'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' breaks box office records with midnight grosses

Twilight fever is showing no sign of abatement with the film’s third installment. In fact, fans of the series seem even more juiced up than usual. The film grossed in excess of $30 million from its midnight shows Tuesday in over 4,000 theaters across North America. This estimate surpasses the previous midnight record holder, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which earned $26.3 million last November, and now holds the new industry record as largest midnight gross ever. The film — starring Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner — has received the largest North American release ever, bowing in 4,408 theaters on Wednesday. Twenty-nine additional theaters will be added by Friday for a total of 4,437.

Eclipse marks the first Twilight film to receive a summer opening, a decision that seems to be playing out incredibly well for Summit Entertainment. Stay tuned over the weekend as we report the complete results.

this is why terrorists hate america

    • Rebekah

This comment is incredibily unintelligent. Terrorists hate America because of the rights we have. For instance, they hate our freedom of religion. They also hate our nation’s overall attitude concerning sex, among many other hot topic issues. Think before you make such a lame comment.

      • Joe

I think you missed the point of the comment Rebekah. I’m pretty sure he was going for humor there; not actually implying that terrorists hate America because of Twilight. Because, yes, that would be ridiculous haha.

      • wowie

Rebekah…you are lame! and stupid too….you dont understand sarcasm! :-/

      • Bubba

It was a funny joke I thought, but I’m also Twi-hater. And unlike Rebekah, I understand sarcasm.

      • JohnificationLivesInHisMom’sBasement

I agree with the original statement in the sense that the box office take of these poorly produced and acted films are the dumbing down of our society.

      • Ashley

Rebekah… what an idiot, must be such lonely person.

      • KC

This is supposed to be such a bad economy and these dopey fans are basically burning their money.

      • Ambient Lite

You’re right, KC, we should be spending it on PBR, fried chicken, and porn instead (like you).

      • HaHaHaHa

I cannot wait for the day when EW starts posting “Guilty Pleasures” articles and these horrible films will be at the top of the list.

      • KC

Ah, my old nemesis Ambient Lite. Where’s Heather2 and crispy to help you fight the good fight?
One of these days when/if you grow up and mature, I hope you will see the error of your ways. That is, if your intelligence level gets out of the below 80 range on an IQ test. Good luck with that.

      • nodnarb

I believe crispy was murdered by an insane Justin Bieber fan.

      • Ambient Lite

Oh, snap. KC’s questioning my intelligence. I’m sure if I was a little smarter, I’d feel the zzzzing of your 8th grade bullying. Duuhhh…

      • faffity

        Rebekah you are soooo stupid.
They hate America because we invade their countries and exploit their resources. Not to mention killing thousands of their civilians for everyone one they kill of ours.

      • Ambient Lite

I hope crispy comes back to life, rising like a phoenix from the ashes. I think that name was best suited for his temperament (this is not an insult, and he should know that) and should be reclaimed…FOR-EVAHHH

      • Chris

@Ambient LIte: Don’t you know porn is basically free now? KC now can funnel that money into more PBR and KFC! yeah!

      • Hec

Rebekah, lighten up. Terrorists hate America because we aren’t always Ha-larmed over stupid crap :P

      • Ambient Lite

That’s alot of chicken. Too bad his real doll is such a light eater.

      • Ian

Plus not all Terrorists are cut of the same cloth, are from the same nation, or have the same agenda. In fact i’m sure there are entirely u.s. based terrorists, only affiliated with themselves. If you are going to insist on P.C behavior at least apply it yourself.

      • twilight phobic

Rebekah, get a sense of humor! Sheesh!

      • Marina

@Ian- “are from the same nation” -that are doesn’t need to be there.
Terrorist is in the middle of the sentence so it doesn’t need to be capitalized.
        u.s. needs to be U.S.
        i’m should be I’m.
And you need a period on the end of P.C.
        Watch YOUR backwoods grammar idiot!

      • Ian

wow Marina..not only are you an idiot, you’re a petty little troll. Get a life twi-hag.

      • Marina

Ew, who says “petty little troll”? Haha. That’s pretty stank.
Hey, I got you though, idiot. You’re not Mr. Grammar now, are you? So I need to get a life? Because I’m the one looking up something I hate and spending so much time talking shiz about it, right? Looks like you need to get a life…and possibly one from this century. Your lingo is so stank/old.

      • Ian

Who says “stank” other than some ghetto queen circa 2001? Look, it’s obvious I bruised your little ego so if it makes you feel better you sure got me by correcting every mistake (real or percieved) in my random post on ew.com. Job well done. You get an achievment!

      • B

fafity… it’s because we don’t burn our girls’ faces with acid just because they want an education. wait i got more.. it’s because we don’t force our women to cover their faces because we believe they are full of temptation. Not done yet.. its because our religion does not require that we strap bombs to ourselves and blow up nightclubs.

      • B

Sorry faffity, not done yet… it’s because we don’t (honor)kill our daughter if she doesn’t love her 60 year old husband and shames us by dating someone in a different social class. Oh.. it’s because we don’t believe someone should be executed because he drew a picture of a major religious figure in a cartoon. What you think about that, faffity?

      • B

faffity, i’m not done yet. Because women here have the freedom to enjoy lame movies like the Twilight franchise without worrying about a few things. let’s list them. 1)being seen with a male who is not a relative. 2)wearing clothing that covers 90% of their body 3)just watching Western entertainment period 4)uh, oh yeah and being in public.

      • Marina

Yeah, my ego is so bruised after I corrected your mistakes. Plus you can’t act like correcting your mistakes was retarded because we’re on ew.com. You brought me out, I brought you out. Haha.
P.S. Stank is used a lot where I’m from, but if you weren’t from back in the day you would know that maybe. I’m not black. That was racist anyway.

      • Ian

You’re the one suggesting ghetto is black only..not me. Who’s being racist here?

      • Marina

Yeah, I’m sure you thought of white people when you said ghetto.

