'Dragon' tops tepid frame: 'Back-Up Plan' and 'The Losers' underwhelm

Tags:

how-to-train-your-dragon-2Image Credit: DreamWorks AnimationHow to Train Your Dragon took the top spot at the box office in its fifth weekend in theaters with only an estimated $15 million — still good enough to top rival offerings from CBS Films (The Back-Up Plan) and Warner Bros. (The Losers). The Back-Up Plan took second place with an estimated $12.2 million, a dollar amount that doesn’t bode well for Jennifer Lopez’s return to the romantic comedy genre. The other wide release, the R-rated The Losers, couldn’t even cross into double-digits with an estimated $9.6 million and a fourth place finish. The two new wide releases didn’t help the box office for the weekend, which was down close to 20% compared to last year at this time, when the Beyonce Knowles-starrer Obsessed bowed to $28 million.

Third place went to Date Night, which in its third weekend grossed an additional $10.6 million for a 37% drop. The film has now grossed over $63 million since it bowed in early April. Kick-Ass, last weekend’s box-office winner, dropped a steep 52% for a weekend take of an estimated $9.5 million and a fifth-place finish. The R-rated superhero send-up has now earned close to $35 million after two weekends in release.

The rest of the top ten was dominated by holdovers—with the exception of Oceans, Disney’s nature documentary that opened on Thursday in honor of Earth Day. The G-rated flick took the eighth spot with $6 million for the three-day frame, with a total cume of $8.8 after four days in theaters. Spot six went to Clash of the Titans, which earned another $9 million its fourth weekend in theaters. The WB flick has now earned $145 million domestically. Sony Pictures’ holdover Death at a Funeral fell 51% its second weekend in theaters, earning an additional $8 million. The R-rated comedy starring Chris Rock has grossed $28 million since it bowed ten days ago. The ninth spot went to Disney’s Miley Cyrus-starrer The Last Song, which earned close to $4 million in its fourth weekend. The film, based on the Nicholas Sparks weepie has now grossed $55 million. Spot ten belonged also to Disney, with its Alice in Wonderland 3-D extravaganza still earning box office coin. In its eighth weekend in theaters, the PG-rated film grossed another $2.2 million putting its total domestic gross at $327 million.

The Back-up Plan made about what was projected. Dragons is a 3D movie with higher ticket prices. Give Jennifer Lopez a break. The movie is truly funny, Alex O’Loughlin is great and it may do well by word of mouth. You clearly hated it from the beginning and every headline has been negative.

    • Will

The Back-up Plan is at a 23% on rottentomatoes so the “hate” and negativity is pretty justified. It’s kind of precious you think it won’t drop hard next week.

      • sam

It’s the only date movie out there and the buzz on Alex O’Loughlin is great, so we’ll see. I haven’t been called precious since I was three.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

Wow I had no idea that $12.2 million in wide release was good box office…I supposed making $9 is the benchmark now?

      • Jose

Hey Sam, Back-Up Plan isn’t the only date movie out there, there’s Date Night, which has made double what Back-Up Plan will make in its entire run.

      • PNK

Why Did I get Married Too would be in the ‘date movie’ category… plus the previews shown with this feature all rocked!

    • the chief

Back up plan was mediocre at best. Jennifer Lopez will never be a major movie star and this movie will go straight to dvd next month

      • Drew

Selena, Out of Sight, The Wedding Planner, Enough, Maid in Manhattan, Monster-In-Law…. pretty sure Jennifer is major movie star. She may not have the box office success she used to, but neither do Meg Ryan or Brad Pitt or Winona Ryder – that doesnt mean they arent movies stars. 00-05 J.Lo was “it”. Quit hating.

      • whatevs

Spouting her entire resume doesn’t help your case. The only critically successful films are Out of Sight and Selena, while commercially those 2 and The Wedding Planner are a success.

I don’t really care for Brad Pitt, but even I know his box office power is as good today as it’s ever been.

      • Drew

Maid in Manhattan and Monster in law were huge hits as well. My point is that saying she’ll never be a major movie star is ridiculous because she already was one. You don’t have to like her, but dont disregard her accomplishments either.

      • PNK

@Drew – Brad Pitt: Inglorious Basterds, Benjamin Button, Assass. of Jesse James – all recent greats in money, quality, noms, or all 3. He’s not really Meg Ryan or J-Lo company…! And apparently he’s going to be in the Sherlock sequel. A different class, that Brad.

