'Karate Kid' sequel: 'We've been talking about it for weeks.'

Tags: ,

When your $40 million movie bows to $56 million, of course you’re going to start thinking about how to make a sequel. And Sony Pictures is indeed putting things into place. The studio confirmed yesterday that plans to reunite Jaden Smith with his star-making role as Dre Parker have been in the works for weeks. No writers have yet been hired, but the studio’s production president Doug Belgrad said, “We’ve been talking about it for weeks already. We didn’t want to jinx anything but we knew we had a playable movie and we were pretty excited about it. So we’re already kicking ideas around.”

Director Harald Zwart added, “I would absolutely love to do a sequel. I think working with those guys was the best part of my career. So yeah, if they want me, I would love to do it again.”

No word on ideas yet for the sequel, or even if the Smith clan would return to China for number two. But it’s clear we have not seen the last of Dre Parker. —Reporting by Chris Nashawaty

If only there was a script for “Karate Kid II” that they could use…

    • Jay

Yeah, take it to Okinawa Japan, and have the kid learn a new punching technique based on a tiny little drum while saving his new Japanese girlfriend… oh, wait

…The Karate Kid Goes To Japan…

…sad thing is the title actually makes sense…
        ^0o^

If only these movies would go straight to video right where they belong…

    • Barry

No, if only they were never made.

      • UGH

Good point but then again I’m sure Will Smith would’ve figured out some other remake to push his brat into our faces with.

    • justme

How about waiting 4 years and wait for the kids to be in high school. Was I the only adult here that found little kids getting brutally beaten somewhat distubing?

      • SilentRage

        yeah you were.

You people are idiots. The movie was great (I would bet money that IF you went to see it, you didn’t do so with an open mind). My friends and I loved it, and the audience was applauding during the movie, which is an obvious sign of approval. So, take your cynicism and envy elsewhere.

Even the crappiest films have their fans.

Jaden Smith should forget Karate Kid go outside the box and totally do something unexpected…like a live action Boondocks movie. He looks just like “Riley” already. It’ll toughen his image a bit and give him more respect as an actor, instead of being Will Smith’s kid.

    • exactly

oh my god. that would be hilarious. i had just said that it’s uncanny how much he looks and sounds like riley. but i don’t know how studios would go for something so controversial with such young actors…

    • Lizzie

What a freaking BRILLIANT idea! LOL! LOVE it!!

    • hannah

That would be awesome, but the Smith’s probably wouldn’t let him do it.

I’m in for a sequel, the remake is really quite good.

I’m impressed with Jaden. He carried the movie for such a young age. Despite nepotism, he is talented.

i think it’s truly hard to rate “talent” in young kids. most of them are talented at acting. they usually haven’t picked up the amt of self consciousness that adult actors have to constantly fight off. that being said, the kid has an extreme amt of charisma (which is usually what makes a child star), but if i had the self confidence that growing up rich with two powerful and self confident hollywood players would bring… well i’d be tweeting this to my millions of followers from a movie set now instead of sitting jobless at home!

Remember parent trap? Picture this: jaden smith plays riley AND huey.and of course john whitherspoon plays himself as pops. And charlie murphy and samuel L go white face.

    @exactly
It is not hard to rate talent in young actors. I direct kids in junior high. Some are amazing, some not. Some are closed off emotionally, some are alive and real. Taking it beyond junior high … look at young Haley Joel Osmont. He was a genius for his age (for ANY age). It was clear to see. And Dakota Fanning. A great talent. Anna Paquin, Abigail Breslin … the list goes on. Then look at kids in some other movies or TV shows. They are just ‘ok’, or not very good at all, sometimes. Certainly, you can ‘rate’ talent. It’s still an opinion, but it CAN be informed and I think, close to a CORRECT opinion (if there is such a thing). On a side note, I used to teach Jaden’s brother, Trey. He was an awesome person. All heart, very respectful. I don’t know Jaden, but I wish people would stop calling him a brat and stop hitting on his parents so harshly. So much hate for someone you don’t know. Knowing Trey as I DID (granted, I don’t anymore), I definitely think that odds are Jaden is a good little guy.

“Hey, let’s fast-track a sequel to a remake!” Never has it been more apparent how Hollywood has resorted to eating its own s—.

  • Niix Starkyller

You mean he doesn’t die in the end of the first one? Thanks for the spoiler, EW! Gawwwwsh!

Please stop the jealousy and envy. Give due props to the first African-American cinematic royal family. All the negative comments in the world cannot stop the Smith express! And just wait until little Willow carves out her niche! The hate will be at a fever pitch then. Get over it!

Only three things in life are certain. Death, taxes and sequels.

  • ncx

Hey, why not. Overall box office attendance is steadily falling and they can’t raise ticket prices forever. Sooner or later the fat cats will have to face up to reality and start making real movies again. The more flops they churn out the faster it will happen. So you go boys, remake Gone With The Wind starring Jaden Smith…please. Hurry up and finish digging your graves so you can start burying yourselves and then the rest of us can get back to watching real movies.

  • Butters

Wow. You spent weeks talking about making a sequel to the movie you just remade? Weeks?

  • CyberPimp

    FAIL!

  • Betty

I love this movie adn sugardaddiesdate
