    Um…no mention of ‘The Conspirator’????

  • George

I really hope that Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter get Oscar nominations for their work in The King’s Speech. Both actors are WAY overdue for an Oscar!

  • mcw

I think True Grit and The Social Network will dominate the Oscar’s.

    • Ren

      Do you mean the Oscars?
(Why do you have an apostrophe there?)

      • llevinso

Maybe mcw is talking about some guy named Oscar that hands out awards every once in awhile. Totally different than the Academy Awards.

      • @llevinso

So lame. I’m embarrassed for you.

I can’t wait to see Black Swan with Natalie Portmen. She has come a long way from playing Padme Amidala in Star Wars.

    • m1

I highly agree. First Closer (GG-win), then Brothers, and now Black Swan. Let’s hope she’s in serious contention this year.

    My 2010 picks:
Shutter Island – Best Pic and Director
Leo DiCaprio – Best Actor/Shutter Island
    Marillon Cotillard – Best Supporting/Inception
    Julianne Moore – Best Supporting/Kids-Allright
    Annette Bening – Best Actress/Kids-Allright
Best various tech/creative awards – Inception
Natalie Portman – nomination for Best Actress, with Bening win
    WOO HOO!

    • fancypants

you have 2 winners for best supporting actress and no winner for best supporting actor.

    • llevinso

Hmmm, you have some overlapping winners there…

Buying tickets for TIFF this year is a real pain. The majority of films were already “off sale” last week- even though there are tickets available.
I wanted to get tickets for The King’s Speech SO BAD they’re gone. Darn you Visa, for complicating everything. So instead I’m gonna see Trust, the one with Clive Owen.

Curious that there is no mention of “Never Let Me Go” as an Oscar contender — I’d heard good buzz, and the book is amazing

    • Nick B

I’m really looking forward to seeing Never Let Me Go too. Perhaps it wasn’t mentioned here because Mr. Karger has not yet seen it? Although, I have actually been hearing that while the performances in the film are great, the movie as a whole falls a bit short, especially when compared to the book. I’m hoping Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley will be awards contenders, and I’ll still wait to judge the film as a whole until I see it myself.

      • llevinso

That’s too bad. I’m reading the book now and it’s really good!

      • Nick B

I know, I was a little bummed when I started to hear reviews that weren’t stellar. The book is fantastic. But like I said, I’ll still wait to see it on my own before I form an opinion.

I am dying to see Black Swan… Natalia Portman looks brilliant in the trailer. People forget Portman was a young ingenue in Leon (The Professional) and has really developed into a true actress.

    • Riley

Hopefully she will not be stiff and wooden like she was in “Closer”.

  • JMaG

    Can’t forget Inception =D

  • Ben

“Biutiful – Perhaps Cannes’ most polarizing film” -

Does the movie have a plot, other than being ‘dark’?

My guess would be that Bening will get a lead actress and Moore will take a spot in supporting actress. For the simple reason that Moore always seems to be getting nominated in supporting. Likewise, I think that the academy will nominate Lesley Manville for supporting actress: it seems likely that she would be a shoo-in for supporting, and a long shot for lead. Considering the film probably wont recieve too many nominations, they’ll want Manville for supporting actress.

    • Mr. Know-It-All

Actually, Moore is split evenly for nominations in supporting (Boogie Nights and The Hours) and leading (The End of the Affair and Far From Heaven). Bening is one behind her: she also has two in leading (American Beauty and Being Julia) but only one in supporting (The Grifters).
Put them both in the leading category and let the best woman win!

      • Jax

Thank you for correcting my oversight. However, I was referring to last year, when Moore almost recieved a nomination in the Supporting category, since that was most weighing on my mind. However, you are correct and I should have been more clear.
As far as putting them both in contention for lead, I can’t see it happening because neither would win. Portman or some other (equally worthy actress) would win instead, because Moore and Bening would split the vote. That is why Sean Penn was nominated for lead actor and Tim Robbins for supporting in “Mystic River”, despite the fact that Robbins has a role that is equal to Sean Penn’s. The last time that an actor won a Oscar while competing against an actor from their same picture was Zeta-Jones winning supporting for “Chicago” over co-star Queen Latifah. And neither Moore or Bening gave performances on the same caliber of Zeta-Jones in Chicago.

    what about Inception?

  • Mike

I wanna see The King’s Speech and Black Swan. I also wanna see “Applause”, just because of Paprika Steen. I like her acting so much~
