I am officially over Mel

I am still very sympathetic to this man. He’s given be so much pleasure over the years.
-

Duh Lisa – of course you wont boycott his work – you are paid to watch his movies.

Seeing someone pose as Devin Faraci is just plain weird. Aim higher!

Well, I heard Whoopi say today that he’s not a racist…not the Mel Gibson that she knows. I think they are having a very bad argument and there’s a custody battle going on and he said things to degrade her. He could be feeling pressure for leaving his wife, having to split the assets, and realizing that he shouldn’t have left his wife for this woman. If I were Mel, I would get the he**l out of the U.S., go back to Australia and disappear for a while. maybe produce some movies under a pseudonym, because nobody’s going to bankroll a movie with him in it. Not only that, he could be facing jail time for the violence. That won’t do HER any good, because they he’s in jail and not earning any money to support her and the baby.
I’m sure his wife wouldn’t have taped their conversation and he knows it and prob. regrets that he left his wife.
-
etm
Didn’t Whoopi also defend Roman Polanski recently on The View? Is she forgiving or what?
-
cdevene
I have been over him since his first big arrest in Malibu years ago. It’s been downhill for him since. If he never works again, he still has enough money to support all his women and children. If he starts bankrolling his own projects, he’ll probably (or should) go broke real fast!
-
Pat
He did bankroll his last film and made a ton of money in doing so. I doubt financing his own films will ever bankrupt him.
Say what you want about him being crazy,(which he seems to be), but the guy makes entertaining movies. -
monnie
whoopi also made excuses on “the view” for michael vick; i certainly don’t give her opinions much weight
-
RaRa
monnie – you took the words right out of my mouth regarding Whoopi’s credibility. That said, I agree Mel has some major anger issues, and he turns really ugly when he gets mad – or drunk. That said, his nasty personal life probably won’t stop me watching his movies. I just don’t fantasize about him anymore, like I did 15 years ago.
-
paula
Well, my husband is black, I am white. When we have really bad arguments, I have never in my 20 years with him denigrated him or his race. We try to be civilized in all we do, and apparently Mel cannot. My major problem with Mel is that he has elevated his own standards so high, he is supposed to be a man of God, I think not. At the very least, he needs anger management classes, or many just some class…whatever happened to character?
-
ts
I think using the term “pack if Ni***rs” goes way beyond just degrading Oksana. Pull your head out.
-
Ausgirl
Go back to Australia?? We don’t want him back! He was born in New York, and can happily stay there. He was well known here for his drinking and general bad behaviour, even as far back as the 70′s and 80′s. This man is simply not a nice person.
-
Ethan Bishop
Its clear that Gibson has behavioral and anger problems. However, I do not feel that Gibson is an outright racist. He appears to be of the mindset – “I’m not a racist, I hate everyone equally.” Now, I can’t speak to what Oksana must have done to push him over the edge but I am pretty sure it wasn’t because she forgot to turn the light off in the living room. Everyone gets angry and says things that they later regret. I know I am a perfect example. Lets just hope Gibson’s career does not go as far south as Cruises. It may be too late to most!
-
J
Just because Whoopi Goldberg doesn’t find him racist doesn’t mean that he isn’t. You can find a member of any community to say anything, one of the wonders of diversity!
-
Ken taylor
Mel is worth close to 1/2 Billion with a “B”, I’m sure she and the child will want for nothing!
-
taran
I used to like Whoopi, but after her defense of Roman Polanski, I question her judgement. Whoopi saying that Mel isn’t racist doesn’t convimce me he’s not. Besides, I know people who are racist and are nice as pie to the people they hate to their faces. It’s what they do the rest of the time that counts.
-
fish eye no miko
1. Whoopi defended Roman Polanski. That’s more than enough for me to not give a **** what she say about ANYTHING anymore.
2. “realizing that he shouldn’t have left his wife for this woman.”
Yeah, it’s almost like being an adulterer has consequences or something, huh? Who could have guessed?
-
Kelloggs
Whoopi Goldberg doesn’t live with Mel nor does she sleep with him, nor did she have a baby with him. Most racists are undercover.
-
Michael
If you use racist, homophobic and/or misogynistic slurs, you are a racist, homophobe and/or misogynist. There might be degrees of each, but that changes very little.
-
Hey Lady
I pretty much agree. I think he is dealing with his own demons. He said 3 years…what did she think getting involved w/him was going to get her? Just the baby!…she wants the money. pleassssssseee!!!
-
shirley
I agree, she looks sort of creepy and reminded me of Octomom. I think she was trying to blackmail him with the recordings. And got him good and mad then started to record the conversations. You notice she is not saying much, just recording and planning on how to count the money she will get. His friends are saying she is guilty of shaking their baby, and that was one reason he was so mad.
I guess some people have the luxury of never arguing with their mates..those people sometimes have some nasty skeletons of their own in their closets. I have said and done some pretty awful things I am not too proud of myself in the heat of an argument with my husband. Why was she recording him, if not to use it against him later? That is not love, she was using him to further her career and get at his money. He was dumb to fall for it., but he is a man after all.. -
OMLo
I agree with your comments. M.Gibson is a very talented man. I believe he has been set up for extortion. They had a fight, she got on tape exactly what she wanted. If she wasn’t after something why on earth would she stay and listen to that rant. She obviously wasn’t scared of him.
I’m sure Mel Gibson isn’t worried about money or the WMAgency. …just saying
-
DivaSoulSista
I have a lot of friends of all races, religions and orientations.(I am black, Christian and straight if that matters). Being nice to Whoopi has nothing to do with him being a racist. When people are angry or drunk, they let their guard down and their true feeling come out. I’ve had white friends get drunk and say the most racist things in front of me. When I confront them they respond with “You aren’t like the rest of them,” as if that is a compliment. These people are no longer my friends. Anyway, Mel made an exception for Whoopi that’s all. He placed her, and probably Danny Glover, in a category separate from the rest of us N’s. And like others have said, she defended Vick and Polanski too.
-
DivaSoulSista
What does befriending Whoopi have to do with him being a racist? As a black woman, I’ve had ‘friends’ say racist things to my face. When I call them on it, they say, “YOU aren’t like the rest of THEM,” which is supposed to make me feel better. Racists often make acceptions for the few they actually like. You’d think Whoopi would know that … but like others have said, she supported Polanski and Vick too.
-

