The Thai film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives won the Palme d’Or this evening at the Cannes film festival, while the Best Actress prize went to Copie Conforme (Certified Copy) star Juliette Binoche. The Cannes jury, which included Tim Burton, Kate Beckinsale, and Benicio del Toro, split its Best Actor award between two performers: Biutiful‘s Javier Bardem and La Nostra Vita‘s Elio Germano. No English language films received any major awards, including Mike Leigh’s Another Year, which was widely acclaimed by critics, and Doug Liman’s Fair Game, starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. The rest of the winners are listed below:
Grand Prix (runner-up): Des Hommes et Des Dieux (Of God and Men), Xavier Beauvois
Best Director: Mathieu Amalric, Tournée (On Tour)
Best Screenplay: Lee Chang-dong, Poetry
Camera d’Or (first feature): Año Bisiesto (Leap Year), Michael Rowe
Jury Prize: A Screaming Man (Un Homme Qui Crie), Mahamat-Saleh Haroun

Juliette Binoche may be the world’s most underrated actress (and the world’s most underrated beauty). She is so natural. I wish the U.S. had actresses of Juliette’s age who were willing to tackle complex roles–even if the character (she plays) is unlikable.
We have Kate Winslet. I know sh’s British but she is a pretty good actrice.
Javier Bardem for the win. It’s hard to get a girlfriend in my town ,most of them like my money more than like me.Ijust want to find my true love.so i uploaded my hot photos on Meetmillionaire . c om under the name of sammy561.It’s the best club for seeking young millionaires and their admirers .if you girls see this comment,i hope you will check my photos out there.maybe you are the one who i’m looking for!!!.
The sad thing is, actresses of Ms. Binoche’s age (46) here in America don’t get the chance all that often to show what they can do. Our film industry is more interested in the next nineteen year old hottie than the next great mature role.
I think it’s more a lack of such complex roles being written than finding people to play them
Javier Bardem for the win.
Love Binoche. Love Bardem. Mr. Karker, did you see Uncle Boonme. Just wonder what your thoughts are on it. I can’t help but wonder if the win was partially motivated because of the turmoil going on currently in Thailand.
Sorry. My question is obviously directed to Mr. Karger. Sorry for the misspelling.
Way to not mention who directed the winning film…obviously I can and will Google it, but it seems like an important detail to leave out.
So it was Apichatpong Weerasethakul! Good for him. I’ve seen a couple of his movies and they’re always interesting.
Will Boonmee get a US release?
french festival,french actresses always :boring
gainsbourg, binoche so overrated and not so popular here in france
Im sorry but can someone please explain to me what is so damn special about Kate Beckinsale? I mean she isn’t exceptionally attractive IMO and hasn’t done a whole lot of acting worthy enough to merit much of any sort of recognition, let alone serving on the Cannes Jury!
