'Social Network': Friday audiences Like it enough to make it No. 1 at box office

social-jesse-timberlakeImage Credit: Merrick MortonWith more than $8 million earnings on Friday night, The Social Network is destined for a first place finish at the weekend box office. How much it earns by Sunday night is still an open question, with estimates ranging from $21 million to $27 million. Even if the result is at the low end of that spread, Social Network will win the weekend easily. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’Hoole, and The Town all have a shot at $10 million for the weekend, with each earning around $3 million on Friday night.

Easy A is likely to grab the last spot in the top five in its third weekend, taking in more than $2 million on Friday night; its three-day take should be around $8 million. The weekend’s two new horror releases, Let Me In and Case 39, are not likely to generate much income. Both grossed less than $2 million Friday night, and are unlikely to earn much more than $5 million for the weekend. Come back tomorrow for a full report.

I can’t believe how little ‘Let Me In’ made on Friday. Finally a good vampire movie yet people pay more to see that crap that is ‘Twilight’. One of the many reason why I hate the American public.

    • Aaron

In defense of the American public. Let Me In looks good, but The Social Network looks better.

      • Larry David

I don’t expect ‘Let Me In’ to be number one at the box office, ‘The Social Network’ is a great film and deserves to be first. But making under $2 million, what a shame!

      • DT

Yeah, I knew THE SOCIAL NETWORK, which is absolutely awesome on just about every level btw, was going to rule the b.o., and I’m glad THE TOWN, also a good one, has such staying power, but the lack of business LET ME IN is doing is astounding. Surely, there are not that many snobs about the original Swedish version out there to account for this. I guess America likes their vampires as either campy or whiny yeen soap fantasies. BOO!

      • DT

That should be whiny TEEN soap fantasies. Ugh!

      • ObiHave

Let Me In isn’t showing in as many theaters. It may take some word of mouth. And please don’t rate the American public based on the insanity that surrounds Twilight. No one can explain that…but it’s not American…just a curse. BTW I did get to see Social Network…best film of the year thus far!
Looking forward to seeing Let Me In as soon as they get rid of the God-foresaken (pun intended) Devil.

    • ryan

Lets all donate money to larry so that he can move to a great country like china or mexico! ACtually maybe we will get a discount and just deport him to Canada?

      • philip freeman

move from the US to Canada? not sure if Americans can handle living in the best country in the world, not many gun stores and we have health care!

      • Dylan

@philip freeman: Actually, we Canadians have plenty of guns….

And I would take Canadian health care over the American setup, but it does mean you have to wait, like, 8 hours for the simplest of checkups.

    • Juvial

Can we stop treating CRAPLIGHT as if they’re real movies? They are only a 2 hour long commercial fest, using lifeless, almost mannequin like, beautiful “actors”. And also using as an excuse a horrid, and certainly, laughable “story” to sell horrid music and overpriced rags from the gap to dumb teenagers, their equally brainless mothers and sad old ladies who have nothing in life except to own cats and collect candles.. And yes, judging by how much money that garbage of a series makes, I say there’s a lot of sad and pathetic simpletons out there..

    • LD

All the smart Americans already watched the original and don’t want to pay for a shot-for-shot remake.

      • iheartpoco

        …the smart Canadians, too!

    • Dustin

just to add to how America sucks and your comment, Let Me In is a remake of an even BETTER Swedish vampire movie only made two years ago called Let The Right Ones In. I saw Social Network on midnight Thursday and happy I made that choice instead of the dumb remake

    • Mony

It could be because it is a remake, a lot of people saw the original and are in no mood to see a remake, esp when they loved the original

      • Large Marge

That was my thought process. I just couldn’t see any reason to pay $10.00 to watch a remake of a movie I just rented on video a few months ago, especially as the original was so amazing.

      • Kass

No that’s not the reason. People just don’t give a damn.
You need an audience and it doesn’t have it.

      • Lakers543

I don’t know anybody who wanted to see this movie.

    • Sia

LOL … You might not like Twilight but it doesn’t make 700 million world wide for no damn reason.
TWILIGHT ISN’T LOVED FOR THE VAMPIRES. Yes it makes the story interesting but IT’S THE DAMN LOVE STORY SO WHEN ARE YOU guys going to get that through your thick head ? It’s your opinion but damn have some respect for the MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS who love the story. It’s preference and it’s stupid that people like you have to look down on others.

      • Erin

I will certainly look down at you, Sia, for your “preference” of Twilight. Just as I judge those who like Michael Bay movies.

