Box office preview: 'Legend of the Guardians' fights 'Wall Street' for top slot

legendof-the-guardiansImage Credit: Warner BrosIt’s not every weekend that we get to see owls battling investment bankers for our movie-going dollars. But this frame, Zack Snyder’s longest-titled film ever, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, takes on an equally verbose film, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. The two couldn’t be reaching for more different audiences (owls: families; Wall Street: grown-ups), but with the family audience not having a film to call their own in a long while (and, no, we’re not going to count the ho-hum Alpha and Omega), Guardians could win by default. Wall Street has the unfortunate distinction of being smack in the middle of The Town and The Social Network, two films that seem much more anticipated than Stone’s sequel to the iconic “Greed is Good” film of the ’80s. Read on for my predictions.

1. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole: $22 million

Really? Warring Owls? At first glance this premise doesn’t seem to be the subject matter blockbusters are built on. But it turns out the film comes from a series of best-selling children’s books, and reviews are falling all over the incredible 3-D effects in the film. Plus, you’ve got Zack Snyder on board, the man responsible for the visual stylings of both 300 and The Watchmen. Still, the film is said to be quite violent for the under-eight set, a factor that could prove challenging with concerned parents. Yet, with very little out there for families to see, Guardians could win the frame.

2. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps: $20 million

It debuted at Cannes to middling reviews and has since received even more from critics across the country. But there is a sense of nostalgia at play here, with Wall Street being one of the iconic movies of the 1980s. Add in Michael Douglas’ graceful battle with cancer, and the must-see factor of Shia LaBeouf, and audiences could come out in a stronger force than the tracking suggests. Whether it can do much more than $20 million remains to be seen.

3. The Town: $14 million

Closing in on $30 million after a week in release, The Town is over-performing across the country. Therefore, its second-weekend drop should be scant, perhaps somewhere around 40 percent for the frame. The combination of Ben Affleck, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, and Blake Lively is proving appealing to a broad swath of moviegoers. This weekend, the film will likely play younger and to more women.

4. Easy A: $10 million

This little $8 million movie has already generated over $21 million in grosses and turned Emma Stone into the star she deserves to be. Weekend two should be pretty strong, with the PG-13-rated teen flick likely to drop in the 40 percent range for the frame.

5 You Again: $8 million

With an innocuous title and a murky premise, this film from director Andy Fickman doesn’t seem to be resonating with many. While it boasts a solid cast of Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Betty White, the marketing materials don’t shed much light into the movie’s plot. Older women are the ones most interested, but it’s doubtful they’ll be able to get their significant others to come along for the ride.

In limited release, Paramount Vantage will open Davis Guggenheim’s powerful education documentary Waiting for ‘Superman’ in New York and Los Angeles, while Sony bows its Will Ferrell-produced R-rated low budget, shaky cam flick The Virginity Hit on 650 screens nationwide. Lionsgate will bow its Sundance acquisition Buried starring Ryan Reynolds on ten screens, while Woody Allen’s latest You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger opens on six screens.

So the only positive thing about the movie is its effects. Did anyone expect anything else from Snyder?

  • CJ

That what they said about Easy A last weak, about there not aving been a teen flick in a while. Legends of the guardian will come in third, maybe even fourth. Kids do not find the previews for that amusing at all. The Town will beat it because of the reviews it got for audiences who have seen it, Wall Street, Town, Legend, Easy A

When we saw the preview, my 5 year old said he wanted to see it. I asked him the other day if he wanted to see the owl movie and he replied “What owl movie?” – guess I don’t have to see it now.

      • Mitchell

Nice Try Jason — there will be plenty of other films your five year old will want to see. You could always wait for the DVD as well. Don’t be mean and against seeing the fabulous “Owl Movie” just because a five year old’s mind forgot — how many times to kids forget things? Show some respect next time.

so your saying that gahool will barely beat what alpha made last week , and the town will only drop 10 percent because it as a good movie guy third down on the post? How would owls be that low!? Oh and harry potter has a lot of dark movies. Some of them too dark for young kids…still almost made 1 billion world wide , so that has nothing to do with it. But it will be up to the boy crowd to get it done, which doesnt always work.

The Owl movie looks pretty cool. Should be even better in 3D.

  • cori

I am pretty sure karen kingsbury’s like dandelion dust comes out this weekend also….i know many people excited to see that one…

  • PJ

“The must-see factor of Shia LaBeouf”???? That might be the funniest thing I’ve ever read on this site.

    • b

      lmao i know right

    • Vighorois

You took the words out of my mouth! More like must-see a ophthalmologist!

    • Chris

I was going to type the same thing. You beat me to it!!

    • Dave

I was just about to comment on the same thing. Must-see? I don’t really understand all the appeal of Shia LaBeouf. He’s one of the reasons that I’m completely ambivalent on seeing this movie. I just don’t care for him.

  • thomas

i hope you again does better than predicted….and not because of betty white….but i like my old broads siggy and jaime

I think that $22mil will be the low, low range for the Owls of Ga’Hoole. The trailers make the film look absolutely gorgeous, thus widening the animated films appeal beyond just little kids.

  • anonymous

A movie about warring owls would work better as a comedy rather than the overly serious epic it looks like from the previews.

  • dee123

The film is made by the same company that made “Happy Feet” so they’re good at animals, plus it stars the voices of Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren & Ryan Kwanten which doesn’t hurt.

  • jamie

“…. turned Emma Stone into the star she deserves to be.”
I think it’s a little premature to call Stone a “star.” Let’s wait and see whether the audience buying tickets for “Easy A” will follow Stone to her next couple of films. “Juno” (a considerably better film than “A”) didn’t exactly turn Ellen Page into a box-ofice phenom.

    • Edina

Yeah, it’s amazing how “Inception” flopped.

      • bv

And “Inception” was really marketed as a Ellen Page film. I certainly know that’s why all my friends went to see it.

      • Dave

Edina, I love Ellen Page, but I’m pretty sure people didn’t flock to see Inception just because she was in it.

  • Diane

You Again and Wall Street 2 I’ll download or see on cable. Only movie I’m mildly interested in is Owls. It looks gorgeous

  • Santiago

Shia LaBeouf a must-see factor??? For me it is actually a must-NOT-see factor. It’s hard to forget the last Indiana Jones, or either Transformers movie!

  • Wladi

    Legend of the Guardians FTW!!!…^^

  • TARANTULA

The Legend of the Guardians by Zack Snyder is a visually STUNNING and GORGEOUS movie – filled with likable characters and some hefty themes. At the premiere screening, the kids responded positively and the adults were mesmerized by the uber-high quality animation/production. Stylistically, the BEST animated movie thus far. Period.

  • Atlantaseabreeze

Just saw “Wall Street”-enjoyed it a lot. Better than the 1st one, in my humble opinion!!