Racist, MIsogynist, homophobe and don’t forget
ANTI-SEMITE!!!!! -
meliot
Obviously his problems stem from alcholism. I see this first hand from my 24 year old son who when not drinking is a pleasure to be around, but when on a binge is the nastiest person. Hope he can get some help for this problem. My heart goes out to all those who love him.
-
chamlo
Thank Lianna for mentioning that the degrating and can I say verbally abusive treatment towards his ex-girlfriend. Why is everybody focusing only on the racism and past examples of anti-semitism but not on the sexism? Even if it was an argument, isn’t this the same guy who called a cop “sugar tits”. If I was a woman in Hollywood, I wouldn’t work with him (Jody Foster…rethink the promotion of your movie!)
-

-
jodipo
i have been over his since his all knowing christian bullcrap when he did Passion. It was torture porn plain and simple.
now knowing he is a woman beating racist with a serious need for medication I am no interested in him as a person. I probably would not boycott a movie of his if the other actors are good enough or whatever. I didnt boycott To Cruise when I found out he was bat@*$ crazy, and I loved The Pianist so dont boycott Roman Polanskis pedophile a$$. It all depends on the project, not the person.
-
Josh
Why is Cruise’s name lumped in with a rapist and a woman beater/racist?? Sure, he believes in Scientology and, like many celebrities, feels his ideals and thoughts are superior to yours and you should believe as he does. But comparing him to Polanski and/or Gibson is an insult to the man.
-
Noelbelle
I don’t think he was accusing Cruise of being on the level of a girlfriend-beating racist or a paedophile, but he did go through a PR nightmare.
-
Diane
Josh
I couldn’t agree more with you. Cruise might be a little nuts, but he’s not a racist or a woman hater. It’s like comparing a woman getting her hair dyed to Heidi’ plastic surgery.
-
Julia
To Josh – the reason Cruise is lumped in with Polanski and Gibson is because he’s a freak that says and does things that make people uncomfortable. To say he’s just a Scientologist is a misnomer – Scientology is a dangerous, selfish, and destructive cult. I’m an equal opportunity avoider – any actor/actress who is an active Scientologist gets my snub, and not just because they are anti-Christian and anti-Semetic. Scientology is not a “harmless religion” – it is a dangerous, destructive cult.
-
Anna
Wow, jodipo, you feel pretty strongly for someone with no clue what they’re talking about! If you were familiar with the story of the crucifixion, then you’d know that “torture porn” was kinda the way they rolled back then. And that movie changed the lives of alot of people. If you want to go after “torture porn” mongers, look up the True Blood blogs…”or whatever”
-
wakeforce
All Mel has to do to redeem himself to the religious fanatics is make another Jesus film. They will flock to see that!
-
Jon Thomas
Agreed. Tom Cruise is psychotic and verbally attacks and threatens people all the time. However, like Mel Gibson, and I think he’s a great actor. What they do outside of their job I could care less about, I’ll still watch both of their movies. Mel Gibson is an amazing actor, and no matter how much that new golddigger of his wants to trash him (and clearly America WANTS Mel to fall HARD) I still think he’s a very talented man and I’ll continue to support him. He’s not racist. If that WAS him on the tapes, then clearly he was just angry and she was working to get him that fired up. She so clearly wants to be a victim in a BIG story. Mel may be the last true old-fashioned and honest American left today! Love that guy!!
-
To Julia
You could say the same about any other religion, it’s like they don’t have their history of looking bad thanks to religious nutzos. So far neither Tom nor any other famous Scientologist has done anything “dangerous, selfish and destructive” (and no, jumping on a couch doesn’t count). Mel Gibson on the other hand, IS indeed dangerous, selfish and destructive, and there is hardcore proof backing that fact. However you personally feel about Tom Cruise and Scientology, you really cannot lump him in with Mel Gibson. The only way they can be compared is in terms of PR, and even then I feel that as clearly erratic and dangerous Mel is, he has a better shot at reviving his career than Tom does, even though Tom hasn’t hurt anyone. Kinda sad that beating up your girlfriend and making racist rants won’t end your career, but jumping on a couch on Oprah will.
-
R3
It’s a similar situation to Jane Fonda, back in “the day”. I recall my parents would not watch (nor allow us to watch) any of her movies after she her hobnobbing with the Viet Cong and betraying our kids in war camp over there. But she has since apologized, sincerely I think, and I enjoy her movies now. If Mel gets help, and shows contrition somewhere along the way, who knows.
-
To Jon Thomas
Really? After all that has happened you REALLY think he’s not a racist? REALLY! That’s a joke, right? You can’t say that Jews are the cause of all the world’s problems and use the term “pack of ni**ers” and NOT be a racist. Are you really that stupid?
-
Taylor
Tom Cruise’s box office has suffered since he went publically weird — but weird and violent are two very different things. Despite his weirdness, Cruise appears to be a harmless guy, and many people in the business are still happy to work with him. I can’t imagine anyone being interested in associating themselves with Mel Gibson right now.
-
Cindy
The man really shouldn’t drink. I just have a hard time reconciling Mel the director of “Passion” (which was a bloody mess but nevertheless expressed his apparently deeply held religious views),with the Mel of these sloppy, angry tirades. Though I’ve enjoyed his movies like Man Without a Face, What Women Want, Braveheart and Patriot, I lost interest when he followed Passion with profanity laced intereviews for Apocalypto. As for Mr.Cruise, he’s still trying to recover from his publicity nightmare, campaigning to show the world how “normal” his life is while publicizing his latest flop with Ms Diaz.
-
Angela
To Julia:
Well, he clearly doesn’t think so. If you find Scientology offensive or whatever, just don’t listen.
-
accuracy
Cruise did not do anything to warrant being included with Gibson – no matter how some try to justify it. Cruise jumped on a sofa proclaiming his love for his woman then criticized Brooke Shields for relying on psychiatry – incidentally, Brooke and Cruise later began friends. You want to lump Gibson with someone, lump him with Michael Richards.
-
Josh
-
Dave
Agreed. I’ve been over him since his his first-publicized racist/anti-Semitic rant in ’05 or ’06. Team Mel Gibson hasn’t received a dime of my money – unless he’s quietly produced something I saw and I was unaware of it – since then. These latest developments only disappoint me further and I hope the guy gets the help that he needs. Otherwise, perhaps some jail time will help him reform.
-
james
realy, the rappers use the n word also profanity and its ok,private lifes of hollywood stars are for people who love gossip, what gibson says or will do I do not care,I have a life,
-
james

