'Other Guys' scores Friday; 'Step Up 3D' stumbles

Tags: ,

the-other-guysImage Credit: Macall PolayWill Ferrell is back and audiences are loving it. The Saturday Night Live alum’s pairing with Mark Wahlberg has proved to be a very successful combination, as The Other Guys scores a $13 million Friday, knocking Inception off the top spot for the first time in four weeks. The PG-13 buddy comedy directed by Adam McKay could reap $35-$36 million over the weekend, marking Ferrell’s second highest-grossing opening ever behind Talladega Nights in 2006.

Inception continues its incredible run, dropping only 31 percent from last Friday for another $5 million and a likely weekend take of $19 million. Launching the third iteration of Step Up in 3-D did little to boost the franchise. With a bit over $6 million on Friday, the Disney release is not expected to make much more than $16 million over the three-day frame, less than its last two predecessors.

Spot four is looking like a three-way race between Salt, Despicable Me, and Dinner for Schmucks. All three earned around $3.3 million on Friday night for a weekend that will be in the $10 million range. It seems Schmucks was the one movie hit the hardest by The Other Guys, down some 59 percent from its opening weekend.

Check back tomorrow for full results.

Well step up isn’t playing in 3d anywhere near me

    • Phil

I live in Philly and I am actually going to see it later this afternoon with a friend, but I noticed its not in that many 3D theaters…dunno if that was cause of CATS & DOGS, or if they expected to roll it out in fewer 3D theaters & then expand…

  • Larry

The dancing sequences were intense in Step Up 3D -it’s hands down the best movie of its genre I’ve seen.

    • Madelaine

I agree the dancing was awesome, and the 3-D was better than most because they were filmed in 3-D like Avatar, not added in later.

  • Adam

What, you mean wave after wave of people aren’t racing to theaters to spend an extra four bucks to see the third entry in a dance series in 3D?! Here’s a news flash, Hollywood studios: moviegoers won’t rush out to see any crap flick just because you make it 3D. Sure, “Avatar” was a huge hit, but that was a 15-years-in-the-works, nine-figure-budget epic by event-film legend James Cameron. Just because people went to see THAT doesn’t mean they want to go out and pay extra to see everything in 3D from now on! Sorry if this puts a crimp in your money-gouging plans. Now you might actually have to pull in moviegoers the hard way… by making good movies (the 2D-only “Inception” seems to be doing just fine, you’ll notice!)

    • Mike

      Right on, Adam!

      • Imran

Well put. We’re onto you, Hollywood!

      • etm

Agree! In fact, the very title “Step Up 3D” gives me douche chills.

    • Otis

Totally agree with you Adam. I do NOT go to a movie because it is in 3D. I select to spend my hard earned entertainment budget on movies with great scripts… I also don’t care who stars in a movie. Don’t know about the rest of you, but I take a solid screenplay of some overpaid actor getting top billing.

    • Woot

To true. Even though I didn’t enjoy Avatar, it’s the only film I’ve seen so far where I didn’t care if I was paying the extra money for 3D.

    • stella

      This.

    • John Leyton

      Definitely, i agree!!!

  • Sean S.

After How To Train Your Dragon and Avatar, Step Up 3D is probably be the best 3D film to come out. While the plot and acting is fairly weak (as in all of the Step Up films), the 3D dance sequences are quite stunning visually. I would recommend it to fans of the genre or of 3D, in general.

    • Rich

How about fans of well-written, well-acted cinema? Not so much??

    • Andy

Um, Toy Story 3 was in 3D as well…

  • Allan

I could count on one hand how many black people I saw in stepup3D.shame whitewashing at its best

    • Desmo

      This post is ridiculous.

      • Allan

        No man its real.Whitewashing

      • Desmo

        Your a racist.

      • Jamal

The producers were racist for not using more black actors. Everybody knows blacks are the best dancers.

      • Allan

lol at me being racist.face the facts its whitewashing and Hollywood loves to do it.

    • Julie

How many fingers do you have?! There’s 6 black people on the main crew.

      • thomas

I AM NOT TRYING TO BASH ANY FILM OR ANYONE….BUT WHEN I HEARDS “STEP UP 3-D”….COME ON…I LOVE THE ART OF DANCE AND THEY DID SOME GREAT STUFF IN THE FIRST TWO….BUT TO PUT IT IN 3-D…COME ON…NEITHER OF THE FIRST TWO WERE MASTERPIECES…BUT THEY WERE GOOD FUN TO WATCH…BUT I DO NOT NEED A FOOT…DURING A DANCE…TO JUMP AT ME…SAVING THE EXTRA BUX AND I WILL SEE IT WHEN IT IS FREE ON ONE OF THE PAY PER VIEW CHANNELS I CURRENTLY PAY FOR…AGAIN JUST MY THOUGHTS….STEP-UP 3-D….CRACKS ME UP!

