Robin Wright in negotiations for 'Dragon Tattoo'

Sources confirm to EW that Robin Wright, the 44-year-old actress who is currently filming Moneyball opposite Brad Pitt, is in negotiations for a major role in David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Wright is expected to sign a deal to play the part of Erika Berger, the editor-in-chief of Millennium magazine and long-time lover of protagonist Mikael Blomkvist, who will be played by Daniel Craig. The news was first reported in Deadline Hollywood.

The role, while significant in the first novel, grows in the two subsequent books, and Wright’s deal will include an option on the other two movies. Both CAA and Sony Pictures declined comment on the part. The studio and filmmakers are still in the hunt for their titular Girl, a decision that fans of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium Trilogy” hope they will arrive at shortly.

New Nicholas Sparks novel acquired by Relativity Media

There’s no stopping Nicholas Sparks. The prolific author of more than 15 novels has already made quite a name for himself in the movie world with six films adapted from his novels, including the recent Dear John starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum and the beloved 2004 film The Notebook. Now his next novel Safe Haven, which won’t be published until this fall, has been acquired by Relativity Media, who plans to promote the book when it debuts on September 14 via its online Rogue Network. The studio, along with producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, plan on fast-tracking the movie into production.

Safe Haven centers on a young North Carolina woman, determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships. She begins to fall in love but struggles with a dark secret that haunts and terrifies her.

Sparks’ films, which also include A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe and the upcoming The Lucky One have grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide.

Box office preview: 'Other Guys' targeting the top slot

other-guysImage Credit: Macall PolayThe Other Guys is not likely to open as big as Talladega Nights, but it should be one of Will Ferrell’s top bows of his career. The film will strike deep into last weekend’s comedy Dinner for Schmucks, likely cutting the film’s opening weekend at least in half. But nothing will stop Inception. The film will lose its first-place standing after three weeks, but after crossing $200 million, there is little that can keep Inception from reaching what could be a $300 million gross. The other new wide release, Disney’s Step Up 3D should also have a respectable bow, with young girls the primary target for the film. Read on for my predictions.

1. The Other Guys: $36 million

Opening in 3,650 theaters, The Other Guys should out-gross Step Brothers, the last project from the duo of director Adam McKay and Ferrell, which bowed in summer 2008 to $30 million. Reviews have been solid and audiences seem to enjoy seeing Mark Wahlberg play against type in the comedy. A strong supporting cast of Eva Mendes, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, and Michael Keaton help sell the case too. This film should be a hit for Sony Pictures.

2. Inception: $19 million

Never falling more than 35 percent since it opened in mid-July, Inception has now earned $205 million. Expect it to hit close to $230 after this weekend in theaters, where it will be in second place for this first time since it began its impressive run. READ FULL STORY »

3-D: Where do you stand on it now?

3d-moviesImage Credit: Photodisc/Getty ImagesWhen the history of the current 3-D boom is written, the last couple of weeks may well go down as having marked the early rumblings of a tectonic shift — the moment when the movie industry’s underlying doubts and anxieties about 3-D began to crystallize, for the first time, in a very public way. On Tuesday, a front-page story in The New York TImes put the spotlight on several noteworthy Hollywood filmmakers who have now gone on record to voice their lack of enthusiasm for the 3-D trend. In particular, the story quoted a line that J.J. Abrams dropped at Comic-Con. He said, “When you put the glasses on, everything gets dim.” That’s a very pithy line, a casual condemnation that carries more resonance the more that you think about it. If it were just an off-the-cuff, drive-by remark by a celebrity director that some rude blogger had insisted on posting, that might be one thing, but Abrams, who after last summer’s Star Trek is as potent — and commercially powerful — a purveyor of blockbuster fantasy as anyone now working in Hollywood, knew that his remark was inherently political. He knew that he was speaking as a de facto representative of those in the industry who are 3-D skeptics. When you put the glasses on, everything gets dim. That line has meaning because more than a few people — in the film industry, and in the audience, too — may now feel that way as well. READ FULL STORY »

Davis Guggenheim not directing Justin Bieber concert movie

Justin Bieber’s concert movie/bio pic still needs its director. Paramount Pictures confirmed today that Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim will not be joining the 3-D project. The director of the upcoming Waiting for Superman documentary was a name being considered for the project, but his promotional duties surrounding his film on our nation’s troubled public education system prevents him from focusing on another movie at this time. Guggenheim officially passed on the project last night.

The helmer, whose previous credits include An Inconvenient Truth, was never attached to the project, so it’s unfair to say that he has dropped off it. Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

Paramount and its MTV Films division intends to capture the nation’s Bieber Fever with a Valentine’s Day weekend release next year. The studio is looking at a few different options to helm the project, either two co-directors or one director and a strong producing team. Bieber is producing the project along with his manager Scooter Braun, L.A. Reid, and Usher.

