The rumor that Josh Hutcherson is going to be your next friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has been stirring the Internet into a frenzy. But is the rumor true? Sony Pictures isn’t commenting, but sources seem to indicate that Hutcherson, 17, is the guy for the job. He’s screen-tested for the role, along with a plethora of young up-and-comers, including Jamie Bell and Aaron Johnson. But his name is the one that keeps on coming around.
Hutcherson has been acting for the past decade and is getting noticed for his role opposite Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in the indie film The Kids Are All Right, which opens June 9. He’s also one of the stars in Red Dawn, whenever that film finds its way to the big screen. The Kentucky native is next lined up to reprise his role as Sean Anderson in New Line’s Journey to the Center of the Earth II, though it isn’t clear yet if there is a deal for that movie. Should it go through, Journey, now being directed by Brad Peyton, should begin filming in October. The studio is anticipating a quick shoot, meaning Hutcherson could be ready to go as Spider-Man by the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011, which is exactly when Sony and director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) are planning to begin filming the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.
We’ll probably know little more about this until Sony makes it official, but stay tuned.

Beware! They are turning Spidey into the next Twilight. Ugh.
Hmm. In hindsight, the last incarnations of Spider-Man WERE like Twilight, with all that angst and romantic tension. But the actors were much more talented than the Twilight kids.
How?
they’re putting vampires in the reboot?
Heh Heh. Touché.
Twilight has nothing to do with vampires either.
Oh crap! I hate bloody Brits who can’t act. Now I can understand why the Brits think that everyone in the world talks like a funky Brit, but Spider Man is an American comic book character. He aint no wimpy European.
I liked Tobey Maguire better. His brand of geek was convincing. Looks like they’re looking for a tween heartthrob to sell tickets.
I agree.
One of the things about comic book characters is that they don’t age very quickly. Unfortunately for actors, people in the real world do age. Tobey is 35. And he looks 35. That’s older than Peter Parker has ever been in any of the books. The character works best when he is a high school kid or college kid trying to make ends meet. A Peter Parker who is pushing 40 is contradictory to the character. They ought to have gone younger to begin with. Whether we like it or not, the iconic Peter Parker we know is not an adult, he’s a kid. I think they’re making the right move.
He looks like a Peter Parker. Could be good but who knows. As harsh as the comic book crowd is, this kid better be good.
I still find it kinda kewl that the director’s name is Webb.
I find it kind cool that you still use the word ‘kewl’.
Why are they going forward with this reboot? So unnecessary.
I believe they are rebooting because Tobey MacGuire did not want to do any more Spidey movies.
$$$.
i remember taking my kids to see little manhattan (we live on the UWS). movie was bland and slightly racist (yes, there are more than white people in NY) but this kid’s a great actor–he was at ten, and i’m sure he is now.
can’t wait to see “the kids are alright”.
That guy is already 18?
Every superhero movie will now need Justin Beiber-age (Pretty sure I just coined that term : trademark pending : ) actor to become the next superman, batman…
It’s kinda like in the 80′s when all the old school cartoons were reinvented to highlight the earliest years of well known characters. (Pup Named Scooby/Flintstone Kids)
Next will be SpiderSperm and BatSperm and Supersperm… The next generation!
as much as i disapprove of this remake, josh hutcherson is a pretty good choice. he’s been stellar in most of his movies
I think he’s a great actor, but I don’t see him in a superhero movie.
I never saw Tobey Maguire in a superhero movie either but he was great!
Maybe I’m looking at the wrong pics, but he looks 12!!! WTF?
As much as I love Josh Hutcherson, I don’t want him to start doing superhero movies before he’s really an adult. On the other hand, I can’t wait to see him in The Kids Are All Right. I’m glad to see he’s getting more attention even though he somewhat broke out with his amazing performance in Bridge to Terabithia.
why not totally change things up and have Donald Glover from Community?
I really like that idea
if only..
most definitely agree
I’d be more interested in seeing Journey to the Center of the Earth II than this planned “reboot” of Spider-Man.
No, Josh, don’t do it! You’re too good for this.
Sorry but josh just doesnt look the part. Plus I think he is too good for the role. Who else is up for the role?
He is a good actor but at least they were considering someone within the right age range lol
He was the only salvagable thing in Cirque Du Freak.
Ding ding ding! We have a winner. And considering the amount of talent that was in that movie, it’s a pretty sad statement. I think the kid has super chops, and the fact that he managed to steal the spotlight from so many a-listers (in my book, anyway) says that he can carry any role, this one included. Let the haters hate, but as long as the writers and director don’t run it into the ground, I have a feeling they’ll be singing a different tune later down the line.