I haven’t seen a Mel Gibson movie since The Patriot, which whitewashed another racist who hated women. That said, in Hollywood, there is no such thing as bad publicity. He’ll make MORE money on his next film because of this. The William Morris Agency probably heard he was dropping them so they beat him to it. He has hundreds of millions of dollars from his Passion film, so he can finance his own projects and go from being a hundred-millionaire to a billionaire. Even if he goes to jail, unless it’s for several years, it will just up his box. Not from me, but overall.
-
Brian
I was a huge fan of his early films, but I’ve refused to see a Gibson movie since seeing the homophobic defenestration scene in “Braveheart.” I might have reacted differently if it was historically accurate, but it was simply added (and worse – intended to be humorous!) as a not-so-subtle dig at gays. The man is a disgusting racist, homophobe and religious hypocrite who doesn’t deserve the fans and career he has. I hope this incident takes him down once for all.
-
@Brian
Which scene are you referring to?
-
bubba
“Defenestration” is the act of throwing someone out a window, I don’t thaink that’s what you’re referring to. Impalement, maybe.
-
bubba
Actually, my bad, you are correct. There was defenestration scene with a gay dude.
-
Brian
-
Julia
I wouldn’t watch a movie that he was in and pay for it (theater, rental) just for the same reason I won’t go to see Tom Cruise films. I find him just too wierd, too violent as an individual to watch him as an entertainer.
If he were producing a film, or directing, would I boycott it? Probably not, but I wouldn’t rush out to see anything he was directing or producing. It’s a shame – I enjoyed many of his movies (especially The Patriot) but it seems he’s a pretty awful person with some pretty awful views.
Would you feel the same about someone who was involved with the KKK or another racist organization?
-
To Julia
Tom Cruise is “too violent”? What act of violence has he ever been known to commit? You’re overreaching here.
-
Amy
He jumped on a couch. Why is that such a bad thing? Yes, it’s a little weird and I’m sure it was awkward to watch, but beyond that, I don’t get why people are so upset about that.
-
Linda
I haven’t watched his movies since he made anti-semetic remarks just like I stopped watching Tom Cruise movies after his comments aoburt Brooke Shields and anti-depressents. It does’t matter if tapes were edited or he was set up. He said what he said..and he did say them. Edited or not.
-
To Julia
-
Anna
I definitely don’t think what he did was right, but leave room for the possibility that he was baited to go off on those tapes. You’re hearing ONE side…no one here could make a clear decision based on ONE side. And his former wife didn’t have these problems from him, which tells you that the newest baby mama might have had issues we’re not seeing! And if she were shaking MY baby like a ragdoll, she’d be lucky all she lost was a piece of a tooth!
-
kevin
wait…. you think there could be another side to screaming at your wife calling her a whore and saying shed get r*aped by a pack of Ni–ers?
seriously? are you that dumb?
-
Jen
You can’t know for sure that his former wife didn’t suffer abuse. MANY women suffer for YEARS with absolutely no one knowing anything about it. For all we know, she is keeping her mouth shut for the sake of her children. We just don’t know.
-
kevin
-
cg
Hurt him at the box office? I think his “work’ goes straight to video already!
-

Oh please…what do you expect from some old, insecure guy that bought himself a trophy girlfriend and can’t get it up anymore to please her. Of course he’s going to be angry and take it out on her. This guy can buy any one of millions of hot little tomatoes. But if you can’t get it up anymore, that’s going to make you a bitter old man. Mel….nobody cares if you freak out on her. We all know you paid for it.
-
Taylor
Gibson is rich and won’t not notice my boycott, but I am not rich, and I don’t want any of my hard-earned cash going into his bank account. I make that choice for myself, not for Gibson or anyone else.