      • Bob vious

        It’s Sheldon disguised as Rebekah

      • hannah

ahh, maybe rebekah was replying to wow in kind and it is all of YOU who do not get sarcasm! you’re welcome for the amazing insight! please send your donations in cash!

    • LIVEITUP

      What a dumb comment!

      • @ Live

        As is yours

    • poop

      Too true wow, too true.

    • LOL

If Bella cries, the terrorists have won.

    • Ashley

I heard a girl got hit by a car on her way to the midnight show and died.. all I could think of was “great! One less annoying fan in the world” :-(

      • Diana

Wow…that’s pretty tasteless. What are you thinking?

      • Oster

I agree. I think all Twilight fans should kill themselves. If they can’t do that, then at the very least, they should be sterilized.

      • Ashley

and the mothers who encourage their idiot kids and also embrace this garbage should be put in concentration camps with the other idiot fans and do test on them. Hopefully make society better this way

      • EW???

tests should be done on them in concentration camps? Why isn’t EW pulling comments like this?

      • tony

Oh my goodness Ashley, your’e so shocking! That’s cool and cutting edge……

      • Marina

You guys are going to hell. That is horrible.
The only idiots on this page are the haters who are wasting their time on something they supposably hate.

      • Hec

        lol ashley

      • Ashley

Sigh.. not saying concentration camps were a good thing to begin with.. BUT thanks to the tard fans, we can turn them into a positive thing :-D

      • Ian

@ Marina I think you mean Supposedly not Sopposably. If you are going to lambast people for being idiots at least check your backwoods grammar first.

      • dee

Wow. I’m a loud and proud Twilight hater, and even *I* think that comment’s low.

      • Marina

@Ian- I never said sopposably. So before you try to “lambast” (cool 18th century word) use the word they did. SUPPOSEDLY.
Hey, how’d you find this post?

      • Sally

I don’t understand why she thought your’e post a on concentration camp was negative, especially since your original post was a mockery of a girl’s death. Your’e an idiot. Someone questioned if your post should pulled and you back from your statement. At least stand by your hate and idiocy.

      • Ian

um Marina, you’re original post is a few up for proof..re-read it. I guess you really are an idiot.

      • Marina

I meant this article…and no, I’m not an idiot.

      • Marina

And I wasn’t saying I wrote supposedly, I saying I didn’t write sopposably. I wrote supposably. So when I put supposedly in all caps, I was correcting it.

      • Wow.

That’s horrible to say! Someone lost their daughter, sister, friend, etc. Twilight backlash is one thing, but your total lack of empathy is taking it to a whole new level.

      • twilight is garbage

        LOL….

      • Ian

@mariana.. my point was that you shouldn’t blather on about everyone being an idiot while using words such as “supposably”. Simply put it made you look like a douche.

      • Marina

Whoa, that was so grammatically incorrect. Idiot. There you go getting all Christopher Columbus with “blather”. Dude, how old are you?
P.S. My names Marina, not Mariana.

      • Kaitlyn

ARE U SERIOUS I mean it’s just a stupid movie, but to wish someone dead what are u thinking??? I don’t really see the point in making such a hateful comment…I agree that the movies are a waist of time, but u don’t need to be so hasty about it :O

      • Ian

I’ll tell you how old I am. Wayyy too old to read and enjoy book like Twilight. Hooker.

      • Marina

        Obviously. Haha…
Hooker?Ha! Dude, seriously? At least you’re up to the ’90’s.

      • Ian

Can we just end this? I’m bored, you’re fat, lonely and desperate…this is going nowhere. I’m out.

      • Marina

        I won!
139lbs, 5’8. Call it fat if you want. Haha, I don’t care. :D I’m not lonely either, I’m a junior in high school, I still live at home with my family. Haha.
And desperate is the old guy who just gave in to an argument over comments on something Twilight to a teenage girl! Ahh, it was fun;)
        Later Ian:)

      • fm

I hear everyone talking about how negative it is for people to like these movies and how society would be better without them but what I dont understand is how anyone can comment when this whole message post is full of hate. People should look in the mirror before they judge others. Never is it acceptable for someone to say that just because you like something you deserve to die. If its like that then everytime someone likes something that you dont agree with, they should die. If you ask me, society would be better without people that think such ignorant things. So what if you dont like it, anyone who feels that anyone deserve to be put in concentration camps need to be extinguished themselves. Anyone who feels that people should die because they dont have the same interest as they do should be extinguished themselves. I have never seen such ignorance in my life. I hope everyone that posted these comments were under age because no adult could be so ignorant. If they are, than society is really in trouble.

      • hooiskellie

you seem like a really horrible person.

      • cindi

Exactly what about these movies creates such hate in you people. Concentration camps, terriorist, really people. GROWN THE F UP. If you don’t like the movie, don’t watch, don’t read and certainly, preferably, don’t comment. WE DON’T GIVE A F@## IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT. Keep things in persective people. And as for the lovely lady who corrected the grammer, you go girl. If you want to discuss something educationally, don’t make yourself look like an idiot by using bad grammer and worse spelling!! It makes you look stupid. Maybe there should be concentrations camps for idiots who can’t spell!

      • Stella

WOW, if you meant that comment, I can only pray for you! Sad, just sad to rejoice about a person dying just because she was a Twi fan! Me thinks that you need to get on some kind of medication and I mean fast!!

      • Mark

@cindi. Well get ready to reserve a spot in your spelling concentration camp because its “grammar” not “grammer”. ULTRAFAIL.

      • B

The internet is for people who love to spew hate in virtual setting and are to scared to deal with the real life consequences of talking sh@%. Save all the hate for people who made and actually liked “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” At least Twilight is sincere with it’s shallowness.

      • hannah

ok that’s just sick, ashley! i think you’re all being a little harsh, and the worst that can happen to the world if people take twilight too seriously is a few less people get married in the coming years because they “never found their edward/jacob” and the best that can happen is the teen pregnancy rate goes down because “edward likes virgins!” lol! think about it!

