'Kick-Ass' director in negotiations to helm 'X-Men: First Class'

As anticipated, Kick-Ass Director Matthew Vaughn is in negotiations to direct X-Men: First Class for Twentieth Century Fox. Vaughn had received an offer last week but creative control concerns stymied the progress of the deal. Over the weekend, however, those issues were resolved and talks resumed for Vaughn to helm the movie, which tells the story of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the other X-Men in their younger years, played by younger actors (no word yet on whether Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine since his character doesn’t age as the others do). The script comes from Jamie Moss based on Bryan Singer’s treatment.

The deal is surprising because Vaughn turned down directing X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2005 after he had negotiated a pact with the studio. Fox later hired Brett Ratner to helm the most successful of all X-Men films while Vaughn went on to direct the disappointing Stardust for Paramount and, just three weeks ago, released the fanboy favorite Kick-Ass.

Update: Fox sets June 3, 2011 as the film’s release date.

Please no Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is awesome, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

    Stardust ruled you d-bags!

    • Jill

      No it didn’t you d-bag!

      • Emily

Shut up Jill! Stardust DID rule!

      • Jimmy

        Stardust was pretty awesome.

I’m with Jill, Stardust was unimpressive.

      • mondo

Stardust was much better than X-men: Last stand.

I think the writer is talking in terms of BO and nothing else, otherwise we all know what a waste x3 was, and yes Stardust was a great movie.

So pretty much the only x-men movies that will ever be good are the first two… oh well, won’t bother to watch this one at all

Stardust was quite a success here in the UK – it was at number one for weeks and spawned a hit single. Also, rather more importantly, it was a really good film. Certainly not ‘disappointing.’ I wish Vaughn would continue to do his own thing rather than get stuck in the studio system, though…

    Stardust was awesome.

    Casting time!
    Dianna Aggron for Emma Frost
    Aaron Tveit for Cyclops
Keke Palmer for Storm? This is a really tough call to be honest.

Kick ass was awesome, if he does x-men its going to be the best yet!

This is the first time the X-Men franchise has had a worthy director, good to see Singer staying behind the scenes where he belongs.

    • Jill

Quite possibly, the dumbest thing anyone has posted here yet. A good indicator of how you know nothing about movies, and have rather idiotic tastes, I must say. The first time the franchise has a worthy director? Bee-yotch, please.

Stardust may have had a disappointing box office haul, but it certainly didn’t disappoint creatively. The Last Stand, on the other hand, was a load of overblown dreck.

It kind of did…if you averaged most critics reviews, it would be a B or B+. Which is good, but not great. And with Kick-Ass under-performing at the box office. Yes, I know it’s recouped it’s non-marketing costs, but that movie was hyped up to be MUCH bigger than it turned out. So it remains to be seen what effect Vaughn will have.

You mean critically, not creatively, if that’s your criteria for judging a movie’s quality. Creatively, it’s a fun, well-crafted film. He’s made three excellent films in a row, as far as I’m concerned. I prefer to form my own opinion rather than judge films based on box office haul or critical ratings. The fact that Singer has crafted the story, is producing, and that Vaughn dropped out until it was clear he’d have more creative control is a good sign for this prequel. Also, Mark Millar’s latest tweet seems to suggest he might be coming onboard as an advisor and indicates Vaughn will have his usual team around him.

I’ll bet you more people watched, liked, and enjoyed The Last Stand over Stardust.

      • Cliff

Just because Britney Spears has sold more albums than Miles Davis, does not make her songs better.

  • Ryan

Are they sticking with the movie version of events and positing Storm as part of the early class, or are they going back to the core five of Cyclops, Jean, Beast, iceman and Angel? No such luck, I’m guessing.

  • Landi

I liked Stardust and Kick-Ass both better than any of the X-Men movies. I’d like to see Vaughan continue to develop what I consider to be an interesting voice.

  • Carlisle

X-Men 2 still gets my vote for the best superhero movie ever. The Dark Knight comes a close second.

So if Vaughn can improve on The Last Stand, I say give it a shot!

  • Damon

    I want a Rogue movie..lol

    • Leslie

She was always my favorite character in the comics & TV series, & I wish she hadn’t been so lame in the movies.

  • Brian

It should be the original five, no Wolverine. Just because he’s the most popular character doesn’t mean that he should be in every movie. But in my opinion nothing could top X-Men 2.

  • Chad

Take a stand for originality. No more prequels, reboots, or remakes.

Send the message to Hollywood that we’re not sheep, we’re not stupid, and we’re not going to put up with this garbage anymore.

Demand original movies with original content! Not more of the same.

    • Dakota

good luck with that one buddy. originality isn’t what really sells anymore.