We are all flawed. Let’s stop pretending to be so surprised every time a celeb exposes themself to be a f*ckup, just like the rest of us.
-
merri locke
I agree we are all flawed somewhat, Mel certainly has his problems, but I’d like to hear the conversation from the beginnig to the end, not just the part where he goes crazy. She had to of been saying some things to have gotten him going like that and of course not letting that part of the conversation get leaked! What normal woman is going to keep her mouth shut when being called the names that he used. She was way to cool, like she had wrote down her replies beforehand. I think the most important word for this whole thing is MONEY!!! Remember she has a child by another celebrity who refused to marry her, I know Timothy Dalton has paid a lot of money to her over the years and how much of that money went to cover all of her plastic surgery and boob job? And where was this child and his well being while she was working on Mel. In his ranting he said she went from 33.00 dress to a 12,000.00 dress. She said she made 100,000 a yr. before Mel came along, that dosen’t begin to pay for the life style she lived in California before Mel. Bottom line everyone has to right to like or not like who ever them want, most people are smart enought to keep their mouths shut especially when they have a lot to lose like Mel. I’m bi-racial and I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard my black family members say the N word and the cracker word toward my fathers family and vise versa. As I said we are all flawed! And most of us would like to several million dollars available to us, but how far are you willing to go to get it and at what other persons expense do you want it bad enought! She wanted bad enought to destroy his career.
-
Judy
Wonder what his ex-wife thinks now!!!
-
Regina
Well of COURSE I will pay to see Mel in another movie. He’s my favorite actor. So handsome. I’d pay to watch him wipe his behind! And I hope the rest of you are handling his so-called scandal with the Russian Skank the same way I am: I just block it out. I refuse to listen to any of the so-called “tapes” that exist… I’m sure they’ve all been manufactured somehow. Go Mel! You’re a wonderful person and an admirable Christian man.
-
Alex
I was thinking, I don’t really condone what he does, but there has to be a reason for this. Its not like he did this to his first wife. I don’t think he should have said a lot of the stuff he said, but he does say she “hurt him”, and his constantly calls her a gold digger. Maybe she is. Maybe she is manipulative. She has to be. In one of the tapes he says “I can’t get like this anymore”. I feel bad for him, as crazy as he seems. he says he has no friends
Mel, if you’re reading this, I’ll be your friend. but dont call me a c**t.

You are naive if you don’t see that his girlfriend is a no talent gold-digger who was posturing herself to get some money out of this relationship. That said, Mel is a fool for getting involved with her and a super fool for saying what he said. He needs medical/psychiatric help and she needs to get a real job
-

I agree with Fred. It hasn’t even been confirmed that his voice on the tapes. I enjoy his movies and wouldn’t boycott them.

Yes, yes and yes. I will never spend another dime on anything associated with this scumbag. A shame, because he’s a talented filmmaker.

It’s very hard for me to accept this crazy person as the celebrity I’ve crushed on and whose movies I’ve loved since I was 18 and first saw him in The Bounty. Just goes to show that the public persona and the private person can sometimes be totally different. I will still watch the movies he’s done in the past (Braveheart is my favorite movie of all time) but I won’t support any new stuff he does. My conscience won’t allow it. What a damn shame!!
-
Kim
-
harry
I will support the art not the man. he has proven to come out with some watchable products and most of them I have enjoyed.
-
Quirky
