Mel Gibson: Despicable he, but will his behavior keep you from buying a ticket to his movies in the future?

“As long as he makes good movies, I will watch” That’s the mentality of a very screwed up America. Actors are God’s to some idiots, unfortunately.

  • Sidney Bayer

    I feel sorry for him.
He is so ill informed about everything that’s right.
His antisemitic beliefs are one of them not to mention his attitude towards woman.
It’s a shame that someone with so much talent has to be so wrong.
He portrayed some great heroes on the screen you might think he might try to emulate at least one of them.
    Such a waste!

I’m usually pretty good at seperating an actor from their character but I just find Mel so disgusting I’m not sure if I can.

  • Sven Godard

I was a fan of his in the 80′s, and the personal struggles of the stars rarely matter to me, but in light of these developments I will most certainly never contribute another single red cent to any work involving Mel Gibson. The man is obviously a drunken mess of a deranged and sick bastard. I hope Oxsana takes his ass to the f***ing cleaners in court.

  • Kyle Butler

well everyone who now hates mel, how do you all feel about roman polanski?

    • jules

      He’s a sick f*ck, too.

    • Shatka

He’s close to death, it’ll take care of itself.

    • caryn

Way worse than Mel and I can’t believe there are people that support him. Not just people that are willing to watch his movies (to each his own) but people that defend him and don’t think he should/should have served jail time.

  • halfpint

the problem is that as an actor, it is nearly impossible to separate the person from the performance at at this point.

  • JPX

I think Mel’s through. Racism + spousal abuse is unacceptable. Personally I won’t ever see another one of his movies. There’s the “judge the art, not the artist” stance but in Mel’s case, every time I see him I will see only a digusting human being.

  • maxer999

Mels popularity jumped big time. from a local madmax to holywood status symbol. who gives a sh^^ about his personal life. I notice whoopi jumped out to stand up for him. Of course that the View…. The other chic is standing up for Poloski …or is that polosy or is that

    • erin

Do you have some kind of palsy? Or are you just trying reeeealy hard to spell “Polanski”?
In answer to your eloquently-worded question about who cares about his personal life? A lot of people. In fact, most people. There’s a big difference between having a slightly unsavory personal life and being a racist, anti-semetic, sexist, violent psycho.

“How? Do you really benefit from knowing that, if this leaked evidence is to be believed, the private Mel Gibson is a racist, a bigot, a misogynist, a person unraveling in hate?”

I had to read this many times to understand what you’re trying to say. *We the public* are not the ones benefitting from the leaked evidence of Mel Gibson’s abuse; it is for the benefit of all abused women/partners. It shows that abusive people can be caught, can be punished, and can be made an example of. Further, if Gibson is boycotted because of his actions (and that’s a huge “if” I admit), then that shows the rest of society that abusers will not be tolerated. It strikes me as arrogant that you attempt to brush this alleged evidence off because it doesn’t serve you as a critic.

Mel Gibson makes me uncomfortable. This article is skeeving me out almost as much as he does.

    • Lindsay

You just said everything I thought when I read that horrid article, yet more articulately than I would have.

I wish I could bold this sentence and stick it above the beginning of the article:

“It shows that abusive people can be caught, can be punished, and can be made an example of. Further, if Gibson is boycotted because of his actions (and that’s a huge “if” I admit), then that shows the rest of society that abusers will not be tolerated.”

    • Amy

I agree with Lisa. No, we shouldn’t condone abuse, but I don’t see how the leaked ‘evidence’ would help abused women/partners. What would knowing that Mel Gibson or any celebrity is a racist or bigot do? There will be racists, bigots, etc. in society regardless of what celebrities do. Knowing that certain behavior isn’t tolerated doesn’t stop it from happening.

  • maxer999

Mel came from Mad Max. Mad max came from his background. Let his personal life be just that. Whoopi loves him. Of cours the rest of the Veiw love Polosky, polsky, posheky and smellmysky.

    • jules

      huh?

  • Bigotbigot

If people are not punished for their wrong-doing, they will continue to think it is fine to continue their bad behavior. It is simply not OK to ignore blatant racism, misogyny, homophobia, and violence in anyone whether it is a friend, associate, or a famous movie star who was raised by a man who is a Holocaust-denyer. I feel badly for people like Jodie Foster who have been duped and have supported him in the past. When people ignore violence and hatred, whether it is considered criminal or not, they are simply supporting that violence and hatred and saying it is acceptable. I haven’t seen a movie of Gibson’s, even though I used to be a fan, since his antisemitic tirade to police and content in The Passion.

  • JKS

Lisa, it’s a bit ridiculous for you to point out that you won’t boycott his work. First, your job pays you to see movies. You can’t say you will boycott a film on “moral grounds”; you wouldn’t be watching too many if that was the case. Secondly, when was the last time you paid to see a film? To answer your question, I seperate art from the artist, but I haven’t seen a Mel Gibson movie in years because I don’t really like any of them, so I guess it’s a moot point?

  • California

He kind of ruined it for me. I really liked What Women Want, and it was on tv the other day. Unfortunately, he has gotten to the point where I just see Mel Gibson on the screen and I could not really enjoy the movie at all anymore. Tom Cruise has created this problem for me too. For the most part though, I am pretty good at separating the gossip from the screen. Angelina, Brad, George clooney, Julia Roberts, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Gardner, Gwen Paltrow, Kate Hudson … all of these people are all over all of the mags and the crap (People, US Weekly, Star) but I can still suspend belief and watch them in movies enjoyably. Even crazy Lohan, sure I think aw what a shame she isn’t making such good movies anymore when I watch her stuff but her name won’t keep me from paying to see a movie. Cruise and Gibson do.

    • JPX

I agree, I can’t watch Tom Cruise anymore because all I see is a lunatic.

      • Shatka

Creepy. The Tom is creepy. He’ll be around these pages with his own little Mental Meltdown before long. I don’t know what it is, he nauseates me. Truly. Eww. Wonder why that is. Wouldn’t walk across the street to……

      • Amy

I think he seems perfectly normal.

    • xyz

I think something is more wrong with YOU guys that you’ll put Tom at Mel’s level. You don’t have to personally like him, but name one thing he has done that has really hurt someone like Mel has. Self-destructive Lindsay is easier for you to swallow than someone who’s in control of themselves and has religious beliefs that you don’t agree with? Nah, I don’t think Tom is the lunatic here…

      • California

I never said I disagree with Tom or Mel’s religious beliefs. I said that I can no longer disengage and suspend belief while watching them on screen. The entire way Tom Cruise carries himself these days is crazy; it’s in his eyes. Not to mention the erratic behavior during interviews. Lindsey Lohan parties a lot … at one point so did Drew Berrymore, and so did Robert Downey Jr. Not knowing when to say when is a lot different then spewing hate and acting like a lunatic who has lost his marbles. Tom Cruise is a lunatic in my book not because of his religion but because of his behavior. John Travolta and his family and Kristi Alley are all Scientologists and I could care less.

  • charmuse

I was through with him after “Passion”. His anti-semetic, sexist drunk driving arrest only galvanized my postion. The fact that he is also a racist and a rage spewing woman hater should come as no surprise to anyone. I can forgive many things about an artist because I enjoy their work, but he has become too vile to consider giving him one cent of my entertain ment dollar.

  • bert

nope. . this piece of garbage gets not another cent from me.

    ever.