      • Emma

I’m really curious as to all of your guys’ taste in movies. I’m sure you guy’s don’t have any stupid movies that you like. I have read all the books and watched all the movies, but it’s not like I’m annoying and talk about it all the time. I’m aware that they aren’t oscar nominated films but, with the execption of twilight, they aren’t terrible movies. And as for you ashley, society would be better if it didn’t have you in it. You should be put in a concentration camp for saying such a stupid, ignorant thing. It’s just a damn movie serious people, god.

      • Nikki

That’s just terrible!!!! What kind of person are u 2 b happy someone has lost their life????? What if that was ur family member???? U R sick and something horrible is gonna come 2 u for dat!!!!! GOD sits high and looks low he sees and hears everything!!!! He should do away with idiots like u!!!!!

      • SATAN

Thanx for ur soul Ashley!!!! I’m glad u r so evil and demonic I like that!!!!I like dumb people like U!!!! I have a spot just 4 u in hell with me because that’s exactly where u will be spending eternity burning in a fire that never dies out!!!! U will B here in the pits of hell with me.I’ll c u soon.

      • Ian

@Satan back to the pits with you myth creature! Intelligent humans have clued into the fact that you don’t exist decades ago. We’re just waiting for the rest of America to catch up.

    • Ivan

I admit, Rebekah took it too seriously. But what he/she said was completely inane, insulting, and stupid. Why would you joke about terrorism? Thousands have recently died in the United States because of it.
I also don’t understand why “Twi-haters” try to make it so obvious that they hate it. It’s almost as if they want the attention. I myself don’t fantasize about Twilight, but I don’t rejoice when I find that a fan died on the way to the midnight showing and continue on by calling them “annoying”. The immaturity of such people never ceases to surprise me.

      • jodipo

I agree with you completely, and would add that the Twi haters spend so much time typing horrible things like wishing death on twilight fans. Seriously?Someone likes something you don’t and that’s a valid reason to wish death or torture on them? That is not only absolutely insane, but sick. What kind of disgusting person says things like that… because of a movie they say they don’t like? I enjoy baiting Twilight fans as much as the next person, but some of you need serious therapy

    • bob

and it’s also why I have lost almost all of my faith in humanity.

    • davem

Wow is right. This movie is ass. I compare it to a tyler perry. I hate america.

      Black power

      • hannah

i literally did not understand a WORD of what you said! at least the last like three sentences…O.o wtf?

    • t.t

for every twilight movie seat reserved, every miley cyrus song downloaded, every jonas brother ticket sold, every justin beiber album bought, a child cries of starvation in a third world country

    • LOL

Lol. I love how it made that much money and yet it still isn’t trending on twitter. Plus, everyone knows all the little twi-tards see it on the first day and then it’s a steep decline from there.

      • TexFan

Actually, we see it the first day, and several times after that. I’ll never understand why people who don’t like something spend so much time trying to rip down those who do. Grow up, children, and remember to finish school, and don’t do drugs!

      • Emily

Everyone who says it will have a stepp decline obviously doesn’t know anything about the movie industry. Every effing movie declines after the first day, that’s how it works. But, thanks for pointing our something super obvious “LOL” it’s much appreciated.

    • wino

im pretty sure Glitter did more damage for the US reputation than Twilight ;) anyhoo, looking forward to seeing the movie on monday. the reviews so far seem to be positive (at least more so than the first two flicks).

    • Michelle

I thought Heidi and Spencer were why they hated America

    • jasmine

i find it mind boggling just how many people who claim they hate twilight watch vids relating to it and read articles on it. doesn’t make much sense to me…

  • Jose

Predicting $80 million today, then by Sunday $175-180 million total.

    • Michael

$80 million on a Wednesday…K. I think that may be a tad over the top.

      • M&M

Instead of the Gulf Mexico disaster, why couldn’t the original prints of this film perished instead?

    • Bubba

Umm… Are you crazy? It’s not going to make 80 million in one day. Yes, it will make a ton of money today, but not 80 million.

    • Jose

Micheal and Bubba, The $80 million total is withthe $30 million it made in midnight shows, probably should’ve posted that in the actual day it will gross $50 million.

      • Lori

Don’t know why these rocket scientists think an $80 mil first day (including the midnight opening) is so impossible. New Moon did over $70 mil in its first day of release.

And all the idiots questioning the intelligence of the fans (and their parents) I happen to be both a fan AND the parent of a fan. I have a 140 IQ. I’d LOVE to know what theirs are.

    • LOL

I would say you were way too high, but since they all go see it at the same time that makes sense. I’m pretty sure it won’t make over 250 mil domestically though.

  • Arabang

Anyone seen this movie?Good or bad?

    • Rebekah

It’s actually much better than the first two Twilight films, thanks to vision of the new director David Slade. I think this film will actually surprise people.

      • Angela

I enjoyed the movie. The best of the three so far.

      • Arabang

        50% rottentomatoes.Not bad.

      • Woot

50% is not very good. Compare that to the Harry Potters (Prisoner of Azkaban is at 89%)

      • Marina

@Woot- and Maria Full of Grace has 97%, but what the eff does that have to do with Eclipse?

      • Woot

Are you serious? 1/2 the comments on this thread have been comparing Twilight to Harry Potter.

      • Marina

Yes, I’m serious. She didn’t ask if Harry Potter was better. The haters always bring up Harry Potter.

      • Woot

Oh the haters. Why would there be haters? Is it because twilight is about as poorly written as the essay I wrote in 2nd grade? Is it because the movies take good actors and make them moody and annoying? I just don’t understand the hate.

      • @Marina

You’re the one hating. Woot made a very valid comparison. It doesn’t make him/her a hater. You’re the hater for assuming that she’s hating. 50% is pretty much neutral and expected for a twilight film. I’m more shocked by the freakin’ 7% THE LAST AIRBENDER has right now!! WTF??!!?

