Image Credit: Jasin BolandWho knew the summer would be saved by The Karate Kid? That may happen now that the Jaden Smith-starring remake has earned an estimated $19 million Friday and is now on target for a weekend gross that could reach $60 million. It’s surprising in that everyone expected The A-Team to win Friday night but Karate Kid to take the weekend. Instead the PG-13 rated A-Team may not cross $10 million for Friday night, putting its weekend gross at $27 million. That means The Karate Kid, with its $40 million budget and 2 hour and 20 minute run time, just crushed the $100 million-budgeted The A-Team. Yikes.
The rest of the top five is made up of holdovers, with Shrek Forever After grossing an estimated $4.5 million for a weekend that could reach $15 million. The R-rated Judd Apatow-produced comedy Get Him to the Greek earned another $3.3 million on Friday, a number likely to translate to $10 million for the three days. And the action comedy Killers with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher is likely to round out the five with a $2.8 million Friday that should become $8 million by the end of the frame.
This weekend is now on track to beat last year at this time when The Hangover, then in its second weekend of release, earned $32 million, and Pixar’s Up grossed $30 million in its third weekend of release. The Karate Kid victory will bode well for the struggling box office, especially as Toy Story 3 comes racing into theaters next weekend. Perhaps all the hand-wringing will prove to be overblown.

Plan on seeing the Karate Kid and A-Team this weekend. They both sound entertaining.Still amazed Kickass didn’t do better. It was fantastic!
Karate Kid is sickening.
I was really hoping KK would flop.
Now that kid is going to grow being a bigger arrogant @$$hole than I originally thought. Thanks for shoving this kid down our throats, Will and Jada! Somewhere there are hundreds of struggling actors weeping.
Wow, sounds like someone is extremely bitter for no good reason.
He’s already there, bro. Did you see Jaden Smith’s Letterman appearance a few days ago? Dave was looking at him like he was an alien with his pompous arrogance.
I thought it was dumb too. Also, this kid is being groomed for the next generation of arrogant young actors
I love how people get upset because an actor made it. I’m happy for him. I don’t plan on ever seeing that movie, but good for him.
This kid didn’t make it. It was handed to him because of his parents.
KC, do you hate everything? Just curious.
There are lots of famous actors just because of their parents. Why pick on this kid? I mean look at Angelina Jolie, Colin Hanks, Ben Stiller, Emma Roberts, and Kate Hudson.
I used to complain about Will Smith getting his kid all these roles but the fact is- I would do the same thing for my son, and I’m sure so would all of you.
In terms of child actors, the kid isn’t bad – I thought he was good in Pursuit of Happyness. I can’t stand Jackie Chan, though. I’d rather eat glass than see him try and play dramatic.
KC, I must say you sound very jealous of Jaden. If you’re trying to be an actor or know someone who is, just try harder. Don’t hate on a kid who have connections, lol. Jealousy won’t get you far in life maybe that’s why you can’t and want prosper in life.
LOL the only thing I would be jealous of with this kid is his bank account.
How can any of you be so blind about this brat’s arrogance?
@Heather2
no, I don’t hate everything. I just can’t stand the mediocrity that Hollywood seems to churn out these days and how everyone accepts it because that’s all they are given.
I figured that KK might do better as it’s more geared for kids, but I’ll go see AT myself as I was a fan of the series as a little kid and I’m not sold on JS, as I didn’t care for his performance in the Day the Earth stood still remake. He doesn’t seem to have the likability of his parents imo.
LOL people, if they find Jaden Smith pompous and completely over-the-top arrogant given his accomplishments or lack thereof (and how he actually GOT all these jobs), are jealous? The reason, in answer to Michael’s question above, that people pick on J. Smith and not, say, Colin Hanks, is because Hanks actually seems like a regular person and not a complete D-bag.
I’m with Hutchy on this. I don’t like to hate on kids, but I could not put up with watching him on Letterman the other night. There’s a difference between being confident and being pompous, and that kid was way over the line.
Please.. This young boy is talented, and he is not being shoved down my throat. I am glad to finally see a young african american film star. Because we have so few.. He is gifted, and I personally can not wait to see and hear more from this young, smart, and funny child of two brillant and talented parents. GET Over it already, Jaden Smith has arrived. So stop complaining and DEAL!!!
