'The Twilight Saga': We talk to screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies, Twilight

Melissa Rosenberg has been Stephenie Meyer’s big-screen translator since the first Twilight movie debuted back in 2008. With a new director coming on to each film, Rosenberg’s constant presence has helped ensure Meyer’s story stays constant throughout the saga. Also, in Eclipse, since director David Slade isn’t a writer, all the words spoken by your favorite characters came straight from Rosenberg’s computer. We checked in with the screenwriter, who recently left her day job as showrunner of Showtime’s hit series Dexter to direct her attention completely to the Twilight series. The California native took a break from pre-production on Breaking Dawn to chat with us.

Is Josh Hutcherson the next Spidey?

The rumor that Josh Hutcherson is going to be your next friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has been stirring the Internet into a frenzy. But is the rumor true? Sony Pictures isn’t commenting, but sources seem to indicate that Hutcherson, 17, is the guy for the job. He’s screen-tested for the role, along with a plethora of young up-and-comers, including Jamie Bell and Aaron Johnson. But his name is the one that keeps on coming around.

Hutcherson has been acting for the past decade and is getting noticed for his role opposite Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in the indie film The Kids Are All Right, which opens June 9. He’s also one of the stars in Red Dawn, whenever that film finds its way to the big screen. The Kentucky native is next lined up to reprise his role as Sean Anderson in New Line’s Journey to the Center of the Earth II, though it isn’t clear yet if there is a deal for that movie. Should it go through, Journey, now being directed by Brad Peyton, should begin filming in October. The studio is anticipating a quick shoot, meaning Hutcherson could be ready to go as Spider-Man by the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011, which is exactly when Sony and director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) are planning to begin filming the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.

We’ll probably know little more about this until Sony makes it official, but stay tuned.

'Ramona and Beezus' director Elizabeth Allen lands new gig: 'Is He the One?'

Categories: Deals, Movie Biz, Movies

Ramona and Beezus helmer Elizabeth Allen is staying within the Fox family, joining Fox 2000 for their romantic comedy Is He the One?, about a woman walking down the aisle on her wedding day. Allen, a trained television editor, previously made Aquamarine — her first movie for 20th Century Fox  — back in 2006, and subsequently shepherded the long-awaited film adaptation of Beverly Cleary’s classic children’s book Ramona and Beezus, which is set to bow next month.

Allen will develop the script for Is He the One? with original scribe Michelle Morgan. Katherine Heigl was previously in talks to star in the romantic comedy, but those discussions fell apart earlier this year during contract negotiations. The movie, which flashes back to the heroine’s three greatest loves before we learn whose waiting for her at the alter, currently doesn’t have its leading lady. Todd Garner and Broken Road Productions will produce. John Glickman and Cassidy Lang at Spyglass are also producing.

'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' breaks box office records with midnight grosses

Categories: Box Office, Movies

Twilight fever is showing no sign of abatement with the film’s third installment. In fact, fans of the series seem even more juiced up than usual. The film grossed in excess of $30 million from its midnight shows Tuesday in over 4,000 theaters across North America. This estimate surpasses the previous midnight record holder, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which earned $26.3 million last November, and now holds the new industry record as largest midnight gross ever. The film — starring Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner — has received the largest North American release ever, bowing in 4,408 theaters on Wednesday. Twenty-nine additional theaters will be added by Friday for a total of 4,437.

Eclipse marks the first Twilight film to receive a summer opening, a decision that seems to be playing out incredibly well for Summit Entertainment. Stay tuned over the weekend as we report the complete results.

Apparition restructures; Tom Ortenberg in as consultant

Following the abrupt departure of creative chief Bob Berney back in May, Apparition honcho Bill Pohlad has finally announced his company’s restructuring. The new Apparition will lose 60 percent of its staff and relocate its offices entirely to Los Angeles. Veteran indie executive Tom Ortenberg has been brought in as a consultant to the company and will shepherd through its upcoming release, Terrence Malick’s mystical epic The Tree of Life. No release date has yet been set for the Brad Pitt-Sean Penn-starrer, but sources believe it will be released as a year-end Oscar contender.

The film, which Malick (The Thin Red Line) has been working on since 2008, centers on a family who must come to terms with a devastating loss. Tree of Life, a River Road production, is produced by Pohlad and Pitt’s Plan B production company.

Marvel confirms Tommy Lee Jones will play Colonel Phillips in 'Captain America'

Once again Marvel has chosen to confirm casting months after strong speculation. But yes, it’s true Tommy Lee Jones will play Colonel Phillips in Captain America: First Avenger. Who knows? The studio is so late on the news, the guy may have already filmed his scenes. Regardless, when you see the movie next summer, count on Jones playing the important role of the man who recruits Steve Rogers to join Project Rebirth, the experimental project that leads to the creation of the Super Soldier. Marvel says the character will be updated for the film, which bows on July 22, 2011.

Jones can next be seen in the Sundance hit The Company Men opposite Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper. The Weinstein Co. is scheduled to release the film in New York and Los Angeles on October 22nd.

Adam Sandler: After 15 years, he keeps serving his fans, which is why they serve him

Categories: Adam Sandler

grown-upsImage Credit: Tracy BennettAdam Sandler has always enjoyed a special relationship with his fans, because he presents himself as a barely glorified version of them. He mirrors their silliness, their corny-horny obsessiveness,  their wholesome arrested development, and — now — their lunge toward middle age. More often than not, they return the favor by turning out for his movies. At 43, Sandler still has a kind of pact with his audience, an I’ll-always-be-me slapstick nobility. After years of hit comedies, he still looks the same — same bullet-headed buzzcut, same boyishly gawky grin, same soft-bodied pudge that says, “Hey, I may be a big movie star, but I do likes to eat!” And when he isn’t taking one of his periodic detours into being a serious actor (something he can be quite brilliant at), he still makes goofy, madcap-obvious, and at times very funny movies. His $40 million opening weekends are, by now, a summer tradition; considering that he became a major movie star 15 years ago, his track record, despite a few bumps in the road, is astonishingly sustained. What’s shrewd, intriguing, and admirable about Sandler’s career is that the comedies he shepherds and stars in often appear to be animated by an unchanging naughty-boy spirit, but in their irresponsible and slightly plastic way, they’ve gradually grown up. They’ve mirrored the lives of Sandler’s fans. READ FULL STORY »

'Toy Story' wins at the box office, while 'Grown Ups' scores and 'Knight & Day' lags behind

Categories: Box Office, Movies

knight-and-day-beachImage Credit: Frank MasiToy Story 3 has dominated the box office for a second straight weekend, but Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups did some serious business, too. Knight & Day, meanwhile, did little to restore Tom Cruise as a summer box office draw. And the three films combined didn’t do enough to combat last year at this time, when Transformers 2 bowed to $109 million. READ FULL STORY »