      • the king

hahahahaha…so theres 6??…well i guess that makes it alright now…hahahahahahahahah…man that was funny…hahahahaha…when you can count the number of black people….its wrong!!…hahahahahaha

  • LOL

No one cares about Step Up. Putting it in 3-D is hilarious.

    • Phil

Are you the same poster who CONSTANTLY says WHO CARES ABOUT THIS CRAP on the Tv recaps!? If you really have nothing better than to constantly click on items and say that same line, thben GOD BLESS YA, I wish I had that life to be that miserible & boring while trying to seem like you’re busy being occupied. BRAVO!

      • Devin Faraci

Shut up Phil. Against the first amendment are you?

      • Desmo

Love how you told him to shut up while at the same time criticizing him for “violating” the first amendment. Encore Devin, encore.

      • jo

        Shut up… and dance

    • paul

Do you mean the REAL definition of ‘hilarious’ (REALLY REALLY FUNNY) or the one used by movie reviewers (MADE ME PUKE IN MY MOUTH A LITTLE)??

  • MovieMan

I don’t know why but I’m happy ‘The Other Guys’ did so well. It’s a funny film.

    • PlanBFromOuterSpace

Not to nitpick really (OK, I guess I really, really am), but did you re-read that at all before you posted? You found it funny, but you don’t know why you’re happy it did so well? *sigh*

  • Matt C

Step Up 3D was surprisingly good, and the best use of 3D I’ve seen since Avatar. It’s a shame more people aren’t seeing it, it’s very enjoyable and fun. But I also saw The Other Guys and it was hysterical, so I’m glad it’s successful.

  • Joe Brody

I would take 3d more seriously if they had clip ons. I need my glasses to see clearly.

    • Bryan

well considering i occasionally wear glasses and have had no problem with the 3d glasses over them, you could probably suck it up

  • sil

it because the other guys is an original story

step up 3D is just beating the dead horse.. guy meets girl.. they dance.. something happens so they battle dance and they fall in love at the end.. there! i just saved you $10 and now it wont make anymore money

    • Erin

I’m sorry but The Other Guys is not an original story. Cops acting dumb/silly….never seen that before..

      • ?

        ghslssl

    • Larry

There has been very little in Hollywood these years that is original. The Other Guys is another example of a buddy movie with a comedian and a straightlaced partner. I wouldn’t label that as hardly original.

      • Bryan

neither character is the ‘funny’ one or ‘straight laced’ one. if anything, will ferrel character starts off as the normal one before the backstory unfolds

  • Desmo

I liked The Other Guys but it was so hit and miss that I can’t imagine it will find a large audience.

    • Dave

Did you post your comment before reading the article? It had a very good Friday, and is likely to pull in $35 million over the weekend. Sounds like a fairly large audience to me.

      • PlanBFromOuterSpace

        See also: My comment above.

      • Desmo

Yeah PlanB I did see your comment above and it doesn’t really apply in this situation.

      • PlanBFromOuterSpace

It sorta does, as this article is about it finding a large audience, and then you question whether it will find a large audience. Much as the one guy that can’t understand why a movie he likes is doing well, you’re not looking before you post to see if the information is already there.

      • PlanBFromOuterSpace

Correction: He can’t understand why he LIKES that a movie he likes is doing well. I assure you, I just gave myself a slap on the wrist for that one.

      • Erin

PlanB your previous post doesn’t really apply to Desmo. Sorta, maybe.
The condescending attitude to look if to see something is posted already is annoying, especially when your post “sorta” applies.

    • Desmo

I did read the article but thank you for the condescending post. The movie did have it’s funny points but for the most part it was a very quirky film that in MY opinion doesn’t play well with mainstream audiences. Also just because it is going to do well this week, doesn’t mean it will do as well next week. For all you know it’s numbers could fall significantly next week after the initial promotion is substituted for actual viewer input.

      • Devin Faraci

Desmo knows nothing about the movie industry or economics.

      • PlanBFromOuterSpace

It’s pretty easy to gauge the performance of these kinds of movies, based on the performance of similar movies or even the performance of the several other Ferrell/McKay collaborations. They’re pretty safe bets. Also, it doesn’t play well with mainstream audiences? Who do you think is making this film successful so far, the art house crowd? I manage a theater, and from what I’ve seen from our audiences, it seems to be playing very well, and the tastes out this way are about as mainstream as it gets.

      • Desmo

Guys chill out it’s just my opinion, no need to consistently point out how wrong I am.

      • Shannon

This is why I only watch Twilight

      • Desmo

Rock on Shannon go with what you like.
