Image Credit: Barry King/FilmMagic.com James McAvoy has found his nemesis. Twentieth Century Fox is in negotiations with German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender for the role of Erik Lensherr, the man who becomes Magneto in the X-Men origin story X-Men: First Class. Fassbender, who most recently appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, has been a hot commodity of late: Rumor has it he was considered for the villain role in the reboot of Columbia Picture’s Spider-Man. Fassbender appeared in Spielberg’s Band of Brothers and garnered a lot of attention for his role in last year’s indie Fish Tank as well as his role as Lt. Archie Hicox in Basterds. He’ll show up this weekend in the Warner Bros. flick Jonah Hex.
First Class will be helmed by director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass). The film will depict the early years of the relationship between Charles Xavier and Lensherr, two young mutants who are first discovering their powers. The two are the closest of friends at first, working together to stop a huge global threat. They later become enemies, leading to an eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.
Production is set to begin this summer in London. X-Men: First Class is scheduled for release on June 3, 2011.

Fassbender and McAvoy? I’ll be there. What a hot pair!
*drool*
Wow! Wow! Wow! What a casting! I didn’t want to watch X-men but now I have to!
yes yes yes! I love Fassbender! He was one of the best things in Basterds and would be wonderful with McAvoy! I hope this happens.
ohhhh my goodness me too. He was the standout star in Basterds for me. And in 300. Hot.
oh this keeps getting better and better!! i really enjoyed him and his abs in “300″….yummy!
I’ve loved Michael Fassbender since “Hex” (and I do not mean Jonah Hex but the BBC series).
Here! Here! Me too! LOVED Fassbender in Hex!
Holy crow! Had no idea he was Azazeal!! Yeah, this movie is getting better and better.
it isnt news if everyone knows this already.
As someone who loves X2, I was feeling only dread for this movie. But now I’ll have to see it in the theaters because of Fassbender. argh.
So very tired of Super Hero Movies.
Luckily for me, plenty of other people are not! I’m really excited about superhero movies these days, partly because my husband is slowly turning me into a mild superhero nerd, partly because they’re almost always some good action-packed fun, and partly because mainstream superheroes have the kind of sexist tendency of being male which means that I get to enjoy some yummy eye candy. Bring ‘em on! (Although I do have to say that I wouldn’t mind a little more expansion into other heroes rather than going for a 4th X-men movie and a 4th Spiderman movie – I mean really, it’s kind of heinous that they’re rebooting Spiderman so soon.)
Don’t worry, there will be more expansions made into other superheroes soon. Captain America, Thor, and Green Lantern movies are all coming in 2011. The Avengers and the next Batman film are scheduled for 2012. The Superman reboot will probably come out in 2012 or 2013. Besides all those, there are a lot of other superhero films that have been proposed or planned but either do not have a release date or are yet to be greelit.
I agree with you about The Spiderman reboot though. It’s way too soon.
James McAVoy would make a great spiderman. And yes I have always thought Fassbender was hot.
Period piece action movies are not my favorite. They tend to stretch the technology of the day. Not that any fiction movie has to be historically accurate, but parts of Sherlock Holmes were just laughable. It’s easier when they’re set in the future. This movie should be set in the 1950′s to 60′s if they want to keep the current time line of the other movies. I hope it’s better than that piece of crap Wolverine movie was.
Well we don’t have to worry about poor casting with Fassbender and McAvoy. I just hope the writing shows as much promise!
I remember James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender were in Band of Brothers but they never shared any scenes together.
When are they going to make the long-delayed Ellen Page Lesbian Were-Wolf movie?!
Check out Michael Fassbender as Bobby Sands in Hunger!
Fantastic casting! Michael even looks a little like Ian McKellan. I’m stoked for this movie!
Wow, from what I’m reading this might be good.
