Sony pushes 'Green Hornet' to MLK weekend; goes 3-D

Hold onto your glasses — Seth Rogen is going 3-D. Not only did Rogen transform himself physically to take on the superhero Green Hornet, but his movie will now be transformed as well — into 3-D. Sony Pictures announced today that it will shift its holiday superhero movie from its Dec. 22 date to the Martin Luther King Day holiday weekend of Jan. 14, in order to have time to convert the film successfully into the extra dimension.

Sony vice-chairman Jeff Blake made it very clear that this is no last-minute conversion, à la Clash of the Titans. Rather, the movie, from director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), just completed principal photography and has yet to be edited. Also, the special effects for the film haven’t even begun. Gondry, asserts Blake, is excited about the film’s 3-D prospects and shot the movie with a depth and scope that lends itself to 3-D.

The move to January gets Green Hornet out of the crowded winter 3-D corridor, when films such as Disney’s Tron and Warner Bros.’s Yogi Bear will battle for the limited 3-D screens. Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels will also open during the holiday season in 3-D.

As part of the date shifting, Sony is also moving Screen Gems’ Priest off its Jan. 14 date and into March.

Agreed! After being blown away by the 3D Avatar and underwhelmed with Alice in Wonderland and completely pissed-off by the 3D Clash of the Titans, I’ve decided I will only pay the extra $4 for movies that were actually FILMED in 3D!!!

For the love of god, please stop adding 3-D to movies that won’t benefit from being in 3-D. The movies are darker because of the glasses and much more expensive. Please stop.

I AGREE! 3D is horrible, unless done right by James Cameron standards. 3D is not healthy, Samsung (I believe it was them) actually released a study on the negative effects of 3D viewing. Avatar was the first movie I watched in 3D, had migraines by the end, and now I’ll only ever watch 2D unless it was filmed with James Camerons sh!t…

January/February releases are, for the most part, the garbage-bin for movie releases.
This does not bode well for the overrated Rogen.

My thoughts exactly. The 3-D is probably a bonus to help offset this thing tanking at the box office.

Yes because this worked so well for Clash of the Titans… BLAH why can’t 3D just go away?

    I hear there’s going to be a Glee tie-in!

Sony says it’s not a last-minute conversion, a la “Clash of the Titans,” but it still wasn’t filmed INTENDED for 3D. It’s still the same conversion process AFTER the movie’s been filmed, whether it’s done last minute like “Clash of the Titans” or not. So don’t expect it to look any less hokey than “Clash” did.

hopefully, it will be the same as nuClash, where not all the theatres get the 3d version. nuClash looked fine in REGULAR 2d!
(still doesn’t compare to the classic HARRYHAUSEN version, tho.)

    bombs away

Wait a minute. A few days there were reports that this movie was a disaster. A rough cut was screened for Sony executives who complained it was too campy and Rogen was awful in the part. Reshoots were even mentioned as well. Now its the director is starting editing it,the special effects work is now begining and it was shot with scope and depth that lends itself well to 3-D.

this movie is gonna bomb so bad…

This movie has been in development hell since 1995, and the studio tried so hard to make it work for a long time. Now that they managed to film it, it is still a troubled production.. yeah 3D seems like a quick scam to make money off of it as much as they can….

  • joits

yeah, moving it to the “dumping ground” that is january as a pretense that they’re converting it to 3D is just crap. they probably saw some of the footage and are trying to cut their losses. and by making it 3D, they can charge extra per person. i knew the moment that stephen chow left the production, it wasn’t a good sign.

This movie just can’t catch a break!

    • kelsey

My thoughts exactly! I’ve been waiting for this movie … grrr.

Ugh, Rogen is the biggest dork ever and a symbol of the dorkification of Hollywood. Him, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera. That’s the only answer to the suave Britt Reid of the ’60s morphing into the dorky Rogen. Meanwhile hunks like Paul Walker can barely get work. I’m like the Rush Limbaugh of Rogen, I hope he fails. This news is a good sign.

    • none2please

Er.. that’s cause Paul Walker sucks as an actor.. that’s the real reason why he can’t get more movies

  • Barry

They should have signed Mark Valley as GH.