Nicolas Cage back in 'Trespass'

Wow, talk about a rough couple of days for all the crew members of Joel Schumacher’s upcoming thriller Trespass. First, Nicolas Cage bowed out of the movie just weeks before it was to begin production in New Orleans. Then, the actor re-boarded the project, but switched roles for a third time, Millennium Films confirmed today. Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

Originally, Cage was cast in the drama as Nicole Kidman’s husband, but opted to play one of the thieves who terrorizes the couple just weeks before production began. Well now it looks like the veteran actor has flip-flopped one more time, returning to play Kidman’s betrothed. Perhaps the role of the madman, in light of his poor showing in the recent The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, is less appealing to the constantly-working actor? Cameras begin rolling shortly. No word yet on who’s playing the thieves.

'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part Two' hits November 2012

Twilight fans rejoice! Your relationship with this franchise doesn’t have to come to a close for another two years. Summit Entertainment announced today that the final movie in the epic saga will debut on Nov. 16, 2012, one year after Breaking Dawn Part One hits theaters on Nov. 18, 2011.

Will the final installment be in 3-D? Summit says a decision has yet to be made, but sources say director Bill Condon and Co. are opting to NOT go for a third dimension. Many of the Twilight fans have been very vocal regarding their opposition to 3-D, but with the final chapter of the saga focusing on Bella’s life after she’s turned into a vampire, it could be compelling from a story view. And the extra revenue wouldn’t hurt either.

Justin Bieber and Zac Efron: How to market a teen idol -- and how not to

Tags:

beiber-efron-idolsImage Credit: Pamela Littkey; Diyah PeraThe announcement that Justin Bieber, the hip-swiveling Canadian teen-pop sensation who looks like a 12-year-old Hilary Swank in a windswept helmet, would be starring in his very own 3-D biopic, to be released next Valentine’s Day, occasioned shrieks of gratitude (at least, from his fans), along with more than a few chortles and eye rolls. All of that may be deserved. Bieber is now 16 years old, which sort of makes you wonder: Will the first half hour of this movie take place while he’s still in a high chair? To put it mildly, he doesn’t seem to have lived a long enough life to be telling his life story, and the list of biopics that actually star the subjects as themselves is very, very short, and not auspicious. When Muhammad Ali chose to portray himself in The Greatest, back in 1977, even that, coming from one of the most mythological self-promoters of the 20th century, seemed at the time like a rather startlingly blunt act of egotism run amok.

Nevertheless, I have to say: This is an incredibly shrewd move on Bieber’s part. For one thing, he’s a very talented dude, with more personality in his soaring rockin’-bird vocals, and his dance moves, than you’d find in all three Jonas Brothers mashed together. What’s truly savvy about the idea of a Justin Bieber biopic, though, as shameless and calculated an act of marketing as it may be, is that it’s just so damn…in-your-face. It’s Bieber’s way of saying: I’m here. I’m a sizzling commodity. Get used to it. And that’s what a teen idol today has to do to cut through the clutter. He, or she, must seize the focus, force the hot spotlight right onto his talent. I imagine that the Bieber movie will feature a fair amount of performance footage anyway — that the “biopic” aspect may, in fact, be just a way of dressing up a concert film. For the sheer audacity of the announcement, though, I’d have to say that Bieber and his army of handlers have won the week.

The week’s big loser, of course, is Zac Efron, who I treated rather harshly — and I stand by it — in my review of the saccharine, inert dud Charlie St. Cloud. Since I’ve liked Efron, a lot, in all three of the High School Musical films, there’s a reason I beat up on him here. READ FULL STORY »

Nicolas Cage walks off new film 'Trespass'

Millennium Films confirms that venerable actor Nicolas Cage has backed out of Trespass, the studio’s upcoming feature film, which is set to begin production in Louisiana in two weeks. Deadline Hollywood first broke the story. Cage was supposed to play one of two thieves who take a couple hostage in hopes of earning some easy money. Nicole Kidman was set to play the wife. The husband role, which initially was going to Cage before he opted to play the bad guy, still has not been cast. Joel Schumacher, who is on board to direct, had no comment.

The move comes on the heels of Cage’s recent box office disappointment, Disney’s expensive family film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which has only grossed $52 million after three weekends in release. It isn’t clear why Cage backed out of the project, or if he can be swayed to rejoin. Calls to his reps haven’t been returned. Stay tuned as this story is sure to develop.

'Inception' takes weekend again; 'Schmucks' bows to $23 million

Tags: ,

schmucks-carrell-rudd-3Image Credit: Merie Weismiller WallaceThree new wide releases could not top the powerful Inception, which in its third weekend remained in the top slot with $27.5 million. The PG-13 rated mind-bender lost only 35 percent of its value for a total that now stands at $193.3 million. And 12 percent of its take came from its IMAX screens, likely a factor due to repeat business for the well-received flick.

Paramount and Dreamworks’ comedy Dinner for Schmucks landed closest to Inception with a $23.3 million opening. The Steve Carell, Paul Rudd laugher opened in the range suggested by tracking, but with a B from exit pollster CinemaScore, audiences weren’t in love with the movie. Still, its score is the same as Date Night and I Love You, Man which could bode well for the Jay Roach-directed flick. READ FULL STORY »
