Should there be a 'Sex and the City 3' movie?

I was a little late catching up to Sex and the City 2 (late for a critic, that is — we tend to see things Read the full post.

I found it highly enjoyable. This film has a sophistication and layer in it about gender roles that I don’t think many of the mostly straight, male critics understood (There is a reason why King chose to have the ladies sing “I Am Woman.” Look beyond the glitz of the scene and at the actual theme of the song.). Majority saw the film as the girls being spoiled and going on an unrealistic and unnecessary trip to the Middle East. Yet they failed to see the commentary that Michael Patrick King was making with the exploration of these modern New York City women in a world where a woman’s sexuality is frowned upon.

      This.

    Thank you Owen!

I am with you. I am also NOT tired of these ladies. I do want a third film. I also appreciated the quieter scenes in the film.

If I were able to speak to Michael Patrick King, I would advise this:

    1) Talk to some of the female writers he used to work with on the series…or flat out write the next script wth one or two of them. I understand that he feels these ladies “live in his head” but I think he needs a female writing voice involved here.

    2) The next movie should take place entirely in New York City. No vacations. No other locations. In both movies, I have felt the city of New York as a character has gotten completely lost.

I also enjoyed ‘Sex and the City 2′ for what it was. It was over the top from the first frames. I decided to ‘go with it’ and enjoyed it! By the time the four ladies were marching towards camera in the middle of the desert, Aaron Zigman’s lush score blaring, I knew we were in ‘alternate universe’ “Sex and the City” and I couldn’t help but laugh. It is so clear that shot was intended to be ridiculous!

The only scene I truly questioned in SATC2 is when MPK clearly went for a joke that was so over the top it was not only offensive but completely betrayed the character of Samantha Jones.

I refer of course to the scene of Samantha’s anger and wild gyrations in front of a male Muslim mob. The character may be a sexual dynamo with clownish elements, but she was also classy and smart.

I can see why Muslims would find that sequence a total affront to their sensibilities….and I don’t believe for one second that Samantha Jones, Public Relations, would behave that way.

Again, I see where MPK thought it would be hilarious.

Wow, your suggestions are spot on – I completely agree with you!

Your suggestion about bringing back some of the female writers is absolutely true – I found both movies really lacking those great scenes where the 4 of them debate and argue over some relationship (or other) issue and you get these different perspectives on the issue. The one lone scene that addressed this was the scene between Miranda and Charlotte about motherhood in SATC3 – many more of those types of scenes should have been written in. It should no longer be MPK strictly running every aspect of these movies … bring back the other SATC writers for God’s sakes!!!

      • Sara I

Also – your remarks about the betrayal of Samantha’s character were very very true. The scene with her underpants down, to the scene with the condoms, to the scene with the 4th of July fireworks = beyond tacky and crass, not to mention over-the-top vulgar. I don’t know why Kim Cattrall herself didn’t put her foot down at these scenes. Yes, Samantha has always been sexual and fiercely independent, but never at the expense of tact, class and dignity. Those scenes were truly revolting. It really made me wonder if MPK (and SJP!) had a nasty, hidden agenda to purposely make Kim’s character into a hideous caricature. UGH. KIM – don’t you dare sign up for the 3rd movie until you demand a proper, respectful written role!!!

It is true, the 4 of them discussing different issues was a core of the show.

      • monique

But I don`t agree on Sam. She was very often vulgar in the show and that is OK, because at other times she was very classy and played the breast cancer parts with great dignity. But you remember when she promises class when representing Lucy Liu, than losing her job for shouting f, f, f, on the phone. She had both sides. Decent characters are rarely funny, surely not enough funny for a comedy. I felt this movie was showtime for Sam, and I was so happy she could go just so crazy. After all, she deserved some real fun after all her cancer story.

@Paul Katz – great suggestions. However I would not go so far as to say MPK “betrayed” the character of Samantha Jones – she’s going through menopause, it’s hot in the desert, she had just been arrested and thrown out of the country, and they were in a hurry to get to the airport. Under the stress of all that, it makes total sense that she would lose her cool and have a rant. Even classy people lose their temper sometimes if they are pushed to the limit.

I liked it…I thought it was fun.

