Should there be a 'Sex and the City 3' movie?

I was a little late catching up to Sex and the City 2 (late for a critic, that is — we tend to see things Read the full post.

I am by far a SAC fan, but saw the first film and liked it. But I do want to say this. I hate how just because a movie is not GREAT and OSCAR worthy that it is just plain terrible and awful. Can’t a movie just be decent or good or just OK?

  • LC

I think it was a great movie and very very funny!!! I don’t get critics! I totally think they should make a sex in the city 3.

  • loubeoh

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I am not going to mock you for it. In my opinion, however, SATC 2 was terrible. I would rather remember these characters as they were in the HBO show and not as the offensive, un-funny caricatures they were in this movie. I don’t want to risk the chance of further sabotage and ruination. Please, no more movies

I’d have to agree. It wasn’t a great movie and it wasn’t all terrible, however, it has to do more with the other characters. They made the men accessories and really changed the core of how everyone related to each other. The scene with Miranda and Charlotte was the best scene in the movie. They should have done more with them and Steve, Harry, Stanford, and Anthony. It seems like they did more with everyone on the series in 30 minutes than they did with them in 2.5 hours.

i haven’t seen it yet, but even in the commercials for it the characters seemed like over blown parodies of their former selves – i never thought i’d resist seeing this movie but i have and don’t see the value of a 3rd

      • JayNYC

They’ve *always* been parodies of themselves. Move along, nothing new to see here.

According to box office mojo, the film
has made 80 million dollars in 6 days, & only cost 100 million to make. So the film will make a profit before it leaves the theatres & DVD sales will
just be gravy. So this “mediocre” box office stuff is garbage.
As a 30 year old fan of the show I say YES to a third film. It resonated with me, & dealt with real issues.

I have to disagree that the next logical storyline is “Carrie has a baby.” One of the few things that was kept true-to-character in the movie was that Big & Carrie don’t want kids.

    • pitt

      Agree!

      • Jen

me too, and aren’t Carrie and Big too old to have children?

      • Snsetblaze

Big certainly isn’t – guys never are. Carrie – isn’t she in her early 40s now? In theory, not the best time – in reality – she probably still can – if she wants to.

  • meg

    YES to SATC 3.

While I was disappointed in the 2nd, I would love for them to come back and finish with at least a strong, 3rd movie. I would hate for this to be the note we leave these fabulous ladies on. Just make sure they stay in the city this time.

I didn’t hate the 2nd movie, but I did go in with low expectations. The part I had the hardest time with. Samantha was a times offensive and at times pathetic. I appreciate that she wants to live her love life as she pleases, but she could have shown a little respect, especially in Abu Dhabi.

    • Jennifer

Yeah, I felt like the Smanatha from the tv show would have NEVER acted that way! Ditto on the scene with the hormone cream in her office and the underwear around her ankles – Samantha was always brazen and uber-sexual, but she was never that stupid nor that crass!

      • pitt

        I third this!

      • Donna

Don’t you remember her giving the World Wide delivery guy a “job” in her office? What about the time she did the same for Richard? I actually thought that scene from SATC2 was totally believable for Samantha.

  • pitt

Overall I didn’t like SATC2 as much as the first film, though I did like seeing Miranda shift to a more family- and balance-friendly job and the fact that the relationship between Big and Carrie seemed real for perhaps the first time. I would likely watch a third movie due to a mixture of curiosity and loyalty, but the stories feel pretty wrapped up to me with nowhere to go. Don’t want to see divorces, Samantha getting married (out of character) and definitely no kids for Carrie and Big (also out of character for both of them), so can’t imagine a third film direction that I would like…

  • BrandonK

People were definitely too hard on it. I enjoyed it at least as much as the first one, although neither compares to the finest episodes of the TV show.

  • Amy

If there is a SATC-3-leave them in NYC!

That’s what everyone loved about the first movie and the show-THE CITY!

  • Rebecca

Thank you! I’m glad someone with an entertainment voice is finally saying this. I saw it this weekend and thought that it was fun and funny and a nice escape for a couple of hours. Everything I expect from a summer movie. Why is SATC2 supposedly gawdy and awful, but The Hangover and all it’s antics in Vegas acceptable for an award? However, no third movie. I think this film wrapped up all their stories quite nicely. I am, though, interested in the pre-quel idea with a film of The Carrie Diaries.

  • Michael

I think if/when they do a third, they need to tie up several things… first of all, Carrie and Big should have babies, or at least discuss why they don’t. Second, the men (Steve, Harry, Big, Smith) should have more substantial roles than simply being the ladies’ arm candy; they are human beings after all. Third, let’s face it, Samantha can remain single forever if she wants, but she CANNOT act the same way she did throughout the series anymore. I’m sorry, but she’s 53, and I don’t think it’s ageist to tell her to start acting more her age. You just can’t go on being a tramp forever, remain single sure, but trampy, no. I would recommend resolving things with Smith and getting back together with him, (NOT that she has to… YES, a woman can remain single and there is nothing wrong with her, I’m just saying that’s what I would recommend for her future happiness, again, not that she couldn’t be happy or fulfilled otherwise). Miranda is the only character left who I find altogether lovable. Keep her on this happy-go-lucky streak, but don’t lose her oft-snarky wit in the process. Overall, a third would be good to wrap everyone up, and at least redeem the FAR too long Abu Dhabi sequence. Definitely have them stay, at least for 85% or more of the film, in NYC. After all the “City” is built into the title.

    • Rebecca

Big and Carrie discussed off and on why they dont want kids for the past decade. It’s just not them. However, I do agree with a bigger role for the 3 husbands. I’ve always wanted to see a good scene between three (or 4 with Smith) of them. What DO they talk about….?

    • Kelsey

Why Big and Carrie don’t want kids (and why do they HAVE to have them?) has already been discussed. It’s not happening, and there’s nothing wrong with it.
I do agree that the men — Big, Steve and Harry and I suppose Smith — should be given more to do, and not just in ways that directly relate back to the women. All three of them are pretty interesting.

I wont thrash you for liking this movie. I will thrash you for liking this movie and Transformers 2 while giving tepid reviews to Scorsese films like Goodfellas. And yes, you DO like the attention, which is why you resent Peter Travers, who did like Goodfellas and hated Transformers.

  • KevinB

It is what it was. I did not watch the series or the first movie for its artistic achievements. I went for the comedy and campiness of it. The outfits and the situations for the most part are ludicrous and that is what I enjoy. Yes there should be a third.

  • john

Bless you! I felt I was alone in thinking SATC 2 was much better than the first movie. I, too, delighted in that the ladies felt like the characters I knew and loved in the tv series (unlike the first movie).

With that said, I think audiences have spoken – there won’t be a SAT3.

Meanwhile, I keep hoping for an X-files 3 which seems unlikely to materialize …