If it was so sickening, you wouldn’t go and see it right? It was a brilliant movie, get over it! YOU HATER! Jealous over a 12 yearold black boy, now that’s sickening and he’s laughing all the way to the bank, IDIOT!
WOW!!! I am really shocked. $19 million on Friday for The Karate Kid?? Well done Chackie Chan. Poor “A-Team”, I heard it was really good also. That’s what you get for turning a TV show, which BARELY anyone has heard of, and turn it into a movie.
What’s next an ALF movie?
The A Team Movie was great and I am a life long A Team Junkie. Very Well Done. The first time I have left a theater since Avatar and have not been disappointed. This is no Avatar but definitely worth going to see.
Barely heard of? A-Team was one of the biggest shows in the mid 80′s and reaird through the early 90′s. I’m only 25 right now, but I clearly remember this show being one of my favorites when I was little. So yeah, you don’t know what you are talking about. As for a next movie, I’d like to see AirWolf!
Joe, isn’t it obvious? Moe isn’t a child of the 80s.
What do you mean “Barely heard of”
???? Yeah I know kids today don’t know about older TV shows as much as kids in the 80s and 90s did, back when they used to air stuff from the 50s, 60s and 70s on syndicated reruns all the time. Today there are no reruns and you have to look up the TV Land channel, but The A-Team was one of the biggest hits of the 80s, it helped save NBC along with The Cosby Show.
KickAss was INCREDIBLE.
It was indeed. Hit Girl effing rules!
Americans will go see any crap thrown up on the screen.
Shut up with the damn Americans. We specialize in entertainment, deal with it.
Well deserved, this movie was pretty darn good.
I went to see a matinee showing of the A- Team yesterday. The Karate Kid played at the same time and was completely sold out, and my theatre was mostly empty!! But A-Team was a surprisingly good movie!! I enjoyed it a lot.
Yeah, when I went to see a matinee yesterday, my theatre was far from sold out as well. I don’t know if it was over-exposure in ads or a Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score somewhere around 50%, but this movie’s not taking off like I thought it would. It’s not a bad movie, though I wouldn’t necessarily call it good either. I was entertained by it and not embarassed to have watched it or been seen watching it, unlike *cough* Armageddon*cough*Transformers*cough*G.I. Joe*cough*Charlie’s Angels*cough*Smoking Aces*cough* Anyway, you get my point.
Clash of the titans cough Alice in Wonder cough and its Transformers 2 not 1. 1 was pretty good. 2 was the worst movie ever made.
2 80′s remakes on the same weekend, both of which I grew up with as a kid. But which one can I take my kids too? A-Team’s language is too salty for my kids, so Karate Kid it is. Would be curious if this is the case for many in my situation…
Save your money. Your kids will thank you one day.
Mr. T was right – the original A-Team was kid-safe and fun. The movie got all dark and edgy and ruined it.
Karate Kid , u mean Kung Fu Kid, Im planning to see A Team, I just dont wanna see any kid movie this weekend
Granted, it’s not always the case, but generally, the family-friendly flicks win out in the box office, so it’s not that surprising. I loved THE A-TEAM as a kid and knew the movie was going to be junk–though I hoped it’d be entertaining junk at least–even as I put my money down for it. There’s a lot of adults I know who grew up with it but now think they’re too and mature to go see it now, so that might be playing into it. They should get over themselves, though. It’s not as embarassing as walking into a porn theatre in just a raincoat, fedora, and sunglasses by any means.
The producer of the A team show Stephen Cannel produced the movie and it shows lots of nods to the tv show. Worth the $.
Karate Kid vs. A-Team at the movies.
Meanwhile, offerings like the True Blood premiere and Breaking Bad finale on t.v.
So is this the weekend when Hollywood movies officially throw in the towel as utterly, 100% creatively bankrupt and just capitulate to cable television once and for all?
Wow, I guess Jaden really be Will Smith’s heir. I thought he was really cute in Pursuit of Happyness. But why is Jackie Chan barely promoted in the previews?