      • Marina

I’m not hating. That was retarded.
Um…yeah I know that’s about right for a Twilight film…it’s not the kind of film that’s Oscar bait. It’s for the fans. That’s it, and if they’re happy with it, it doesn’t matter what critics think.
And as for The Last Airbender, I heard it was a huge disappointment for fans and critics. I guess that’s why. I know someone who liked the cartoon and was so ready for it, and they told me it was horrible and made no sense. Then there’s that thing about having no Asians, but I don’t know. I really have no idea what it’s about. I just saw on Twitter and heard from my friend it was horrible.

      • Woot

@Marina, I’m a dude just so ya know. Don’t really care about arguing anymore. All I’m going to says that the Harry Potter films are made for the fans, yet they seem to be able to garner critical praise… interesting.

      • Marina

I didn’t say you were a girl. I wasn’t arguing either. I was trying to help figure out why The Last Airbender had only 7%. Harry Potter and Twilight are two different movies based on two different things, so stop comparing them. If YOU like a movie, the only opinion that matters is yours. No one’s like “I liked this movie, until Roger Ebert called it horrible, so now I have to hate it.”

      • Woot

I know you didn’t call me a girl, the @Marina was referring to @Marina not you. The Last Airbender has a 7% because A. It’s not in the anime form it was on TV and B. M Night Shamylan directed it, when his specialty is thrillers.

    • carrol

Just saw it. Great action and lots of romance but for the third time I think they leave too much of the book out. Liked the ending better than new moon though. Go see it fans.

      • mom52

Just saw it this morning and have to agree. On the other hand it is awfully hard to condense a 700 page book into a 2 hour movie.

      • Liv

Not when 500 pages of the book are filler. :)

      • SilentRage

        lol Liv

    • TexFan

It’s the best one so far, although I still enjoy the books more, it was a good movie.

  • sad

its quite depressing that so many people love such bad films. its a shame that this movie made more money one midnight screenings than the hurt locker did overall. I really hope that this is not a sign of the average intelligence of America’s female youth.

    • Rebekah

Yes, it is sad that serious films of substance don’t garner more audience attention. However, there is nothing wrong with people enjoying something that may be silly, cheesy, sappy, etc. We can’t watch hardcore serious movies all the time. And everyone goes through a stage where they enjoy something that they may find ridiculous later on on life. Geez, just let people like what they want to like.

      • Dave

Except that a lot of the Twilight fans (not all of them, but a lot of them) don’t consider the Twilight movies to be silly, cheesy, sappy, etc. They think it is high art.

      • Ambient Lite

No, they don’t. You’ve got nothing, Dave.

      • Dave

Ambient Lite, maybe you don’t, but many do. I can guarantee you that many of the fans think of it as more than just silly, cheesy, and sappy.

      • Ambient Lite

Find me one, we’ll meet back here.

      • Dave

Oh Ambient, you must be joking. You’re trying to tell me that you have never seen fans of Twilight in these comments sections on EW.com (or anywhere else for that matter) going on and on about how amazing Twilight is and how amazingly written the books are and how fantastic the acting is in the movies? I remember someone commenting/complaining that New Moon wasn’t nominated for any Oscars, and said commenter was NOT being sarcastic. It’s really not that hard to find these people. I shouldn’t have to do it for you.

      • Lori

Dave…I can’t help wondering why you CARE so GD much. It isn’t keeping you from seeing the movies YOU enjoy, no one forces you to read the blogs or the silly comments made by infatuated teenage girls. So really, tell me…why the hell do you care if they think it’s the best thing since sliced bread? I happen to be a big fan of the books AND the films. I also happen to like Robert Pattinson. I’m not particularly fond of horrow movies or films based on cartoons, or dreck like “The Accidental Tourist” that won an Oscar back in the mid-80’s for some ridiculous reason. I hate basketball and think watching paint dry is more exciting than watching golf. The point is, I don’t give a damn if OTHER people enjoy those things. I don’t make a life out of taking every opportunity to bash things that other people enjoy just because I don’t. So why the hell do you care what the Twilight fans think of the books or the movies? Maybe if you had more of a life of your own, you would spend less time obsessing over what is going on in OTHER peoples lives. Ever think of that?

      • Ambient Lite

Come on, find me one fan that truly considers it to be “high art”.
        I haven’t seen one.
If anyone reading this fits that category, go ahead and offer yourself up. Just one.

      • Marina

Thank you so much Lori. Who can argue with that? No one.

      • SteverB

High art? Maybe not, but the cinematography is phenomenal in the two films I’ve seen — I’d expect no less from this one.

      • @lori

        Haters always hate.
        Deal with it.

    • sad

      *on midnight screenings

    • Enough Already

Shut up. Seriously, just shut up.

        You shut up.

@(@ambient light and @@ ambient light)this is NOT “VERY” true. it may be true of PART of the fan population of twilight, but not everyone! the part that is totally immature. i’ve worked around this demographic for years! twilight is not what’s wrong with them! if anything, it’s made them more tolerable! and how DARE you call them fat and ugly! how DARE you!? i’m not gonna go on that they’re all beautiful and slender, but that statement is just assinine and cruel!! and is it any worse to fantasize about a celebrity? they just as well not exist, because the average person not being proximal to that celebrity has no chance with them! and let’s see, have any of you gone to the trouble of putting down lord of the rings or harry potter fans? star wars and star trek fans? because they are as/more devoted than the twilight fans! (i realize these things are much more awesome than twilight, but as far as the obsession goes, they’re the only thing that comes closeoutside of maybe the sports industry) as far as the twelve year olds go, it’s not their fault they haven’t been exposed to the breadth of art that we who have matured have! and what buisness is it of yours what anyone you don’t know get’s tattooed on THEIR body! why is it pathetic to have something in your life that you’re passionate about? why are haters even READING these articles?! it’s to p1$$ people off! that’s all you want to do! i wish i had time on my lunch break or whenever you people choose, to bash and p1$$ off people who enjoy things that i think are stupid! i hate the music of icp, but i don’t seek out articles on them to put down them or their juggalos and jugglettes! they are entitled to like what they will, and as long as they don’t force me to listen to it, we won’t have an issue! the twilight fans aren’t hurting ANYONE! they’re annoying, and i know that as well as any of you! but they’ve never tried to mame, kill, or steal from me, or endanger me or any of my loved ones. and to go one further, as a movie industry employee, they have kept me in a job for the past 2 1/2 years!