I’m with harry, but I also think it depends on the role. Mel Gibson seems to be a dispicable human being but it won’t stop me from watching favorite films like Braveheart and Signs. However, watching him as a former priest in Signs may be a little tougher now, but watching him as a crazed Scottish warrior savagely cutting through tons of people is probably a little easier to believe now. And Mad Max movies make a lot more sense now too.
-
adam
^^ Wow this is a stupid statement. Supporting his “art” is directly supporting him
-
ScrantonBeetFarmer007
I’ll treat him the way I treat Roman Polanski: I’ll feel absolutely no remorse when I illegally download his movies onto my computer for free.
-
bill
ms. schwarzbaum,
you know very well, as it is your bread and butter, that people don’t simply take in a hollywood performer’s work… you know that there is a process of idolization/deification of the artist/director. and that your magazine contributes to that process, as well as many others. so this notion that audiences shouldn’t be emotionally attached to the performer is antithetical to the hollywood machine, of which your magazine is a key coronating part. -
sb1719
That is not completely true, and maybe you’re the one with the stupid statement. I can completely admire and love a peace of art, but not necessarily the artist. Respecting a piece of work does not mean I have to agree with everything the maker of it does or thinks in their life. Have a mind of your own, seriously!
-
Michael
No, Adam, yours is the stupid statement. Once an artist creates a piece of art, for the most part, that piece of art stands alone. It makes a statement and can be judged separately (to an extent) from the artist. That is not to say that it is complete void of any connection with the artist, as obviously he or she is the one who created it, but it certainly does possess merit for its own sake, which can be judged, liked or disliked, and simply just seen on its own ground. Therefore, one such as myself can wholly disapprove of Mel’s violent behavior, racist and homophobic comments he has made in the past, misogyny, and other wrongs. Those actions are clearly wrong, and he will suffer the consequences whether the public sees that or not. BUT, all of that does not take away from his art, which it cannot be denied, has substantial worth. Signs, What Women Want (ironically titled in light of recent events), The Patriot, Pocahontas, Payback, the Lethal Weapon series, Conspiracy Theory, Ransom, Braveheart, Mad Max, Apocalypto, The Passion of the Christ, and others were all (in varying degrees of course), good and sometimes great pieces of art. And the fact is they will and do stand the test of time. And furthermore, films in particular (as opposed to other art forms) require a vast number of people to produce and create, therefore, by immediately discrediting them all simply because someone intricately involved in their making has done heinous acts, is to discredit the entire rest of the cast and crew who brought those films together, to the screen, for the public’s entertainment. Overall, I think there is just a whole lot more to think about and consider in this whole situation than a simple yes/no dismissal of the man and his work.
-
doug
Movies aren’t paintings. They are collaborative works involving hundreds of other people.
Saying you boycott Mel is effectively saying you boycott every writer, producer, actor, cinematographer, lighting and sound technician, etc. that has ever worked on a movie he was involved in. Hell, it even indirectly affects teenagers selling popcorn in the theatres. I just don’t understand that.
-
bill
guys, that’s esoteric theoretical nonsense. don’t know what planet you’re living on where you think moviegoers are going to separate mel gibson’s psychotic rants from his character’s trademark anger. they won’t see his onscreen rage as cool anymore, but rather as real and sadistic. besides, people naturally don’t want to give their money over to support the career of a guy who repulses them. when’s the last time a mass audience embraced “triumph of the will” simply because it’s artistic? give it up. he f*ked himself.
-
Deanna
That is true, actually. Supporting his ‘art’ is supporting him, keeping him a rich, smug douchebag.

