Joaquin Phoenix doc gets a buyer; will open Sept. 10

It’s official. You will now be able to see Joaquin Phoenix’s crazy year of living on the edge and decide for yourself whether or not it’s a grand hoax. Magnolia Pictures has finally confirmed what we reported in June. The indie distribution company has acquired world rights to Casey Affleck’s directorial debut I’m Still Here, the documentary that chronicles Joaquin Phoenix’s tumultuous year-long quest to become a hip-hop musician.

Magnolia Pictures, owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner, will release the controversial film on Sept. 10.

In a press release, the company describes the film as, “sometimes funny, sometimes shocking and always riveting, the film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads. Defying expectations, it deftly explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.”

I liked this concept the first time when it was called Borat. This is just stupid.

    • D

Let me get this straight, you know nothing about this film other what is stated above and say it’s like Borat? How could you possibly know this about this film?

    • Mathieu

Yes, because Borat invented the mockumentary, didn’t it? Sheesh…

      • molly montgomery

What no, This is Spinal Tap invented the mockumentary..just pointing out. I dont understand what this movie is supposed to be…I guess I’ll just have to see it for myself, reluctantly

      • Chris Wollman

        1. He was being sarcastic.
        2. Actually, Woody Allen’s Take the Money and Run was a mockumentary. Not saying he invented it, just that it was before Spinal Tap. I believe the word you’re looking for is “popularized.”

      • Jasper6262

The first mockumentary may actually have been “The Ruttles”. A brilliant send-up of the Beatles with a great bit/cameo by George Harrison. (The late great).

  • UncleWalty

    who gives a sh*t?

    • D

Why comment if you don’t care?

      • 12bdown

        Totally agree with you D…

    • Dave

And who gives a sh*t what you don’t like? Answer: not even yo mama!

      • dee

Gee, some nastiness on this board.

Think it’s perfectly fair on occasion to simply ask, who gives a sh-t — like if they were running umpteen stories on Paris Hilton, wouldn’t it be appropriate to post the same? sounds like a lot of people like to blow off steam on comment boards.

        Stay classy Dave

Look where music is going today. There is no more ROCK music. Hip Hop, specifically, RAP, is now the most popular music. All the collaborations creating this trend is due to the target audience and iTunes. SInce people don’t have to buy albums anymore, why not make random songs with random people who are money makers? Lil Wayne and Eminem are all over the place collobarating with everyone. Jay-Z has been doing it for years. I truly don’t think this is a hoax. Joaquin wants to change his musical preference and express himself the way our society is moving.

    • Nicole

@ VisualFiction: Clearly you have never heard any respectable underground hip-hop because you are completely ignorant to the genre. I don’t think Joaquin is a hoax either but why did he choose to do it in such an odd way? If he is serious about a music career, why did he appear to go off the deep end to do it? Those are the questions people want answered. How he went from playing John Cash to trying out RAP is beyond me…

      • momo

        underground hip hop sucks to.

  • Nicole

And there is plenty of new “ROCK” music to discover. Indie Rock is everywhere, look beyond the mainstream genres and you’ll find plenty of good music.

    • momo

      underground rock sucks to.

      • BobOnLSD

Yeah, and I don’t like liver or peas.

      • Katdawg

        You’ve never heard any.

  • Chaz Winterbottom

Is this film really being considered controversial?

What’s controversial about acting like a douche nozzle for a year and getting your buddy to film it?

    Sounds like Youtube to me.

    • sandy

It’s controversial because it supposedly shows him doing coke and picking up prostitutes or something. There may be more, that’s just what I heard about it.

      • Chaz Winterbottom

Great. So it’s two hours of Jo Pho playing a game of “made ya look”. Sweet.

    • ew.com

One of the scenes shows Joaquin passed out, and one of his friends taking a dump on his forehead.

      • american abroad

Is there another scene showing him being tested for Hepatitis-C?

  • Maria

Pathetic Andy Kaufman wannabe. If Joaquin wanted to successfully sell that idea, he should’ve at least stuck to his persona 24/7 to make it BELIEVABLE. And this idiot was once nominated for an Academy Award? No wonder people have zero respect for these award shows…

    • Rishi

With all due respect Maria I feel we should separate personal life from work. Phoenix has acted very crazily and I don’t approve of it but besides from this controversy, Phoenix was a brilliant actor. Watch him in Walk the Line or Gladiator or Quills. He was stunning at his craft and was very deserving of those two oscar nominations and it is sad he has become so eccentric.

  • lin

Does anyone even care? Seriously, I have absolutely no desire to watch this stupid crap. It’s pointless. No one gives a crap anymore.

    • RR

“Seriously” I want to see it. Stop stating your opinion as fact, stupid!

  • Dicazi

It was an act. I saw him on Letterman and Letterman said something sarcastic and Phoenix ALMOST broke character and laughed. Hope it was worth it.

    • filmboy

True. At the end of that interview Phoenix turns away from the camera and takes of his glasses when he shakes Letterman’s hand.

  • Darren

They should just release this on 9/11 That would make more sense.

    • A

Why would that make more sense- a disasterous lifestyle on a date of a disasterous tragedy? The terrorist attack nine years ago has nothing at all to do with this. I kind of wish people didn’t refer to that event by the date. Oh well.

  • Albert

    wow.

    really?

  • Mary

This guy was already a well respected actor. Why he decided to make a mockumentary is beyond me. He should have still been making movies for the past two years. I mean, it would’ve been one thing if he were still in his 20′s, but this guy is well into his mid-30′s! Joaquin, I really like you, but it’s time to grow up, man.

  • DLM

The Letterman interview was a hoax. Go back and watch Dave. You can tell he is going off a script that was given to him. I

  • Amelia

There is real ROCK. Check out Lloyd’s Garage at their website lloydsgarage.com. They rock, no joke.

    • LuLu1231

I checked them out and lovin’ ‘em.
I see Lloyd’s Garage is playing at the X Fest in Modesto on August 7th. Dare I brave the heat? Yes.

  • Joe

underground rap has not existed sense the ninties. Underground in nature incurs that there is an above ground or in view of the public. Now there are only different genres with different levels of visibility thanks to the internet.

In reality there will never a be a true under ground scene again because anyone can access what ever artist they want through the internet or other avenues. But in reality these labels are all about Americas juvenile obsession with appearances and what is “cool” currently. Believe it or not there was a time when Outkast was “underground”.

    • Joe

I said incur but meant infers, sorry.

  • joedoe

Joaquin Phoenix is not acting. He really is a moron
