Smurfs casting update: 'SNL' cast members and John Oliver join voice cast

Thanks to us, you won’t have to spend any time racking your brain in the middle of next summer’s Smurfs movie thinking “Who’s voice is that?” We’ve got you covered. Joining the cast that already includes Katy Perry, Hank Azaria, George Lopez, and Alan Cumming are Daily Show’s John Oliver, playing Vanity Smurf; Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson and Fred Armisen as Greedy Smurf and Brainy Smurf, respectively; The Office’s B.J. Novak as Baker Smurf; and comedian Jeff Foxworthy as Handy Smurf. They join Pee-wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens, who, as previously reported by Deadline.com, will play Jokey Smurf. Also lending their voices to the little blue creatures are Wolfgang Puck — playing none other than Chef Smurf — and veteran character actor Gary Basaraba as Hefty Smurf. Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin will voice Clumsy Smurf. The rumors that Quentin Tarantino and Michael Cera are joining the cast are not true.

Neil Patrick Harris and Glee‘s Jayma Mays play the expectant couple who run into the blue creatures in the middle of Central Park. Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua) has started shooting Smurfs in New York City.

Presence of B.J. Novak and John Oliver = casting win.

“the blue creatures in the middle of Central Park” … wait, what now?

  • Scooter

they should get Chris Kattan to voice a role to continue his father’s (Tailor Smurf) legacy.

  • Quirky

Sounds like a great cast but I think I’ll actually miss the original voices still. It’s going to be weird hearing other voices come out of Brainy and Smurfette. Although I heard Jonathan Winters is still going to be the voice of Papa Smurf again so that’s good.

  • Strepsi

    …because everyone knows WOlfgang Puck’s voice. <_<

I hate casting like that, because the only purpose of it is to break your suspension of disbelief and say to the person next to you "that character is voiced by a REAL CHEF" — which then ruins their suspension of disbelief. I know, I know, it's just the damn Smurfs, but still, I hate casting like this.

    • who cares

      gahhhhhhh shut up, nerd.

  • LOL

Is anyone going to see this crap?

  • Michael

I’ll say this, if they’ve convinced THIS MANY people that the movie will be decent, to get this much star power, then I’ll probably catch it, just out of sheer curiosity, if nothing else.

  • Kacey

What?! Raja Gosnell has started shooting Smurfs in New York City?! Those poor little smurfs…

During the height of the Smurf craze in the 80′s, I was at a SF con where the Art Show had Smurf skin rugs and one of the Costume winners was a Smurf hunter complete with a trident. Count me OUT of this movie.

    This movie sounds atrocious.

I love the nerds, fanboys, and pretentious people with nothing else to do who slam movies like this, lol. It’s hilarious. They all think that someone said “Hey! Let’s make a Smurfs movie! I’ll bet we can get a bunch of 20 and 30-somethings to come out and see it!” Derrrrrr. It’s for kids nimrods. They don’t care (nor should they) what any of you think of it. I’ll bet you think all the tie-in toys that come along with it are aimed at you too. If you think it sounds stupid (and if you’re an adult, you probably should), then DON’T SEE IT. You’re not who they’re after. Given the names in the voice cast, I at least know I’ll be able to get through it when I take my 4 YEAR-OLD to see it….since you know it’s a CHILD’S MOVIE.

    • @ian the greatest father alive

Just because it’s a kid’s movie doesn’t mean it has to suck. Many ADULTS enjoy kid movies too. Sounds like this one will blow chunks!!!!!

    • Dicazi

Some of my favorite movies are kid’s movies. Still hate the Smurfs.

  • bill

It is not only a kids movie, it’s also for the mothers and fathers who grew up watching the Smurf’s cartoons on tv and can relate. I say see it. You and your kids will love it.

  • Heather

The baker smurf IS Greedy. I’m confused. (And apparently a big dork.)

  • Chris

This is all good, and I’m tempted by the movie, if only for NPH – but Central Park? Really? Since when do they live in Central Park? I always thought they live hidden in a forest far away behind mountains etc… Sad that US film makers can’t see beyond their country’s borders.

    • Nicole

I feel kinda sad for knowing this but apparently Gargamel chases them away from the village and they end up in Central Park. NPH and Jayma Mays’ characters help them get back home or something.
I’ll definitely see this, cause I love Jayma and Katy and i like NPH aswell, so this should be pretty good =D

  • KateMet

As long as they keep recycling treasured characters from 20-30 years ago to entertain new children, the adults who were the original fans are part of the target audience. Ask a 4 year old a couple years ago who the Chipmunks (or Strawberry Shortcake)were, and you’d get a blank stare. Now, they think they saw it first. I hate when they try to make live-action/animation hybrids of things I loved. I haven’t forgiven Garfield yet…