I’m guessing that Jaden’s star billing has a little to do with the fact that Will is the producer
EXACTLY! Funny how everyone seems to be trying to keep that quiet… I guess they don’t want people to realize how bad of an actor that kid is until after they have plunked down their ticket money…
One of these films is an 80s remake of a widely-accepted, nostalgically loved movie (first that arguably led to too many sequels). The other is an 80s remake of a widely-accepted-by-guys, nostalgically mocked TV show that drudged on 5 (too-many) seasons. I haven’t seen either film yet, but I plan to see KARATE KID sometime this week. A-TEAM will likely be a Redbox rental.
Jaws and Rocky might want a word with you on that too many sequels thing.
Hopefully this may get movie producers to start stepping on the brakes regarding all of these lame 80s remakes…
Why would it?
The Karate Kid is an 80s remake and is going to make a lot of money, so why would producers stop being lazy?
Saw the A-team and it was great…lots of explosions, lots of laughs, lots of fun…don’t know what movie the critics saw.
Thanks America. Now this kid is going to be in every movie, his own tv show, and of course releasing a cd.
you people are some real haters, You must really hate seeing people (kids) being successful because i don’t any adult that would be hating on a kid. Jaden is a really good actor he is not like one of those child actors who cannot act. So the kid earn his $ give him a break. Its not his fault he is making more money than you at his age.
“Jaden is a really good actor he is not like one of those child actors who cannot act.”
Um…that is actually what he is.
Actually, I don’t hate HIM (though he is incredibly annoying). I hate his parents! There can be no doubt that this kid (and his sister who was in Kit Kitteredge and was HORRIBLE) is being shoved down our throats. But beyond this…I’m just irritated that they remade The Karate Kid in the first place. It was a perfect little movie.
Doesn’t mean you have to watch, buy or listen to anything he is in.
This
I cannot believe that Karate Kid is good. I would rather sleep on thumb tacs then ruin the love I have for the original. Especially if it involves the spawn of Will and jada.
Its not his fault he is making more money than you at his age. And yes he a great actor just like his rich daddy and mommy. But he earned his $ so give the kid a break
I just saw this movie and for a 12 year old, Jaden is a very good actor and he worked hard for this role…so the Kid’s parents are Will Smith and Jada pinkett so what???? Will Smith worked hard to get where he is and i think its a good thing he is setting up his own kids for success!! stop hating!
Cry me a river and do something useful with your life rather than bashing someone who is successful. Just hurts you to see someone do better than you, doesn’t it?
wow i hated karate kid before it opened. I want to smack that kid in the head Go A-Team. Better yet, go rent The Hangover and stay home.
WOW that is really good but I thought they will get more money than that because almost everybody in my school was saying that they wanted to see the movie but I love it any way $19 millions in one day that is amazing go Jaden Smith you are a true smith
I know right that kid can act just like his parents.
@Cee
How about you go finish your homework and stop sucking this little spoiled rich kid’s dick?
He sucks his parents paid for the film that is why he is the lead not because he earned it
@Denise
Everyone at school? Figures…
How offensive to say something like that about a little kid! You are such hater.
Wow, you are mature. “Go finish your homework”? Perhaps if you weren’t some bitter middle-age man still hanging on to a career he hates, you wouldn’t be critical of young successful people and those that praise them. And perhaps, you might know that school is out for most children right now…
&Becca
Brutal honesty I didn’t mean it literally it was a more vulgar form of saying stop kissing ass I’m sure there are many kids/teenagers/ and adults in the world who can act 10000% better but they will never get a chance becuase they can’t buy their way in
@Niecey
Nowhere near middle age it’s nice that you think I am, I’m not hating giving my honest opinion this kid got a hand out thanks to nepotism if you don’t believe me look at who the producers are the last part of your comment made you look stupid did you not read that Denise said “Everyone at school”?
I was going to see the A-Team until the parachuting tank trailer. Where’s the suspense if the team gets saved by ridiculous special effects. Groan. Karate Kid pulls you in as you watch Jayden get painfully beat down and battle back. Karate Kid also has 1980’s training sequences. Gonna fly now..
Go see it. The movie is worth going to. The tank scene is a little over the top but in the moment its halfway believable. The rest of the movie was really well done. Thoroughly enjoyable.