I don’t find it difficult to separate a person’s art from their misdemeanours, as anyone with half a brain can do quite eaily. However, Gibson never makes movies I want to see so the question is irrelevent for me.

Actors get to choose what movies they work on. I am suspect of anything “a racist, a bigot, a misogynist, a person unraveling in hate” deems a “good project”.

People in real life or t.v. throwing words around either as a joke or during an agument, words such as thieving jews, white trash, crackers, gays, and faggots. Use the N word and all hell breaks loose.

I don’t know who you hang out with but my friends don’t throw around ‘thieving jews, faggots (actually hard for me to type)’ etc, as jokes and especially not in arguments. I could be sloppy drunk and you wouldn’t hear me say the things Mel Gibson said.

didn’t really care about him before and i don’t really care about him now. the last movie i saw of his was Passion of the Christ and that movie scared me so much!! the only movie we own is The Patriot, but not because of him, just because it is a good movie.
-
Matt
The Patriot sucks – another Gibson movie that distorts history to suit am overly sentimental story.
-

i think i just like it because of the costars(Heath Ledger, Tom Wilkinson, Draco Malfoy’s dad, and Joely Richardson) I don’t really care about the whole plot, i just like the supporting roles!

I like the roles he plays and fair amount of the films he’s made in his career. Never mattered to me what he does or says on his own time. Sure, he’s said crazy stuff, but I don’t think saying the N-word is the same as being racist. Referencing a racial stereo-type in a tirade of dialog meant to hurt or break someone isn’t proof of nothing except the fact that this guy has anger management issues. Now, that doesn’t mean he isn’t racist either… I just don’t buy it.
If he has physically abused this woman or others, then please lock him up. If not, let this nonsense play out, let the guy get help, and let me enjoy what he can make of the little career he has left.

Ah, I remember q time– let’s call it the Pre-Michael Richards America– when yelling the N-word was enough to be considered racist. I guess in a Post-Obama era, people need more proof.

I remember “a” time

Sorry MF, a tirade (for whatever reason) brings the true personality to light. That he would say these things in *any* setting shows what’s deep in his psyche. When I argue with someone, no matter how angry I might be, race never comes up – ever.
-
Julia
Completely agree.
-
Sue
Agreed. I’ve been as angry as all get out but have never gone racial. There’s plenty of generic, effective profanity out there to chose from without going racial.