    • chica

no more than Transformers is a sign of the average intelligence of America’s male youth. Some people just dont get the fact that even people, such as you and I who are above average intellect, like to watch movies that might be fluff, but entertain. Twilight may not be your thing, that’s ok, just as Tranformers may not be mine, but I dont be little people for going to see it or pass a judgement on society because they exists and are successul. There is something that delivers in theses Twilight films for millions of people, and no one is under the impression that these films are high art. They are guilty pleasures, and life is full of that.

      • Heidi

Interesting. You say that you are of above average intelligence but yet have at least four grammatical errors in your comment. Interesting.

      • Bubba

Very interesting. By having so many grammatical errors, I do not believe that you have the right to claim to be “above average intellect.”

      • Oh lord

@Heidi I didn’t know that in order to be above average intelligence you had to have an English major.

      • Jane

        The problem isn’t liking crap.
The problem is thinking Crap is not only GOOD but thinking its what EVERY book/movie should be like.
If Twilight fans could readily admit that their precious series is not as “amazing” “breathtaking” and “incredible” as they think.. then maybe people wouldn’t hate on it so much.

    • Eve

So, if someone likes Twilight, they are unintelligent? Tell me how that makes any sense. Let people have their opinions without trying to make them feel low.

      • well sort of

they could choose to watch something better. so i guess.

      • well sort of

they could choose to watch something better. so i guess it does make them unintelligent.

      • Ambient Lite

        Better how? Better than what?
I could say everyone who watched the A-Team or Knight and Day is stupid, but why would I care?? To each his own. Picking on Twilight fans is getting old and is sort of sad in and of itself.

      • Diana

        @well sort of

You can’t even capitalize the first word of a sentence, and you’re calling other people unintelligent?

      • Lori

Better according to WHO? YOU?? Who the hell died and made you the taste police? Remember this, opinions are like a**holes. Everybody’s got one, and just because YOU think yours smells like roses, doesn’t mean the rest of us want to deal with the stench. Why don’t you learn how to punctuate a friggin sentence, and then come back and talk to us about intelligence? In the meantime, we’ll like whatever the hell we like. And you can go play with your Transformer action figures and your video games. Because we all KNOW how smart playing video games for 10 hours a day must have made you.

      • @Lori

        WOW. what an immature comment.

      • @Ambient Lite

People pick on twilight fans because they’re ugly, fat,and dream of their “Edward” who DOESN’T EXIST!

      • @@Ambient Lite

This is very true. Twilight fans are some of the most pathetic people I’ve ever seen. Obviously, not all of them take it to that extreme (and I can deal with that, because they can like whatever they want), but when you see people getting whole passages from those books or Edward’s hair tattooed on their A*S! Or hearing these 12 year olds profess their “undying love” for a FICTIONAL glittering rock!! Or seeing them claim that Twilight is one of the BEST works of ficition or film EVER…then it’s really hard not to interject. There comes a point when it’s just ridiculous and you start to wonder about their sanity.

      • wino

sorry haters, two hours of my life watching ONE movie does not exemplify who i am as a person. nor does it signify my intelligence level. to claim otherwise is silly and immature….but what else do you expect on the “internets” ;)

    • Lonnie

Its a sign of the males too. i’m 26 and love the books. Cant stand it when people insult movies they dont understand. Just shut up and go back to the Hurt Locker. I’ve not seen it as Im sure youve not seen Eclipse, but Im going to bad mouth it just like you do. Glamourizing and profiting from war is tasteless. The fact that that movie even exists shows how sick America is. At least Eclipse has some sort of moral value. Believe it or not, it actually teaches abstinence before marriage. The Hurt Locker does what now?

      • Joe

I guess part of me gets upset because when stuff like this does well, it means the studios will turn out more of the same junk. I felt the same way about Transformers. It’s easy to say to each his own I just get frustrated because I look at the movies that Hollywood produces today and most of them are pretty dumbed down, and it’s becaus people flock to stuff like this.

      • RyRyNYC

Lonnie, ur a guy? straight guy?

      • @Lonnie

“Believe it or not, it actually teaches abstinence before marriage.”
It also teaches that it’s OK to throw your life away for a boy, that you don’t really know what you want and that men are better at making your decisions for you.
The Hurt Locker actually has some very meaningful things to say about the futility of war and the damage war does to soldiers. It doesn’t glamorize anything, and only someone who hadn’t seen it would think otherwise.

      • i feel bad for you

All movies glamorize and profit off of something, thats pretty much the point of movies (and video games, and tv shows, and music). so are you against any movie that is based off real events? Is that why you watch movies taking place in a fantasy world? And also, the hurt locker teaches the horrors and difficulty of those in wars. seriously, go back to working at Mcdonalds. also there is this wonderful show called the oscars, that reward quality film. watch it sometime/

      • Jose

Lonnie, sure Twilight teaches abstinence, but Twilight bashers are criticizing the fact that ultimately, Twilight represents women and the anti-feminist need to be rescued be a knight in shining armor. Also, I didn’t like The Hurt Locker, but the themes are pretty obvious, how the war(not just the war in Iraq mind you, but any war at all) can lead a human to almost lose his humanity and become addicted to the danger out there.

