Box office update: 'Persia' tops 'Sex' on weak Memorial Day weekend

Tags:

Shrek Forever After is still the winner of the weakest Memorial Day in years. But now a drop-off from Sex in the City 2 has propelled the PG-13-rated Prince of Persia into second place for the holiday frame. The Jake Gyllenhaal-starring actioner grossed $37.7 million for the four days while Sex earned $37.1 million for the four days. The R-rated romp starring Sarah Jessica Parker has been unable in its five day opening weekend to outgross the $57 million earned by the original Sex and the City movie, which bowed in 2008.

Shrek Forever After wins with $55 million for the weekend for a total of $145 million while Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood round out the top five with $20.6 million and $13.5 million respectively.

WOW! That is much different than the weekend estimates on Sunday said they were!

    • Moe

HAHAHAHA! Where are the SATC 2 fans. LOOL Let’s see them try to spin this. And DO NOT say that it’s because it opened on a Thursday. That is the studio’s decision because they were afraid it would lose to Price of Persia and LOSE it DID!

      • Michelle

Moe, if you believe that, you’ve been spending too much time with Larry and Curly.

I did not see either movie, I’m sure they’re both awful, but SATC2 had a bigger opening than POP, by about $14M.

Even if you only want to count 4 days, POP is ahead by less than a million (and that slim lead may disappear when the actual numbers are released).

It’s hardly anything to crow about.

        But…whatever blows your skirt up.

      • AD

@Moe-What do you care who’s beating who in the box office? Do you have a dog in this hunt? I wouldn’t think so.

  • Jed

That is a surprise but now we can finally conclude no third sequel to this movie. I heard this version was utter crap!

    • Shane

Not so fast….I am thinking this will be like Oceans.
      11 ROCKED
12 was an embarrassment (As George said, “we aren’t going out that way)
13 was great, ending the trilogy on a high note.

      • JasonHomey

11 was great, 12 was horrible, 13 was better when compared to 12 but still no where near 11. And lets hope no more SATC movies, but POP looked like crap too.

    • Lindsay

Oh, it was. It was painful to watch.

    • Jerry

SATC2 wasn’t as bad as everyone is making it out to be. OK, it’s not going to change movie cinema but if you loved the show, you’ll like the movie.

I wonder if all this good weather is the reason why movies are so low this weekend. This weekend is known for bad weather … and what better thing to do when weather is bad than see a movie.

      • Mike

The reason the grosses are low isn’t good weather, it’s bad movies

      • Faye

The movie was terrible and this is coming from a long time fan who even goes on bluefly and buy certain items from the movie. If you are a fan, you will be dissappointed. If you never seen the show the characters (with the exception of Miranda SURPRISINGLY) come off as shallow self-absorbed and unlikeable … I won’t be one of those spoiler jerks but this was badly written, poorly executed, and a downright waste of 9.75. JMHO

Really since when? how come other movies from Dark night to Star Trek to even Iron man don’t get affected by good weather you do get summer movies are called blockbuster for a reason! they make endless money during the summer. Sorry you point is nonsense. Men in black came out when in Nov? no summer movies are the money makers for hollywood use your sense.

to bored to correct above typos

      • joseph

bs i like the show and hated the movie…it didn’t maintain any essence of the show…everything was so over the top and just plain terrible.

      • Cherish

I went to see SATC2 and it was great. Me and my girls laughed thru out the entire thing, and it was exactly like the show. Hello! They have always been shallow and ridiculously rich with stupid problems, but true fans watched it because of the crazy antics and funny one liners. I loved the movie because I didnt go in with unrealistic expectations. Number two: yes I think the weather had a big impact on the movie going. My friends and I have had our SATC2 movie nite planned for months, but when it was 90 degrees outside without a cloud in the sky we were seriously reconsidering going. Who wants to be in a dark movie theater on Memorial Day weekend when there are beers to drink and cook outs to go to. Fortunately we just went after 10pm so their was a compromise, but definitely think the weather had something to do with it.

      • Fluffy

I disagree. I LOVED the series and was enthralled by the first SATC movie. But I’m sorry, Michael Patrick & Co. SATC2 just blows. BIG-time.

