Image Credit: Everett CollectionTwentieth Century Fox announced today that they will make Rise of the Apes, a contemporary origin story of the Planet of the Apes saga, for release on June 24, 2011. The studio will partner with WETA Digital to employ the groundbreaking technologies developed for Avatar, rendering photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors. Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) will direct from a screenplay by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.
Rise of the Apes is set in present day San Francisco where man’s experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence of apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark will produce.

Could be interesting…
sweet, I’m a massive fan of planet of the apes and hopefully this one is better than the last
…and it could suck.
Genetic engineering? Yes, this will be bad. Possibly awful.
definitely suck
They should then jump to quickly remake ‘Planet of the Apes’ as well.
No Mark Wahlberg in this one. That’s all I ask. Nothing against the guy, but he ruined that last one.
Wahlberg didn’t ruin the last one; Tim Burton did. He should stick to murder fantasies. Science fiction is NOT his genre.
I liked it. I wanted a sequel. Call me a whore, but I liked it.
why would we call you a whore?
Totally agree. That movie was a hot mess.
Tim Burton made a two hour cr@pfest.
haven’t they already made enough of these movies. come on hollywood think of something new.
and since probably all the apes are going to be avatar-ized then the movie is going to look terrible. at least Burton made the actors be in the make up and stuff. now it is going to be all cartoony
“Origin story of the Planet of the Apes saga.” Wasn’t this already established in Escape From Planet of the Apes (excellent) and then most importantly Conquest of the Planet of the Apes? Too bad the Century City complex where Conquest was filmed has been built over or they could have used it again. It would have been a nice little nod to Conquest.
Yep, they already made this movie, and it was “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”.
Actually, most of the Century City locations are still there. And as I recall they also shot several scenes at UC San Diego which, ironically enough, was initially designed as a ‘riot proof’ campus.
And, yeah, genetic engineering kind of ruins the entire circularity of the original cycle. That circularity was the only saving grace of changing author Pierre Boule’s ending in the original book. Tim Burton’s version’s only saving grace was putting that ending back in.
Nothing will ever be better than the original Planet of the Apes with Charlton Heston. Nothing after, not one of them was nearly as good. Find something new to do; you can’t make it any better….
Yeah Charlton Heston but for me those movies were all about Roddy McDowell (except the one he wasn’t in of course!). I loved Cornelius.
Think about it. The original was over forty years ago and it’s still the best. Chuck Heston will probably roll over in his grave when this one is made.
Yay, another remake/sequel/prequel that absolutely no one has been asking for. Thanks, Hollywood!
This is the kind of thing that shows how uninterested Hollywood is in making art. Instead of employing some talented new screenwriters to come up with something fresh, they just go with the same old thing – a sequel!… I know it’s an industry and what should I expect, but it’s just a shame to know hundreds of millions of dollars are being put into something that, at best, is going to be mediocre.
NOOOOO!!! Whyyyyyyy?!
I have a soft spot for the third one… Escape from Planet of the Apes. But this is gonna be a hot mess – they’re using computers for the chimps. Lets get real, based on the probable budget for this film they’re not gonna get the quality Avatar did!
Escape from the Planet of the Apes gave us “grape juice Plus”.
I they could just combine this with The Human Centipede they might really have something here.
