
The article predicts that “Dragon” will likely fall 35-40% for the weekend over the previous weekend, not from Friday to Saturday (the estimate based on Friday’s numbers). Dropping only 35-40% is very strong for a wide release in its third weekend, and that was the point being made.
I know what the article says ms. Simpson. I agree, 35-40% is strong for a weekend drop. However, Nicole is saying how for this weekend, Dragon will fall 35-40% this weekend. My arguement is that Nicole’s prediction is wrong. So what you’re saying is irrelevent, Because it’s going to fall less than 20% this weekend.Aka 25-27 mil this weekend, unlike Nicole’s 17-18 mil prediction. DO you know your boxoffice? I’m right.
you are absolutely moronic. How can you be so arrogant to speak to the reporter who wrote this article, as though you have a better idea of how the box office works, especially when you’ve displayed only an inability to comprehend when you are reading, and make random estimates…Dragon most certainly will NOT be number one, no chance Idiot.
Good. Date Night was at least a lot of fun. Titans SHOULD have been fun, but was a dreadful, boring slog. Hopefully Dragon does well this weekend, it’s a real winner.
I agree: “Clash” was dreadful. It was worse than I ever thought.
Saw ‘Date Night’ and it was a nice escapism movie. How they got some A-listers [Mark Walberg, Ray Liotta] to star in smal roles is a wonder.
But for Tina Fey movies, “Baby Mama” and “Mean Girls” were better written.
Date Night was awesome!! I hope Steve and Tina do more films together. They had great chemistry.
Date Night was pretty hilarious. Tina Fey & Steve Carrell are fantastic!
Saw Date Night yesterday and it wasn’t bad except they could have toned the violence down a bit.
I felt Date night was ok. Not great by any means but ok and given the crap Hollywood is putting out so far this year ok is an improvement. If it beats Clash which is part of the crap I mentioned I will be happy.
Release the Crappen
Clash was really bad. The Bubo cameo was the only highlight for me. Memo to Hollywood: NO MORE REMAKES.
I can’t hardly wait for Angelina Jolie ‘SALT”