      • Get Real

Actually Brad Pitt fans – The Assasination of Jesse James, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button all demonstrate he is exactly where J-Lo is in her career. None of his overpriced movies are ever huge block busters

      • Get Real

Actually the Assasination of Jesse James amde a 15 million dollar loss, Sherlock Holmes is not a Brad Pitt film – he is as overrated as J-Lo and money wise pulls as much as she does in

      • Get Real

Brad Pitt and J-Lo need to retire.

J-Lo was only relevant because of her body and Brad because of his kids

      • Kaf

Uhh…actually, 7 out of 11 of Mr. Pitt’s last films have made over 100 mil. Like him, or not…he banks.

      • Kaf

As for Ms. J-Lo…she’s NEVER had a movie gross over 100 mil in her career. EVER. And, she’s never had a movie open to over 30 mil. Soooo…where’s the justification for her stardom, film-wise?

      • Get Real

The Assasination of Jesse James made a 15 million loss, and his films usually cost triple what J-Lo’s do, and they don’t ever bring back very much – I realize he has a few rabid fans but bringing in 100 million when his films usually cost 150 million isn’t great, its equivalent to J-Lo making 40 million, when production budget was 30 million. He is in the exact same place she is

      • Kaf

‘Get Real’, huh? Try these numbers on for size:

        Brad Pitt-
Basterds 313 mil world – budget 70 mil
Button 333 mil world – budget 150 mil
Burn After 163 mil world – budget 37 mil
Jesse James 15 mil world – budget 30 mil
Babel 135 mil world – budget 25 mil
        Ocean’s 13 311 mil world – budget 85 mil
Mr. and Mrs Smith 478 mil world – budget 110 mil
        Ocean’s 12 362 mil world – budget 110 mil
Troy 497 mil world – budget 175 mil

        Jennifer Lopez-
El Cantante 8 mil world – budget 15 mil
An Unfinished Life 18 mil world – budget 30 mil
        Monster-in-Law 154 mil world – budget 43 mil
Shall We Dance 170 mil world – budget 50 mil
Jersey Girl 36 mil world – budget 35 mil
Gigli 7 mil world – budget 54 mil
Maid in Manhattan 154 mil world – budget 55 mil
Enough 51 mil world – budget 38 mil

On the same level, huh? Keep dreaming.

      • Kaf

Btw, that’s a 200 million dollar average return on his films just over the course of 9 releases.

She’s averaging about 35 million on returns over 8 films.

Fan, or not, the almighty dollar sign is swinging towards Pitt’s corner. Even with his single loss with Jesse James. Of course, J-Lo lost money on nearly half of her recent releases, but you didn’t get into that too much, did ya?

    • Jennifer

Yeah, but ‘Dragon’ has been out for over a month, so even with the 3-d ticket prices (and not everyone is seeing it in 3-d), that’s not exactly shabby. Not great, but not bad either.

      • Lily

J-Lo is NOT a major movie star. Meryl Streep is a major movie star.

    • sam

And quoting rottentomatoes on a romantic comedy will always get you a score below 30%–it doesn’t mean a lot.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

I will concede to that, rottentomatoes has NEVER liked a romantic comedy as far as I know.

But IMDB has it at a 4.3/10 and usually romcoms get around a 6/10

      • whatevs

RT doesn’t have a bias against rom-coms. When Harry Met Sally, Hitch, You’ve Got Mail, and plenty of others.

Unfortunately for you, RT only has a problem with rom-coms that are crappy, which is nearly all of them.

      • sam

I guess that my problem with ratings on this movie is that so many of them come from people who hate Jennifer Lopez and have not even seen the movie.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

whatevs: but isn’t “crappiness” your own opinion? And I’ve seen plenty of romcoms that critics did like and I hated…”The Proposal” for one

      • Uncle Arthur

Umm, you guys realize RottenTomatoes is an aggregate website that collects reviews from dozens of critics and averages out the ratings, right? Some of you are referring to it as if the rating was only based on one person at one website. It’s not possible for this information to single out a particular genre, like RomComs, and say that “Oh, RT didn’t like it because they never like RomComs.” RT is not a person. It’s an average score based on many opinions.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

Yes Uncle Arthur, but critics in general don’t like romcoms. Look at the EW list of “Romcom cliches we want to retire” as a reference

      • Get Real

Yeah not to mention Rotten Tomatoes only ever selects good reviews from the movies that pay it for advertising. RT is a joke, a corporate sell out

      • sam

The women on IMDB gave it a 6 or above. Men brought the average down.

