Marvel confirms Tommy Lee Jones will play Colonel Phillips in 'Captain America'

Once again Marvel has chosen to confirm casting months after strong speculation. But yes, it’s true Tommy Lee Jones will play Colonel Phillips in Captain America: First Avenger. Who knows? The studio is so late on the news, the guy may have already filmed his scenes. Regardless, when you see the movie next summer, count on Jones playing the important role of the man who recruits Steve Rogers to join Project Rebirth, the experimental project that leads to the creation of the Super Soldier. Marvel says the character will be updated for the film, which bows on July 22, 2011.

Jones can next be seen in the Sundance hit The Company Men opposite Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper. The Weinstein Co. is scheduled to release the film in New York and Los Angeles on October 22nd.

So far, the only casting misstep I’ve seen is Chris Evans as Cap. I’m hoping he can actually refrain from being smug, which is his usual routine.

“Sunshine,” “Cellular,” and “London”;; all movies where Evans wasn’t smug. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I tend to agree with the above poster (JLIHMB) for short. Chris is the only casting for this movie where I thought, “huh?” I would certainly hope that with their strong of successes that the Marvel people know what they’re doing and made the right choice.

Finally, someone sexy has been added to this cast.

Evans was surprisingly good in Sunshine, so I think he’ll be able to pull this off. Adding TLJ to any cast is always a good decision.

The last “superhero”/comic book movie that Tommy Lee Jones was in Batman Forever.

    I’m just saying….

    • Chris

      Batman Forever wasn’t TLJ’s fault….

actually rewatch it, the terribleness of Batman Forever can be attributed to Drew Barrymore and Debi Mazar.

Batman forever was the more of a result of Writing/directing… Two face was written wrong. The Dark Knight Two face was perfect.

oooo cant wait for this- i love super hero movies!!coming from an aspiring director, I would LOOOOVE to make a movie like that. I recently helped produce my first film and it was an amazing experience. Google Imadeamovie, and see what REALLY goes into making a film.

Not a fan of hearing that his character will be updated

Captain America is Marvel’s third oldest character behind Sub-Mariner and the original Human Torch. In popular culture his name recognition is very high. Not as high as Spider-Man, Bat-Man, Super-Man or Wonder-Woman but he’s on the next tier below them. So why give the character’s first major feature film some convoluted name designed to attract viewers to another movie not yet made? Captain America, alone, should be the title of this movie. Having said that I have no problem with Chris Evans in the role. It’s better than the foreign exports of the moment Sam Worthington, Christian Bale, or whomever else they can dredge up. I commend the choice. TLJ’s character, as far as I know, is some movie-made contrivance designed to give their vision context. It really doesn’t matter if he’s there or not.

I wanted Adam Sandler for Cap and Chris Rock for Thor! Tom Cruise woulda been a better iron man!