MelFan – what you say when you’re drunk and/or angry reveals your true self. Nobody I know, (of any race) says things like that when they’re enraged and/or drunk. It’s who he really is, which is too bad. Now, Michael Richards targeted individuals who had hurt his feelings, with something he thought would hurt them. I’m not sure he’s racist; just immmature.
-
Wickeddoll
Sure the posts show NOW Sorry about that – they didn’t show when I first posted

@melfan: You make some great points. At the end of the day, everyone has a default setting that we fall into when we are under extreme stress. Mel clearly feels the need to dehumanize people verbally when he believes he is under attack. What lengths would anyone go to, to defend themselves? I would like to think that if I was pushed to the brink, I wouldn’t be violent, but I really don’t know. As far as I am concerned, he has lost everything that matters…his wife, his family, and his faith. He has sunk into this moral black hole of his own doing. Everyone deserves a chance at redemption. At the same time, if it is determined that laws have been broken, Mel needs to pay the price.
-
Wickeddoll
Mel has had other chances at redemption and rejected them. For his, and his children’s sake, I hope he can be pulled from the brink – but as to any new projects of his, he’s dead to me. I can’t even look at him anymore.

You are an idiot. What does make him a racist? His anti semetic comments? No? What does he have to do to prove it to you, the one remaining true blue Mel moron.
-
Amy
Agreed. Maybe his use of the n-word hints at racist tendencies, but that in and of itself isn’t necessarily racist. It’s like using words like retarded or homo, etc. They often aren’t purposely used to offend a certain group of people; they’re used because just like ‘idiot’ or ‘stupid’ because they’re insults that have managed to become common.
-
susie
He did not just use the “N” word…
He said she will be raped by a pack of n….That goes way beyond just using the “N” word, as dispicible as it is on its own. -
Rod
@MelFan, I am not at all a Mel fan yet I agree with you. Tiger Woods is famous for golf not who he is intimate with. Gibson is famous for his work in the movie industry, not who he screams at or his anger management. These celebrities are not of the calibre of the Lindsay Lohans and Paris Hiltons, these are true professionalin a certain field, they are not in it for celebrity. If you lost your job because you called your girlfriend a b***h or cheated on your wife, it would make you pretty upset and you would think it is an inappropriate consequence to your actions.

I will because whose to say this is true? I like his movies I don’t have to like him, plus I’m waiting for Braveheart 2!
-
Wickeddoll
“Who’s to say this is true”? He is – he hasn’t denied any of the taped stuff, yet he denies knocking her teeth out. Don’t get me wrong, I think she set him up, but he shouldn’t have been “set-up-able”. He must have said/done thoese things in the past, or she wouldn’t have known he’d do it again.
-
fish eye no miko
“but he shouldn’ for tht have been ‘set-up-able’.”
THANK YOU!
I’m so annoyed with the people who claim that she’s to blame for this by taping him for money, or riling him up or whatever. Even if that’s true, he still said the words of his own free will!
-

She probably did set him up. I would do the same exact thing. He is owed no respect, and its clear this wasn’t an isolated event, as you noted Wickeddoll, because she wouldn’t have been ready with a tape otherwise.

The only reason I don’t buy tickets for his movies is because his movies suck, not because he’s a huge vagina.
-

Actually, he’s more of a huge dick. Vagina is more of a compliment than the skeezeball deserves.

I agree, vagina is awesome. He is a DiK.

his movies earn millions, what do u earn,it appears u r the one who sucks
-

@james… So a person’s value should be based solely on how much money they make? What a lovely sentiment!
-
@ james the idiot
When did his last movie earn millions?? (Over the cost of producing it). How much do you earn that makes you worship turds that have $?
-
susie
You are an absolute idiot. You think people are jealous of him and that is why they are trashing him here. I don’t think there is a single person on here that is the least jealous of him. How much money he is worth means nothing when he such a horrible person. I would rather be dirt poor than have the mentality of mel gibson.
-
Rod
Why care about celebrities enough to be on this website posting? Because they have money and live a “fairytale” supposedly. Now through these types of incidents that happen to them you can get rid of your bitterness by justifying that your life is better than theirs because you don’t need anger management! By the way if saying the N word makes you racist then I have to admit I am racist (used it once) and black people definitely hate themselves because they use it all the time!

If a movie looks good, I’ll watch it. If a song sounds good, I’ll listen to it. If a book seems interesting, I’ll read it. Because while I’m watching, listening or reading, I’m thinking about the art, not the personality flaws of the artist.
-
lianna0048
That’s hard to do. it really is. One of the reasons I don’t see Sean Penn movies is because I don’t support how he snubbed his wife at the Oscars, and I think Penn’s better acting days were done before the Oscar.
-
OMGq
SERIOUSLY? Because he didn’t mention his wife you snub him? What about Hillary Swank – snub her too? Good lord – get a life. I can see snubbing Mel – I listened to the tapes and he seems completely off his rocker – and nobody ever deserves to have their teeth smashed in. But forgetting to mention your spouse at something like the Academy Awards – give me a break.