    • Urvy

Sam, bad word of mouth is spreading, quit defending an untalented diva and give up. Romantic comedies are for women and gays.

      • sam

Did you see the movie or do you just hate Jennifer Lopez?

      • Uncle Arthur

You should know that by holding such a narrow view of women and gays, that it only shows your inability to appreciate a good movie despite a supposed genre. If you avoid romantic comedies, then you are missing some of the best movies ever made, all of which were enjoyed by both genders. If you haven’t seen Roman Holiday, Annie Hall, Tootsie, Notting Hill, etc, then you’re missing out. Your loss. Just curious, what do you watch?

      • PNK

        It Happened One Night!!

      • tomm

Um, no we gays don’t just watch any rom-com. Straight men’s taste for slasher and ‘blow ‘dem up’ flicks isn’t up too high, btw.

    • mini

why do you assume everyone going on a date wants to see bad romantic comedy. As if most romantic comedies are bad. This girl sure doesn’t.

    • sam

Date Night is not a date movie. It’s a movie made by two hugely overhyped comedy TV actors. It should have done much better than it did, given how much hype it got, including Tina Fey on SNL. It isn’t a romantic comedy in the traditional sense.

    • kross

My son and daughter-in-law saw The Back-up Plan and said it was not very good and pretty cheesy. On the other hand, I took my two grandkids to see How to Train your Dragon and we all loved it. I would see it again in a second! Can’t wait for it to come out on DVD!

    • philip freeman

so you only read EW reviews? this movie was savaged by critics and viewers alike. its nice that J-Lo still has a fan club though

  • Will

So what’s the gross of How to Train your Dragon? It’s #1 but it’s gross is never stated in the article.

    • Kim

It says $15 in the first sentence.

      • sam

The article was changed after the comment was made. That is not very much of a difference between first and second when you take into account the higher ticket price of a 3D movie.

    • doasis23

With the time you spent responding to the article you could have found you qnswer on google.

      • Will

Yes I could, but a reputable website should still include the gross of the #1 movie in the original article.

    • Ana

It’s grossed about $160 million so far.

      • Bruce

It has grossed 178 mil so far.

      • kross

        $178,000,000 so far

  • TJ Spyke

I HATE these Sunday predictions. The last 2 weeks have both been WRONG. 2 weeks ago the Sunday predictions said “Date Night” was the #1 movie of the weekend, when the actual totals were released on Monday the #1 movie of the weekend was “Clash of the Titans” (by more than $1 million). Last weekend the Sunday report said “How to Train Your Dragon” was the #1 movie of the weekend, on Monday the truth came out and the #1 movie was “Kick-Ass”. I don’t mind sites reporting info, but they need to label these Sunday reports as PREDICTIONS instead of presenting them as facts.

    • Don’t Ask

the last 2 weekends, the top 2 movies were seperated by less than $1 million in the estimates, this week it’s over $3 million. I think it’s pretty safe to say Dragon will be #1 this weekend.
GO DRAGON! It’s nice to see a genuinly good movie making money! (for a change)

    • Jason

You do realize that these are the same estimates reported by other sites. They are studio estimates based on reasonably solid Fri & Sat numbers and then estimates for Sunday based on similar movies.

  • turbo

And KICK-ASS got its ass kicked… hehehe.. but seriously, that movie was as lame as this joke

    • Woot

I thought the movie was fantastic. So did everyone else I saw it with. It got it’s ass kicked because A. It’s rated R B. The 11 year old girl really put some people off.

      • turbo

I like how people are trying to excuse its failure to reach a wider audience by saying that it’s rated R .. the first MATRIX opened 11 years ago around the same time as this and it made 4 times the amount that this movie will end up doing and that one was rated R too.. face it, bad word of mouth got around and this garbage will soon be forgotten

      • Jose

Kick-Ass deserved the #2 spot over Back-Up Plan.

      • Bruce

The thing about the matrix is it appealed to all types of people. kick-ass appeals more to teenage boys.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Who are you and why have you stolen my screen name???

LOL I’m glad to see I’m reputing fame when trolls come on to try and impersonate me!

