'Captain America': Dominic Cooper negotiating to play a young Howard Stark

dominic_cooperImage Credit: Jo Hale/Getty ImagesThis rumor has been making its way around the Web since rising British star Dominic Cooper himself told Salon that he’s on deck to play Howard Stark, aka Iron Man’s dad, in Captain America. We checked with Marvel and per usual, the studio won’t confirm, since a deal isn’t yet completed. But sources close to the movie, set to begin shooting in London in July, have said that Cooper, best known for his roles in An Education and Mamma Mia, is negotiating to play the young version of the character portrayed by John Slattery (Mad Men) in Iron Man 2. How big the role will be is unknown, but Cooper does seem to have the charisma to pull off the dapper character in Joe Johnston’s adaptation of the popular comic book hero. (Though couldn’t they have just dyed Slattery’s hair black and let him have a go? It’s hard to be cooler than Slattery.)

Yeah, Slattery is awesome. I was happy to see him turn up in Iron Man 2.

Captain America will hopefully be a great movie.

    • Helen

John Slattery is not old enough to be Robert Downey Jr’s dad in the first place.

  • krayzeman

But since it takes place in World War II I think Slattery would’ve looked to old…

    • Steve

      too*

      Idiot.

      • Krayzeman

Lol. Who the hell corrects peoples grammar on posts?? You cant be serious. Are you a teacher?? This ain’t school and we aren’t getting graded so I think people who read can pretty much get the point.

        Idiot.

  • Emma

Hold the phone! Does that mean no Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America? That is not cool.

    • Phil

Captain AMerrica is set to take place during Nazi Era WWII. The ONLY chance Iron man, AKA Tony Stark has of showing up in the movie could be towards the end, or after the credits like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury did in the first Iron Man. Captain America was NOT an original member of the Avengers but was found by Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp & Iron Man frozen in ice decades after what should be the climatic scene in the Captain America movie when Captain America is shot of the sky in pursuit of the Red Skull.

    • Steve

Emma… you are a complete moron. It takes place in the 1940s stupid.

      • Jace

Before you comment on someone else’s grammar, fix your own. I read your reply to krayzeman. It should be: “It takes place in the 1940s, stupid.” Notice the comma?

  • BrandonK

I’m sure Slattery could have pulled it off. As much as I like Cooper, he doesn’t look anything like Slattery. Consistency, folks!

    • Steve

Hey BrandonK… it’s a freaking movie. Get over it.

  • steelerdaddy

Emma, Captain America is set timewise during World War II. RDJr. just flat out wouldn’t work.

  • Annette

Why can’t Americans play Americans! I hate when foreign people are cast and they have horrible American accents. It’s the same when Americans try to be some sort of European.

    • J.

      Like when Americans play Persians?

      • harry

ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

    • Rick

Since not a frame of it will be shot in America, and an American won’t be the title character, why call it “Captain America”? No point really.

and yeah, Gyllenhall playing a persian was stupid, so why make the same error twice?

      • O

Chris Evans is playing the title character. He’s an American. The movie takes place during WW2. I guess you want that to be set in America? wow.

    • Steve

Annette is a moron.. plain and simple.

  • Ashley

I was going to say that they could’ve just dyed John Slattery’s hair when I clicked on this story, and it looks like the write had the same thought. He is just too cool.

  • Britt

    No one beats John Slattery.

  • Chris Shifty

Slattery did dye his hair for Iron Man 2

  • Pete Mars

Hey Steve, quit being a prick.

  • Brad

Sorry, but it can’t take place in the 1940s. It will have to take place during the height of the cold war where they will have to come up for a suitable origin for the Red Skull.

  • pacino

i gotta agree. the guy don’t look ANYthing like Slattery, who looks like a skinnier version of the howard stark in the photos, in the original Iron Man.
i like consistency, but, hey…they replace terrence howard with DON CHEADLE, who looks NOTHING alike. so, i guess that shows the consistency Marvel’s going for.

  • Ron Mexico

Steve is right, so Pete Mars go fist yourself