      • Karine

@Lonnie – Did you say you WEREN’T going to trash The Hurt Locker? Because, well, you just did. While I don’t find the Twilight franchise particularly riveting, while I thought Hurt Locker was quite well done, I have seen the movies and I understand the entertainment value for people. (I teach 18 year olds. Try to relate to them without knowing Twilight!) I know brilliant people who read deeply intellectual material who also LOVE fluff pop culture. Enjoying Twilight doesn’t mean anyone stupid, unintelligent or immoral. It’s simply taste. As for the what it “teaches” you, I think the fact that we, as a culture, are worried so much about the lessons of the movie is indicative of a larger problem: that we leave values to be taught by the movies alone. Negative messages, if you believe Twilight has them, can be mitigated by other sources, such as family and education. There are problematic things about the movies, but there are also some decent ones as well. If Twilight does contain “negative” messages, so what? Movies- and authors and moviemakers- shouldn’t be held responsible for what’s lacking in other areas of society. At the very least, people should appreciate that the film sparks some sort of dialogue.

      • Lea

        “eclipse has moral value”
        MORAL VALUE?
        *laughs uncontrollably*
        Good one ;)

      • @Lonnie

Do everyone a favor and NEVER associate The Hurt Locker with something as pathetic as twilight ever again.

    • marisa

first off liking something has nothing to do with intelligence…it’s preference…second with all the other reality going on in a persons life sometimes it’s nice to have something to escape to…whether it’s movies, books, or whatever…who are you to judge anybody??

      • Suri

        I completly agree…
They talk about Us wasting our time enjoying something,..but honestly their wasting their time hating on it…

      • @Suri

People waste their time liking this crap.

      • Mikka

@Marisa- I agree with you. Reality can be harsh, and there are times when it is good to escape.

      • hannah

@ (@suri) “people waste time liking this crap.” ??? you just did EXACTLY what suri was talking about!!! wasting your time hating on us wasting our time LIKING it!!! geez!

    • dee

can you tell me why on earth any teenager would *want* to see hurt locker? who’s going to see gritty war dramas in high school? that’s the most ridiculous comment ever.

signed, a 30+ year old that saw both

      • Jose

        Hey, that’s insulting!
I was 17 when I saw The Hurt Locker, and I saw it because of its strong word of the mouth and all the acclaim it was getting from critics.

      • Tim

Saw Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line in theatres when I was 16 and loved both of them. After that, I rented Apacolypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon and loved them too.

      • Marina

Jose wants to talk insulting. Wow.

      • sam

im 14 in high school but i saw the hurt locker and thought it was with district 9 and star trek as the best films of last year

      • Woot

Seriously Dee that is insulting. I also was 17 when I saw the hurt Locker, because I WANTED TO

      • Holly

Just because SOME teenagers enjoy fluff where a bunch of hot guys take their shirts off and angst on camera- DOES NOT mean that other teens don’t have intellegence and can recognize a good movie.
        Talk about insulting.
Because of twilight, people expect ME, as a teen girl, to have a low IQ and not be interested in movies with more depth.
        :/

    • shark jumper

Not just youth, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. asked Elana Kagen if she was Team Edward or Team Jacob (or if she would weigh in on “the vampire versus the werewolf”) in her Supreme Court confirmation hearings. That’s a true story. *sigh, hangs head in shame*

      • Lucas

        What did she say?

    • Tracy Stewart

Sorry to disapoint however you can not compare the ‘take’ for two totally different movies. One is about love and romance and the other is about the brutality and loss of war. BTW a lot of military people did not like the hurt locker – they know to much to be able to really believe it.

The Twilight series is a ittle strange in that I have never seen haters and non haters care so much about the ‘polls’ or what the critics think. I love the story and am happy to sit throught a movie for a few hours and just enjoy. Take it for what it is, we are not talking ocsar here and even the actors all say it is for the fans of the books. Yes its great to get others into the story – hence why more box office cash this time – but at the end of the day why see if if you are such haters?
Last comment and I will get of my soap box – all those who compare this series to anything to do with the Holocust (concentration camps by the way), the treatment of POW’s in WWII by the Japanese or people getting killed in an accident really need to examine your lives and yourselves if you find this remotely funny or amusing. The are some things you can joke about however not things like this. Would you joke about the Twin Towers if an american?????????

      • Dan

Twilight is trash. GO find a better book.

    • hooiskellie

i don’t believe an individual’s personal taste in film is an accurate indicator of their intelligence.

      • swthompson

I agree. I’d like to point out, however, that the soundtracks are my favorite parts of these films.

    • TexFan

I don’t think you understand the idea behind “entertainment”. If we want to see bombs and death on the level of the Hurt Locker, which I did see, than we can watch the news. Those of us who enjoy Twilight, enjoy the entertainment portion of this.

  • Why God?

    Make stop..please make it stop.

  • Jacquelyn

It is all okay…Harry Potter will surpass it in a few months…no worries.

    • Lonnie

yeah, but head to head Twilight would win out.

      • @Lonnie

If that’s the case, why did Summit release Eclipse in June instead of in November against Deathly Hallows?

      • Joe

yeah but Harry Potter will still be relevant in 50 years.

      • Bubba

Exactly what @Lonnie said. Huh? Answer that one.

      • Ambient Lite

Why do HP fans manufacture this comparison/box office battle/competition between the two franchises?? No one’s going for this but you.

      • LJ

You really seriously think the tweens and teen fangirls would beat out the diverse audience that adores Harry Potter? LOL. Especially when the next 2 Harry Potter movies are the final chapter in the story? Sorry you’re delusional. Eclipse grossed so high today because it’s going to be as frontloaded as New Moon was.

      • @Ambient Life

Um, didn’t you feel the need to bring up Twilight on the very first page of the HP trailer article? Pot, kettle, black?

      • Ambient Lite

Ah, but I only did it ONE time, meant as sort of a playful nudge to those HPers who do this EVERY time.