    • Nerwen Aldarion

PS: for the record, I’ve never cried myself to sleep over the comments on this site. I actually get tickled pink by some of the hate directed at me.

The fact that someone has decided to do a poor impersonation of me has me laughing my a$$ off!!

    • Clerj

      Nerwen. Get bent.

    • Nerwen Aldarion

      Why thank you Clerj

  • Correction?

    Isn’t The Losers PG-13, not R?

  • Kelsey

Um, The Losers is rated PG-13, not R.
We went and saw Oceans yesterday and the theater was packed. Absolutely beautiful film. Highly recommend it! It’s far better than most of the fictionalized stuff out there now.

  • Get Real

The Bounty Hunter is in the 2010 yearly top ten for Domestic Grosses

    • Nerwen Aldarion

      Seriously? Cite your source.

      • Get Real

        box officemojo yearly grosses

      • Nerwen Aldarion

Okay, thanks I’ll check it out

      • doasis23

Alice in wonderland has made over 300 mil this yr. The bounty hunter 60 mil from box office mojo.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

Well you are right Get Real, it is number 10 in the top 10 box office releases so far. It won’t be there long with Iron Man 2 and Nightmare and Elm Street coming out next week.

Hey I liked the Bounty Hunter so I’m glad it did decently

  • Adwina Lambert

    hasbeen j.ho must go!! tee-hee!!

    • sam

I’m not even a Jennifer Lopez fan and I think your posting of this childish post every time she is mentioned very offensive.

  • Steve

sam we know your really Jennifer Lopez. Your music and acting do suck, but it’s ok you still have your butt.

    • sam

I actually don’t–I saw her movie for Alex O’Loughlin.

      • sam

        And I am a woman.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

        @ sam

        Nice one!

  • Gerry

Sam almost sucks as much as Jennifer Lopez, which is a lot.

    • sam

That hurts my feelings. You haven’t even seen how I would perform in a romantic comedy or singing. It doesn’t seem fair to me.

  • Zach Reisfeld

Get your facts right Nicole, The Losers was rated PG-13. would have been better if it was rated R

    • tony compo

actually ”the losers” is a rated r movie…

      • tony compo

rated ”R” for retard..the movie sucked big time ..the only parts that was worth seeing was zoe saldana’s ass and tits

  • Nicole Sperling Please DO Your Homework

Nicole, mistakes like this shouldn’t be happening: “The other wide release, the R-rated The Losers, couldn’t even cross into double-digits…” I don’t know where you got your information from, but the film is definitely not rated R. I am not singling you out, however it is frustrating to see people who report for entertainment news who consistently have errors in their articles (I’ve seen this in other people’s articles as well). I think it is not only in your best interest, but the reader’s as well, for you to double check your work before submitting.

  • Will Harrison

Yeah, the Losers is definitely PG-13. I don’t think the film was marketed very much or very well. It was fun for what it is and $9m is pretty pitiful.

  • larry k

Still don’t understand why Kick-Ass hasn’t done better!I thought it was fantastic!

    • tipsy

because geeks who hyped it didn`t bother to see it again this weekend.

Don`t blame the audience that this movie didn`t target for not showing up. Blame its target audience for zero contribution to its repeat business. Yeah, they say it`s amazing, OMG the best movie ever, but when it comes to actually buying the ticket for repeat viewing, zero, zip, zilch, nada.

    • yrral

It is because things on the internet are not as they appear in reality.

Kick Ass has a B cinema score which is the same as the Back-up Plan. Not only that it heavily skews towards young male adults.

This plus the heavy ratings skew within the audiences surveyed means that people actually watching it do not like it outside that tight age/gender bracket. Think about this most of the people watching Kick-Ass on opening weekend gave it A but the small fraction outside that tiny minority was enough to average it out to a B. That means that the movie does not have legs with anyone who is not a fanboy/girl basically. Not to mention that age bracket has difficulty communicating with others effectively.

    • yrral

Another note, being a young adult I do not like Kick-Ass one bit an exception to the survey I guess.

It was a boring, drawn out, not as violent as advertised or rated, failures in simple plot logic, has FPS mode (DOOM, another failure of a movie), etc…

So even though I am biased against Kick-Ass the Box Office numbers seem to agree with me at the moment. Does not discount that Kick-Ass could rise or hold strong in later weeks but it typically does not happen.
