'Scott Pilgrim' vs. 'Eat Pray Love' and more: Owen and Lisa chow down on summer movie moments

Have you ever seen a movie you completely forgot in a week — except for one moment in it, which stayed with you for years? When you think about it, a lot of movies are like that. Lisa and I recently took time out to recall a handful of the movie moments from this summer that we suspect will be sticking in our heads for a very long time. (You know, like that final machete thrust in The Expendables. Or Julia Roberts savoring the perfect plate of Roman pasta in Eat Pray Love.) Of course, some movies are better than others, but what makes a moment memorable has its own mysterious chemistry. Check out our video conversation after the jump, and then tell us about some of your favorite movie moments from this summer.

I am so over Michael Cera’s schtick.

    • Katyo

I know a lot of people feel that way, but I really like Michael Cera. He’s hilarious and I kinda like the geeky vibe anyway. Plus he’s George Michael Bluth! I mean, come on. That has to excuse a lot.

      • etm

Yeah, my husband likes Michael, and doesn’t understand why I find him annoying!

Regarding forgettable movies, I forgot The Grudge as I was watching it, it was so bad.

Wow that was odd. I just wrote an very long comment but after I eklcicd submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyways, just wanted to say great blog!

Rob, this is awesome. Thank you so much by birnging this amazing art to us. I like to ask you something. Did you remember the “it’s a wrap” blog? Man, that blog showed us some amazing pictures too. A lot of behind the scenes. I’m currently studying animation and that was gold to me. But unfortunately, i didn’t save the pictures.I was wondering how could i get those pictures. Do you know the owner of that blog? I will really like to contact him and ask for those pictures. I hope you can help me. Once again, thanks.

So am I. Same in every role.

      • steph

there was a tiny picture of him in the printed EW that reviewed Comic Con where Cera was dressed as Captain America. I thought the picutre was a cartoon, not a real person.

  • Woot

Ugh figures that Owen would have a rager for “The Other Guys” and hate “Inception.”

    • john

He DIDN’T hate Inception, he just thought it wasn’t a fantastic MOVIE, and I happen to agree with him, as enjoyable as it was.

      • Wow

Yeah, I’m currently minoring in film history, majoring in production. I’ve seen that ‘Owen’ personality in dozens of teachers, and there is a reason they’re failures in the industry they critique; they’re over-educated condescending pricks. I’ve seen Inception a few times in theaters, while I had to be dragged to shtick like Avatar once. Strictly on a film-maker critique, Inception is something like a revelation, better than citizen Kane in terms of renovation, but not top 20 greatest or anything like that.

      • Jon

“Wow,” you call people like Owen “condescending pricks,” and then you say “Avatar” is “shtick” and “Inception” “better than ‘Citizen Kane’ in terms of renovation” (not sure you really wanted to use the word “renovation” there). Dude, look in a friggin’ mirror. You have bratty film-school student written all over you. “Inception” doesn’t APPROACH breaking ground with new techniques the way “Kane” did back when it was made. They were doing things with movement and technique no one had ever even considered. What “Kane” did to elevate film-making technique is far beyond what filmmakers today do with digital effects.

      • DarkLayers

Sheesh, Wow that’s pretty absurd. Owen did dislike “Inception.” Even Jeff Jensen noted that Owen wasn’t impressed. Owen said that if someone thought it could be understood, he’s tempted to think they’re dreaming. He might not have hated it, but his opinion wasn’t just, “It isn’t a fantastic movie.” It was clearly mixed-to-unfavorable.

      • DarkLayers

john, Lisa, AO Scott, and Michael Phillips didn’t think “Inception” was fantastic either, but they’re all more favorable in video discussions than Owen. It’s not just that he doesn’t think it’s great.

Woot, “Inception” scores only 10 points higher on metacritic than “The Other Guys.” It’s not at all unacceptable to like one and not the other.

My two moments from the summer: The moment when all of the toys join hands near the end of ‘Toy Story 3′, and the hotel hallway fight in ‘Inception’. The former was the most sad, yet beautiful, moment of any film I saw this summer. The latter was another creative, inventive, and stunningly unique sequence from Christopher Nolan. It reminded me of everyone’s reaction in the theater when he flipped the 18-wheeler in ‘The Dark Knight’.

    • Sadie

      I agree completely.

      • SJ

the toy story 3 moment still resonates with me.

  • Dom Cobb

Ditto to person above me. That moment in TS3 was incredible. The hallway fight was AMAZING in Inception, but I’d say there are tons of great moments in the film. Also Scott Pilgrim was fantastic. Many moments in that film too. Otherwise it’s been a very crappy summer for films.

  • Lee

Can’t wait to see Scott Pilgrim today! BIG fan of the comics!

  • Clete

Am getting a little bit tired of the over-promtion of movies. Ok-Scott Pilgrim is the greatest movie ever made. Give it all the meaningless awards, have every critic in the world rave about it.

“You know, like that final machete thrust in The Expendables.”
Uh… No, we don’t know, because it’s Friday afternoon and nobody but critics has seen the movie yet. : )

  • aj

–Jules’ Speech and the send off at the end of “The Kids Are All Right”
—cheesy but when Edward proposes to Bella in New Moon and she accepts
—The simultaneous kicks back to reality in “Inception”
—The ending of “Toy Story 3″

“Julia Roberts, beyond all her skills as an actress, represents something large and almost ineffable: the woman that a great many women still want to be.”
You know, I usually defend Owen (and Lisa) from their detractors, but this statement is so gross that I’m completely offended and disgusted. God save us all from male film critics who like to tell women what we want to be (and, in the case of Megan Fox, who we’re “jealous” of). Combine this with Owen’s ridiculous “essay” about how “Twilight” says something meaningful about grown women’s lives, and I’m beginning to suspect he’s nothing but a sexist a**hole, which is not something I’ve ever thought before in all these years.
In short: we do NOT all want to be Julia Roberts, so don’t make such an offensive assumption. Just because EW is inexplicably obsessed with her doesn’t mean anyone else is.

    • jcm

      AMEN!!!

    • SJ

Julia is a gem but she can’t save that shallow book with pretty exterior shots and her huge smile.

  • goober

I believe the biggest and most resonating moment in film this summer was the ending of inception I mean its not everyday you get a movie with an ending that keeps you thinking for weeks after you watch it

    • Masato

It is appropriate time to make some plans for the ftuure and it’s time to be happy. I have read this post and if I could I want to suggest you few interesting things or advice. Perhaps you could write next articles referring to this article. I want to read even more things about it!

  • The Other Guy

Good summer movies, good summer movies…

Iron Man 2, Toy Story 3, Inception, Scott Pilgrim, Salt, Knight and Day, The A-Team, Karate Kid…

  • Ali

Eat Pray love…I get the whole life journey thing if you don’t work in a cubical that doesnt permit you to take year long vacas. But Going to Italy to eat…Taco Bell works…India to pray? Pray at the local winery that guy to your left w/bitch tits doesnt get any closer and love…In Bali? Sounds like fun, but why not head somewhere a bit more familiar like your local pub to find a scruffy man w/an accent. All this took a YEAR? I could have accomplished all these things in the time it took me watch the movie. I Don’t get it CHEERS:)