      • Adam

Ambient Lite, Twilight fans do it too.

      • lizzie

Seeing how Half Blood Prince made over 900 MILLION dollars at the box office last year, making it WAY higher then New Moon…
Harry Potter wins this round and will win every round.
        Harry Potter > Twilight
        The end.

      • @Lonnie

LMFAO!!! You just keep coming with the zingers!! WTF do you mean head to head??? If Harry Potter was in the theaters at the same time as twilight, TRUST ME, a VAST majority of the population would choose to see Potter.

    • @Jacquelyn

Who cares about whether Harry Potter surpasses it in a few months? (crickets)

      • Jacquelyn

I am just making sure that no one gets too excited about the record because it will only last for five months and then it will be blown out of the water. I would say it to any film that made the record…Twilight or not.

      • Marina

The Twilight Saga: New Moon beat Harry Potter’s record for biggest midnight opening.

      • @Marina

And yet even with that, it still didn’t beat its overall box office.

      • Marina

And Eclipse beat New Moon. But anyway, This article is about Eclipse having the biggest midnight opening. Which is Eclipse:)

      • @Marina

I do not think that any of the Twilight movies will be able to withstand the pressure at the box office of the LAST Harry Potter film. The difference is that there is also quality involved with the Potter films…just you wait, I would be willing to put my life savings on the fact that Twilight will never stand to the numbers that the last two installments of Harry Potter will post.

      • @marina

TOTAL gross is much more important then Midnight.
Yes, You Twihards are excited about the movies.
Yet they don’t even pass the 300 million mark domestically.

      • SilentRage

IMO “die hard” twilight fans are just as pathetic as “die hard” hp fans, instead of comparing numbers get off your computers and get a life. Unless you’re receiving some form of check from one of the two movies why do you care which one makes more money? Enjoy what you enjoy and stop acting like 2nd graders.

      • hannah

somebody’s also got to do the math! twilight saga=5 films, hp=8(2 in 3d!) harry potter will without doubt beat twilight in the end. and even though twilight is a fad, we can’t make the statement that it will be irrelevant in 50 years! after all, it IS about eternal love! aside from the acting, which has even improved a bit through the saga, there IS quality film-making being done on them! effects, cinematography, sound, fight choreo! and the music is top notch! the hate is really getting exhausting, though. i wish the haters would find something else to do! jonah hex! GO! insult the only crappy movie josh brolin has ever made, and the most recent turd in megan fox’s filmographic crown!

      • @Lonnie

Because NO ONE likes it, but you delusional people. You should read TIME’s new article: “5 Reasons Why Harry Potter Trumps twilight Anyday.”

Or their other article: “Forget twilight: Deathly Hallows trailer reminds us why Harry Potter still rules.”

      • hannah

no one likes it but delusional people? well, you must love it! because you appear to have the corner market on delusional!

  • dipshat

Told you it was gonna be huge! Wish it was Toy Story 3 though :(

    • Ryan

Toy Story 3 will win out in the long run. Eclipse will perform like New Moon wherein it’ll get a huge opening (which it did), but taper off quickly.

      • Lori

New Moon grossed $297 million in the US alone in 4,124 theaters. Compare that to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, which grossed only $5300 more and it was in over 300 more theaters than New Moon. That’s right, FIVE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS. On an additional 331 screens. So all the HP fans going on and on about the popularity of the 2 franchises, and how much MORE popular HP is, look at the numbers, folks. It’s a hell of a lot closer than you think.

      • Lori

And Toy Story was a cartoon aimed at little kids. No comparison, and pretty stupid of you to try to make one.

      • Adam

Isn’t it funny when Twilight fans say “why do the Harry Potter fans have to bring up Harry Potter in an article about Twilight,” but then they bring up Harry Potter themselves in an article about Twilight? Well Lori, you did just that. Why, I’m not really sure. Dipshat and Ryan mentioned Toy Story, yet you felt it necessary to bring Harry Potter into the conversation.
Lori, if you want to talk about popularity, fine. Let’s put the obvious debate about quality aside for now. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince made $934 million worldwide, while New Moon made about $710 million worldwide. Of course that’s a fantastic box office gross for New Moon, and I won’t at all diminish it because I would be foolish to do so. But it’s still far less that Half Blood Prince’s global box office total. So in reality, Harry Potter is a much more popular franchise. And don’t forget that Harry Potter has a brand new theme park to boot.

      • @Lori

Um…Lori? I’m not sure where you’re getting that HBP made only five grand more than New Moon. I think you’ve left off a zero or three. HP grossed roughly 301 million ($301,959,197), and New Moon grossed roughly 296 ($296,623,634) million. If we want to talk exact numbers, HP made $5,335,563 more than New Moon, according to the totals on Box Office Mojo. 5 MILLION more. Not 5 THOUSAND. Again, I’d like to know where you’re getting the numbers for that statement.

      • @Lori

        Lori needs to get laid.

      • Reggie

        @Lori

There’s a huge HUGE difference between 5 thousand and 5 million. Before you rant, it’ll really help if you have your facts straight. And there’s no disputing the 200 million difference worldwide between Half-Blood Prince and New Moon.

I’m no Potter fan and certainly no Twilight fan. Just a tip that you might want to good research before you present your evidence.

      • @Reggie

“Just a tip that you might want to do good research before you present your evidence.”

And presenting it in ranting CAPITAL LETTERS, no less. lol Honestly Reggie, I wouldn’t expect a response from her. Really, if I’d made a mistake that huge, after all that talk above about the 140 IQ and the snide, sarcastic remarks about people being “rocket scientists,” I’d probably be too embarrassed to say anything. lol

    • Bubba

      Toy Story 3 ftw!!!

      • Paula

  • Ryan

No surprise here. It’s expected given how New Moon did 26mil midnights last October.

