Image Credit: Craig BlankenhornBoth Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia, the weekend’s two new releases, opened to solid numbers but it’s Shrek Forever After that’s likely to win the weekend. Carrie Bradshaw and Co. added an estimated $13 million to its coffers that already boasted $14 million from its Thursday shows. The R-rated comedic romp is now on track for a $50 million 4-day weekend, less than the $57 million earned by the original back in 2008.
Meanwhile, the Jerry Bruckheimer action epic Prince of Persia bowed Friday with approximately $10 million for a 4-day take that could translate into somewhere between $35-$40 million. Still, the movie that’s likely to dominate the weekend once all the numbers are in is Shrek Forever After. The PG-rated animated flick earned an estimated $11 million on Friday, a number that will likely grow to over $55 million for the four-day holiday frame. The rest of the top five will be rounded out by Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood. Robert Downey Jr. and crew took in another $4 million Friday, while Russell Crowe generated close to $3 million for his historic actioner.

FIRST!!
Wow I thought shrek would do poorly even against Sex and the City, because of all the hype with Sex and the City and people were just bashing Shrek 4 for being Shrek 4. Also Persia looks awful.
Sex and the City looks awful (and is), yet is does well.
Prince of Persia has a great trailer and a great talent (Jake).
Personally I would rather see Prince of Persia. Even though it’s a video game adaption of a series I am not that familiar with.
I guess sharing names, doesn’t mean we have to share opinions.
Sex and The City 2 looks like it will be a massive setback to feminists everywhere.
And the TV show, and first film weren’t? I can’t believe some women actually believe that SATC is some sort of empowerment thing. How empowered is a woman who thinks that their self worth is based on A- The man she lands B-the clothes and shoes she wears C- How many gallery openings/book launches/film premieres she attends?
Jake – Not Persian! WTF?
Just saw PofP. I was surprised but I enjoyed it.
Persia WAS awful…
Yay! I will once again have faith in the female audiences for not running out to see another horrid Sex in the City movie! Can you follow suit and do the same for the equally awful next Twilight movie?
Sorry Tommy and Phil, but I think the matter is a bit more complicated than you make it seem. SATC is a post-feminist work all about friendship and the nouveau bohemian lifestyle; the women in it are firmly in control of their own lives. You say that it’s all about the perfect man and the perfect shoe, but post-feminism says that women are actually allowed to like those things in addition to actively pursuing their own self-actualization. What a legendary concept!
Tommy–as a woman and a feminist, I completely agree. The terrible reviews that SATC2 has been getting basically say all the things that, as far as I’m concerned, have been true of the franchise from the beginning. SATC2 basically appropriates feminist rhetoric and uses it to sell mindless consumerism as female empowerment. I don’t see anything empowering about being a materialistic, narcissistic ditz who spends all her time shopping and whining about men.
Natalie-feminism certainly never said that women weren’t allowed to be interested in men and shoes. What it said is that they’re also capable of having other concerns as well. Carrie and the gang, however, seem to have not a thought in their heads that doesn’t involve dating and buying stuff. And in what way is their lifestyle “nouvea bohemian?” Sorry, but so-called “post-feminism” is nothing but feminism transformed into just another marketing tool to make women want things they don’t need.
I love da girls at datingsugarmommies
SECOND!!
THIRD!!
Come on, people.
Yah, I’m a douche. So what?
Hey jerk, i’m dipshat, get a life.
Is that something to be proud of?
wow
First Gary Coleman, now Dennis hopper.. I say lindsay is next…
Nope, it’ll be a Chinese factory worker.
Larry Csonka.
One can only hope.
What an awful comment.
What if someone said that about someone in your family, shame on you.
There’s already been 3. Lena Horne, anyone?
You mean Art Linkletter.
Shrek what?
You say Persia looks awful…maybe we have seen two completely different trailers or something. Or maybe you shouldn’t talk about movies when you haven’t seen them…if you are looking for the best of the 3 that are mentioned in the running for the weekend I am thinking Persia but I am also a 27 year old male. I guess my demographic doesn’t spend money on things like entertainment though.