    • Kevin

No third sequel? There hasn’t been a second sequel yet. Do you know what sequel means?

      • m.

Well you can say that the first movie was sequel to the tv show and 2nd movie is the sequel for first movie and 3rd one will be sequel for the 2nd movie and at the same time 3rd movie is 3rd sequel for the TV Show and 2nd sequel for the 1st movie….

    • Brian

This is only the first sequel. SATC3 would be the second sequel.

    • No Sex, No City

Hopefully there won’t be a third SATC. I feel the first one had a great ending for true fans of the show. There was no place but down for any sequel. I’m going to see it this weekend with my girlfriends for the social experience, not because I’m dying to see another SATC movie. hollywood doesn’t know when to call it quits.

  • LOL

This weekend is embarrassing. Not a decent flick in the bunch. Hollywood fails to offer anything worth the time yet again.

    • Sharlin

for real. and it’s suppose to be the start of the summer season.

  • eric

Releasing a film on a Thursday always hinders its weekend box office numbers. in e.x. SATC 2

  • Andrew

I hope “Shrek” will continue to stay strong at the Box Office and come out a good overall total like “How to Train Your Dragon.”

  • ryan

HOw to Train was a much better movie than Shrek, But yeah it was still good. I hope it has the same legs.

  • Sharlin

SATC 2 to be honest, the reviews killed it for me and then watching it, I mean, how can the writing blow so much? It’s been off the air since 2004 only. The 1st movie was way better.

    • SXiPPY

You raise a very good point and that is that the writing sucked and was borderline juvenile, perv-comedy. Where are the behind-the-scenes women who gave input to the series like Antonia Ellis, Jenny Bicks, Jane Raab, Cindy Chupack and Amy Harris? MIcheal Patrick King, I’m sorry but you lack the anatomy and experience only a woman can provide to keep this franchise relatable.

    • SusanS

Negative word of mouth is hurtnig SATC 2 more than the review are (the first one was panned too). Even die hard fans are not liking the movie.

  • Sheli

We saw Prince of Persia today. I enjoyed it for what it was, action fluff. I wasn’t expecting Oscar quality, and I thought it was a nice diversion. I was never a SATC fan. I could never relate, I guess. Just wasn’t for me.

  • filmboymichael

i didn’t like the first 20 minutes of the film, but after that, i felt like it found it’s stride and i giggled and smiled through most of it…and like the first movie, i didn’t want it to end….

    • Shannon

Yeah, that whole wedding scene was WAY too long.

  • Clayton

Glad Prince of Persia topped SAatC2. PoP was so much fun, but SatC was offensive and unnecessary.

  • art

SATC was a huge let down. About half way into it, I thought, they are so SHALLOW. they’re all about the glitz, the money and glamour. There was NOTHING to this but the “glam” clothes…BORRING. And the film they used to shoot it – not flattering for older women – get away from the blue/gray tones!!! WRINKLE CITY

  • Entertainment2u-Twitter

Your box office chart is OFF from what you say here — so fix it!

    BE CONSISTENT, EW!!

  • TONY

there was a group of us out this weekend and we went to the cineplex to see what was playing…. and when we saw our choices, we all decided we’d rather do something; anything else besides see a movie! this was just a bad crop of films. shame on you hollywood!!!

  • Yolanda

I saw Sex today and thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked it way better than the first. I can think of a couple of films in recent memory that were bad. The Ugly Truth comes to mind!

  • Holly

Didn’t hate S&TC 2, but love, love, loved Prince of Persia. I hope it builds an audience the way the first Pirates movie did. It’s good fun. My only advice to Mr. Bruckenheimer: a little more romance next time, please? Don’t waste the Gyllenhall!!

    • marc

Hated Prince of Persia, and Gyllenhall is no action hero. My girlfriend thinks he’s butt- ugly.

    • Steve

It was far better than I expected; I didn’t think Jake would pull off being an action hero, but imo he did a great job.

      • Melanie

I love persia and shrek better at datingsugarmommies