However, watch out for a very VERY steep fall tomorrow. I bet the fri-sun weekend won’t even match the potential 75-80mil gross it will do today (Wed, 6/30)

If you want to talk about a sharp decline, what was the excuse for the HP movie? they made almost the SAME amount of money, and HP was on more screens. Don’t make guarantees. YOu’re going to be awfully surprised come Tuesday morning when the weekend grosses are published.

      • @Lori

Um…Lori? I’m not sure where you’re getting that HBP made only five grand more than New Moon. I think you’ve left off a zero or three. Lori- Your numbers are WAY OFF!
Half Blood Prince made $934 million worldwide, while New Moon made about $710 million worldwide.
        HARRY POTTER is still better.
Just accept the fact that the twilight fad will end in two short years and then it’ll be over.
No one will give a f*** about Edward, Whiny Bella, and pedowolf.

      • Paula

Please check back fri when you see how hard it dropped from Wed. Also, check back again at the end of the summer when you see that despite a 170mil Wed-Mon total, it still struggled to barely get it’s head above 300mil. Heck, it might even fall short of it like New Moon did.

      • @Lori

        Go to bed, little child.

      • cindi

Okay, I love both series and want them both to do well. But to haggle over how much more money HP made than New Moon is just rediculous. If you want to go there, don’t go by box office go by net profit the way the studios do it (you know profit minus the cost to produce it). Not sure how much HP cost, but I know it was a heck of a lot more than the less then 60 million Summit used to produce New Moon! So if you go by that, New Moon won hands down.

      • @cindi

Uh Cindy….Lori was the one dragging out the numbers over here. I just corrected her errors. Also, I wouldn’t really call New Moon a winner, since it was a horrible movie. HP spends more, because they actually want to create something good that will be around ten years from now. The same can’t be said for Summit, who continues to make a buttload off these movies, yet their budget is still ridiculously low, which shows in the bad production value and the horrible special effects.

      • @cindi

No. No. No. If you go by profit, the HP film still win. Especially when you factor in merchandise sold, actual ticket sells, etc. Harry Potter still takes the crown. When you also look at overall quality, acting, etc…Harry Potter again comes out superior. HBP received 1 Oscar nomination..was shortlisted for another 7 and was also nominated for 2 Baftas. How many nominations did twilight receive again (and I’m referring to real awards).

      • dee

Well, Twilight was nominated for Razzie Awards. Do they count as real awards? lol

…and cougars in their 40s drooling over a teenage boy. Maybe there are more female pedophiles in the world than we realize?

      • Sadie

“OMG.. TAYLOR!! TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFF!!”
Its sad that its the lame TwiMOMs who are worse then the teenyboppers.
At least with teens you can say theyre young/immature/dont know how crappy it is.
However, if its a 30+ adult WOMAN drooling over hot guys who could be their SON… now, that’s just pathetic.
TwiMoms are far worse then the teens.

That means you are a babe magnet. In your dreams.

If you don’t think that Twilight has more merchandising than HP, I think you are wrong. Yes, HP movies are better, they spend a lot more money for them. But when WB started making them they knew they had a huge audience. Summit didn’t know what they had. For all they knew the film could have flopped. Now that they know, I wish they would spend a little more but Eclipse is fabulous. And I was going on movie to movie, nothing else. 250 million vs. 53 million for New Moon, of course there will be a difference.

  • Diana

Ohhhh…. here we go. Bring it on haters… you people are a riot!

    • Eve

      Lol. As per usual

  • Katie

Not surprising at all, but it will drop something fierce. That’s the biggest problem the movies have — they burn through the demand way too quickly.
I saw it earlier today and while it IS better than the last two, it’s still not great by any means. It was outdone by its own trailer reel (one trailer in particular…).

    • Reesa

Saying it’s better than the last two isn’t really that much of a compliment.

In Eclipse’s case, it’s like saying a shirt not washed for weeks is better than 2 other shirts that have been on the hamper for over a month.

      • Josh

Yeah, I read a review today that said “it’s the best Twilight movie so far, but that’s like saying you caught the best STD.” LOL

    • Sadie

Best twilight movie so far… but still crap compared to everything else.

  • Jess

Man, I did the good BF thing and accompanied my girl to that movie last night. Just when I thought George Lucas was the undisputed king of wooden dialogue and cringe inducing love stories (just check out the horrific Anakin/Padme love story in the prequels), here comes Twilight to give it a run for its money. I brought it up to my girl on the way home and she didn’t even try to defend the bad acting and dialogue. Nevertheless, she still liked it though..go figure.

    • springs

Haha. I’ve decided that I’m going to go see it, but I’m definitely going alone. I wouldn’t subject any of my friends to my guilty pleasure that is Twilight. :)

      • Twix

I agree that the dialogue is sorely lacking, and the acting even more so. I admit they did a much better job in this one than the other 2, even though they were still bad. I wonder though whether you have read the novels? The dialogue in the novels is cheesy, and simple, for the pure fact of helping emphasize the deeper end of them. For the movies they are also doing this, just not as well as the novels did. Your comment is stating the obvious (for which I applaud you, especially the Star Wars comparison. I wholeheartedly agree with you on that), as I said before. At least you actually saw it, and have justification for your comments. Most of the people on here have not even done that, and are simply critisizeing and complaining. If you do not support the film, that is your perogative. Being one of the few people who actually read the first novel before anyone even knew it existed (back when it was just another book on the shelf at Chapters that had an intriguing cover), I despise all the “Twi-Hard crap”. I go to see the movies simply because I truly enjoyed the novels (and as an English professor nonetheless), and wanted to see how film producers would recreate them. Like I said, yes the dialogue is lacking, the acting could use improvement. Let the fans of the films have their happiness and excitement. We receive so little of it in this day and age, that to discourage and reject leads only to unhappiness for many.

      • @Twix

wow. If watching two guys take their shirts off and angst over a whiny marysue gives you “happiness and excitement”…
        then your life must SUCK!