At least not 27 year old males who live with their parents! Persia looks like a cheaply animated video game movie, oh wait, it’s based on a cheaply animated video game. No way! Haha, dude this movie is for 14 year old boys.
I dont get what you’re trying to say… are you saying that it doesn’t appeal to 27 year old males who live with their parents? I believe that’s patently false.
Anyways, I saw Prince last night and I could say that while it’s entirely forgettable, it is enjoyable.
Yeah, the PoP movie looks like drek. Just because it’s opening opposite more drek doesn’t make any better. If you’re a 27 year old gay man and you want to drool over Jake Gyllenhaal, you could just as easily look at pictures online, no need to sit through a bad movie.
@ mmorgan217 I feel sorry for all the trolls picking on your self conscious analysis. Get a life, losers.
I don’t think anyone that posts on an entertainment message board (including me) should be allowed to tell others to “get a life.” And yes, for the record, that Persia movie looks like complete sh*t.
Reviews for Sex and the City are almost universally poor. Robin Hood is bombing because nobody cares about Robin Hood any more than they care about The Three Musketeers or Zoro.
I think a Robin Hood movie could have worked if it looked engaging and fun, instead of looking (and being) a dull slog. The trailer (and the movie) has no energy or life into it.
Very true!
All we need is a sequel, Sex and Sheep in The Big City, a hybrid crossover with Sheep in The Big City.
They could do a cross-over movie called Shrek in the City, where Shrek goes to New York and has sex with a bunch of over the hill women.
I’m sticking with Sheep in The Big City, imagine that sheep-powered raygun doing damage in New York!
Prince of Persia was okay but utterly forgettable (Alfred Molina was the best part).
The problem with it was that both the trailer and the movie is just ‘stuff’ with characters having to explain everything constantly to justify the next moment of ‘stuff’ happening.
It’s basically Pirates of The Caribbean 2…if it was all Orlando Bloom and had no Johnny Depp whatsoever.
Sex and The City. So…it’s a movie about 3 prostitutes and their mother?
how original.
You know you’re interested. Since you’d like to see what its like for the only kind of women you “date.”
Those 3 “prostitutes” are married and monogamous. Their “mother” is only 8 or 9 years older.
POP is a fun popcorn type of movie and that is the level it should be judged on and by the way it has had a pretty wide demographic. Kids, parents and yes females.
Of course some people won’t care for it but a lot more people will enjoy it. Jake worked extremely hard and went through stuff i bet a lot of folks would cop out of after the first half hour.
Nobody is judging Prince of Persia as anything BUT a popcorn movie.
The point is, it’s an awful popcorn movie.
So Jake went to the gym, so what? He ‘s still that fugly horse-faced guy from bubbleboy. A side order of beef doesn’t change that.
It was a stuntman you saw ‘working extremely hard and going through stuff you bet a lot of folks would cop out after the first half hour’.
Actually, Jake did a large portion of his own stunts
you know fiona — at least get your facts straight when posting. Jake did most of his own stunts and learned a technique called parkor.
Umm..Fiona..you’re certainly entitled to your narrow-minded opinion (Jake G. is “fugly”?), but, please at least know what you’re talking about. Jake did most of his own stunts.
Fugly??? What do u look like? Easy to disparage others on line, huh?
I’ll bet Fiona ia a real prize. Do your family a favor and kill yourself.
Really Fiona? I don’t get the point of your post. Have you seen the movie? It was actually a great summer film, I enjoyed it very much actually. There was a ton of action, it was funny at the right times, and very engaging. It was great. What did you not like about it since your going on about how bad it was… What didn’t you like about that awesome summer popcorn film? Be specific. Not some stupid, Oh it was the crappy effects, story line and plot line wise, i’m assuming you know this since you’re so easily making a case for it being horrible.
“Shrek Forever After” looks like it could hold strong like “How to Train Your Dragon.”
Let’s hope it doesn’t.
Why not? It was a decent final installment to the franchise. Shrek 3 was awful, but Shrek Forever After made up for it and then some. I would love for it to hold strong like Dragon….
Because Kathy, How to Train Your Dragon was ssssssssssooooooooooooo much better than Shrek 4 and I’d like the box office receipts to show that too.