I have to agree that with all of the excitement of winning a major award, I may forget *my* name. LOL

Some private behavior can be ignored for the sake of someone’s public work. But Mel Gibson has gone too far down the dark road, and if he’s done anything criminal, he should get punished accordingly. He will not be getting one more penny from this former fan.
-

Normally I don’t let an actor or musician’s personal life affect whether or not I see their movies/listen to their music, but I draw the line at domestic and sexual abuse. We need to be clear that such behavior ISN’T okay in any sense, and one way to do that is not reward the abusers.
-
gotopinion
I agree with everything you said. I was married to a man like him and it was like living in HELL. There is no excuse for an abusive man. Also, don’t really like his movies!

I decided after his drunk driving tirade that I wouldn’t see any more of his films. I will not intentionally put money in the pocket of someone with such a long history of bigotry (see his early homophobic remarks during the Braveheart days). If enough people decide we don’t want to reward racist, homophobic, violent misogynist with our money maybe he won’t be cast anymore and the people in hollywood will decide not to work with him (as his public relations agency did who just dumped him)
-

Sounds like mel has no fear of the sissy americans who cry about everything he speaks his mind and as a american ill defend his right to do so till death so all you cry baby sissy’s go suckle your moms tit
-
Sarah
I defend his right to say stupid, ignorant, racist, misogynistic things – I just refuse to support or put money in the pocket of someone who is a hypocrite and a disgusting human being. As an American, it is my right to do so. I don’t think it makes me a “cry baby sissy” – I think it means I have taste.
-
OMGq
I’m with Sarah – he can say whatever he wants – just like I can spend money on anything I want. Thankfully his movies aren’t a draw for me – I think the only ones I’ve seen are Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 and What Women Want. Otherwise I’ve always thought he was a HUGE d-bag and I’m just not interested.

He got dumped by the biggest talent agency in the world – who hasn’t heard of William Morris Agency? That’s gotta be the kiss of death for his appearing in anything other than his own projects.

Very well stated!

I will continue to follow his career precisely because he is a despicable racist with severe psychiatric issues. One doesn’t have to agree with or condone an artist’s worldview in order to appreciate their art (see the child rapist Polanski’s classic early features, see Gucci Mane, etc.) Gibson’s martyr complex and his obsession with brutality are fascinating to me, all the more so because he is so clearly unhinged in real life. These new tapes have confirmed what most of us assumed all along: that the maker of ‘The Passion’ had to be some sort of sadistic macho nutcase. Captivating! That said, I don’t think he’s made a worthwhile film since Lethal Weapon 4.
As for Whoopi Goldberg, we should remember her blackface incident with Ted Danson (not to mention, as someone said above, the time she said what Polanski did wasn’t ‘rape-rape’) before we consider anything she has to say about race.

Mel Gibson: Despicable he, but will his behavior keep you from buying a ticket to his movies in the future?
The truth is, I wish I didn’t know anything at all about Mel Gibson. Nothing. Lucky for me, the man has no effect on my daily existence, and I make no dent in his. I’m curious about Gibson only insofar as he is an interesting actor and filmmaker (“interesting” — how’s that for a deliberately neutral term?) whose projects suggest a complicated, angry interior that, in turn, makes his projects so…interesting. (I assume you enjoy dabbling in cheap, dime-store psychoanalysis as part of your moviegoing enjoyment as much as I do.) The public Mel Gibson’s movies tell me plenty.
In a piece on her website The Daily Beast, Tina Brown declares that ours is a “culture of destructive transparency.” Then she applauds the release of those tapes, arguing that listening in provides a kind of vindication on behalf of “every frightened woman…living in fear of a man who has all the financial cards.” My question: How? Do you really benefit from knowing that, if this leaked evidence is to be believed, the private Mel Gibson is a racist, a bigot, a misogynist, a person unraveling in hate? His sins (to put his actions in terms that he, a religious man, would understand) certainly matter to his unfortunate ex-girlfriend, to anyone he has insulted in person, and to his God.
But to put the matter in terms the godless marketplace understands, will what you know affect whether you buy a ticket to Mel Gibson’s next movie? Will you boycott his work? (I won’t.) Or will you be even more curious to see what he does next? His talent agency just announced that he has been dropped as a client. But he is a very rich man, with money enough to finance his own productions. What should our public response be to Mel Gibson’s private bad behavior?