I enjoyed this movie well enough. It wasn’t great art, but it was an enjoyable movie about women and relationships. I actually liked this movie much better than the first one, because the first one’s main plot points felt very contrived to me.

  • Elizabeth

please do not make another one…

  • Eric

Good piece. I thought the film was great. A lot of fun with less serious moments and depressing drama that the first film had. I thought this film had more of the light hearted fun, like the series. I hope they make a third one.

  • conor O’Brien

I looked on Rotten Tomatoes and it had 11% out of 100 when I went to see it, so I had low expectations for it, but I thought it DIDN’T suck either, not too bad, but I did feel it was time to lay it to rest (like seaon 6 of AbFab, love you but you gotta stop) the only reason I would like to see a S&TC 3 would be (1st I like trilogies) and just to redeem itself and go out with a better bang than movie 2, if this is the end, then it went out on a little note and a little sour in most fans mouths

  • cince

God, no. they should have left it in Paris/NYC in 2004. what about SJP’s talk about leaving the party while it’s cresting? Now it’s just embarrassing, and i was a superfan of the show. i thought the 1st film was a sellout and the 2nd is so dreadful i can’t bear to see the cartoonish versions of the TV originals. They just undid all the wit and creativity of the whole series with these poor imitations. Why? The almighty dollar.

    • Sara I

Agreed! I think MPK and SJP are hell-bent on recreating SATC as a “brand” and nothing more. This is why the characters have become such caricatures of excess and consumption, with very little of the depth and intelligence they so winningly showed in the TV series.

Actually I am so happy to read this post – I liked SATC 2 and while I can understand the critical drubbing, I cannot understand the intense HATRED for the second film – it’s as good or better as all the other crap films that come out in the summer!!

I enjoyed catching up with Carrie and Miranda and Charlotte and Samantha and if there’s a third movie, I’ll be there for that one too. (Just, PLEASE don’t make it Carrie having a baby – that would be SO out of character for her!).

I agree with other comments here that New York is the fifth character in SATC (it’s even in the title) – if there is a threequel, they need to stay in NYC!

  • Tim

Definite a third. While it was not as good as #1, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the problems, as you pointed out, had a deeper context than the arguments: there is a process to the writing.

  • BA

I have always been a huge fan since Season 1 when I was a junior in college. And I say STOP. Please, for the love of God, stop! The movie was ok. I would have given it a B (I loved the NYC scenes!), if not for that ridiculous scene in the end when the Muslim women “saved” them, in which case my grade ended up as C to C-, depending on my mood when I am asked. But really, can’t we just live in a world where they are as we last saw them? Happy? Older? Wiser? I really don’t care to see Carrie grapple with kids. It would just feel so forced at this point. Let them bow out with as much grace as they can muster at this point.

  • melissa

i was glad to spend time with these wonderful characters, even if the movie wasn’t great. i’d gladly see a third movie, if only to visit some old friends another time…

  • CeCe

I really enjoyed SAT2. I thought it was a shift from the 1st movie which tied up a number of loose ends, and what ifs from the series. The 2nd movie was an escapism movie. It was just pure fun, and thats what I enjoyed about it. The focus was on friendship and real life issue. I have watched this series grow into a phenomenon and I am personally glad these woman are not exactly the same as they were when the series debuted. I would go for a SATC3. The movies don’t need to be oscar worthy, they just need to be fun!!

  • Sara I

I think MPK and SJP are hell-bent on recreating SATC as a “brand” and raking in the $$$, and nothing more. I could see this with all the tie-ins to contests and giveaways weeks before the premiere. I would not be surprised if SATC Barbie dolls are being manufactured as we speak. This is why the characters have become such caricatures of self-absorption (I’m speaking to you, SJP) excess and consumption, with very little of the depth and intelligence they so winningly showed in the TV series.

  • Diane Andruzzi

Mixed feelings. The “gay wedding” with Liza was hilarious. The constant “hot flash” references make me think that #3 would have to be titled “Sex in the Nursing Home”!Mr.Big is still HOT.

    • QJ

SATC 3: The Golden (Girl) years

    • Bobby

I had that idea last week.Followed up by Sex in the Funeral Home.
