Finally, a little good news at the box office. The little indie-that-could City Island has now grossed $5 million after twelve weekends in theatrical release. The Andy Garcia-Julianna Margulies family drama seems to have struck a nerve with audiences around the country despite its limited run. At its widest release, the PG-13-rated film from Raymond De Felitta (The Thing About My Folks) was in 269 theaters. This weekend it will be in 175 U.S. locations.
And City Island isn’t the only movie withstanding these tough market conditions. The Swedish adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has grossed over $7 million in 11 weeks while the documentary on British street artist Banksy, Exit Through the Gift Shop, has done over $2 million in seven weekends. Both Solitary Man, starring Michael Douglas, and the Indian import Kites started off strong, but have since fallen off in the last weekend. If none of the new releases are inspiring you to go to the movies, maybe one of these indies will.

I get sad during summer due to not a lot of good movies to go to. I will try to see these films that are meaningful and thought provoking. Thanks.
Glad that City Island is doing well. It was a nice little film, and Emily Mortimer was wonderful
City Island was pretty funny. Not a bad way to spend an hour and a half.
this was such a good movie!!! and such great perfomances, by garcia, marguliese, everyone was great. hopefully someone sees this little gem and then there will be awards galore!!!
Where is Doc Jensen?
It’s probably less than good news when you realize the budget for the film is $6 million. Hopefully it will continue to make money though.
I’m really rooting for a new indie film coming out in January 2011 about a guy who sues the devil for $8 trillion (anyone know the title?). I think this is the film to watch out for!
Had to look long amd hard to find a theater still plying City Island but it was well worth the drive. Sweet little story about a family of msany secrets. Performsnces by Andy Garcia and supporting cast sre outstanding. Truly enjoyed this quiet, realistic movie about love and fsmily.
best line was, “they busted you from school for smokin a little pot? ahh come her honey!” good movie!