    • ashley

i know, it’s crazy! i saw it yesterday and it was great, i hope word of mouth saves it.

    • tabata

you hate 300 millions of people, really?

  • Deacon

    Like

  • bgl

I hate to say this but I really can’t see paying $10.00 to see The Social Network. I just can’t see it. DVD, yes. Box office, no.

    • JBD

It was good enough to see twice. $10 is nothing.

    • Jess

your loss. I saw The Social Network last night and it was brilliant. Easily the best movie of the year so far – by a mile.

  • steven c.

    Social Network was soooo good.

    • Donna

Agreed. Saw it last night and loved it.

  • Rand

Mr. David, you verbalize distain for the American public. Are you an American?

    • Anna

Probably. Good ol’ self-loathing Americans – can’t get enough of them. :-)

  • Dave

I saw The Social Network last night. It was really good and I very much enjoyed it. Glad to see it’s doing well. It definitely lived up to my expectations and all the hype, and Jesse Eisenberg was perfect. I’ll probably go see Let Me In next weekend. I kinda wish it were doing better. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.

  • Matt2

Are any of those numbers impressive? There were days when every other commercial on tv was for The Social Network. This thing was massively marketed at least on the shows I watched live on tv this week.

    • DT

For a non-summer, non-Christmas release, yes, that is pretty good. Yeah, how dare they advertise their movie. It’s not like it got the TRANSFORMERS/TWILIGHT/BATMAN treatment, and though young twentysomethings star in it, it’s a movie not exclusively aimed at that demographic, so getting the word out to grownups who might at first glace dismiss it as teen b.s. is important. However, you’re right in that there was a lot of TV saturation this past week., but it’s not like BATMAN movies don’t get the same thing or more.

      • Jennifer

They did advertise the movie more than any other fall film and it was just not this week. Maybe I’m just in their target audience but almost every show I watched this week had an ad for it. I always paused the DVR to see if it is the one with Kanye West’s Power. Love that song. I wouldn’t say the result is disappointing because some people get carried away with their expectation. Some were saying at least $40 million yesterday. Taking all factors into consideration, a finish in $20-$27 million range is decent, but not outstanding.

    • Jason

No, not impressive at all. Especially for a movie that’s almost 100% by critics and we are told it’s the defining movie of this generation…blah,blah,blah…hype…hype..hype. On Friday fans of The Social Network were quoting a $40 Million weekend. Guess their feet have fallen to the ground and they are being more realistic.

      • jen

wow, are you ever a complete idiot.

  • dvArMY

I do not even have a Facebook page, but this story intrigued me enough to see the movie and pay my money to see it. It had a great writer, score, director and cast. The dialogue and story was interesting whether you like Facebook or not.

  • m1

And what would you people put The Twilight Saga on a shelf with? Transformers 2 and The Last Song?! Yes, they are unimpressive but they’re not THAT stupid.

On another note, I am happy to hear that Easy A is doing well.

    • Troy

      You’re an idiot

      • m1

Empty insults will get you nowhere in life. But I wouldn’t expect you to know anything about that.

      • Troy

Yet your mother cant seem to get enough of me

      • m1

        @Troy: So funny (eye roll).

      • donkey tits

        @m1
what if we fill out insults with something? will they be less empty and get us to the upper echelon of life where we too can appreciate brain dead turds like you seem to love?
ps. you smell like farts and i think your face resembles that of a canine of some sort. eat my shorts.

      • m1

^ Was I even talking to you? What’s you problem?

      • Troy

@m1: glad you’re enjoy this.. Dumbass

      • m1

@Troy: And you’re replying to all of my comments because…?

      • Troy

Same reason you do you loser..

  • Janice D. Labiia

Justin Timberlake made my ginny tingle. A+ for “Social Network”

    • Mr. Good Bar

      I’ll make your ginny tingle.

      • Janice D. Labiia

Oh Mr. Good Bar, I knew my ears were burning for a reason. My ginny is burning too, but I know that reason. I hope you like beef curtains.

    • MarbleMouth Fisticuffs

Pour some Old Style on that tingle.

      • Janice D. Labiia

Oh my favorite drink! I had a husband who was an alcoholic and that was his drink of choice. He died of cancer while I was gallivanting around Las Vegas. When I returned from my vacation he was on the bathroom floor and there was an open can of Old Style on the counter. I sold his classic car a week later and I moved to Florida.

      • MarbleMouth Fisticuffs

You don’t say! Well at least you won’t have to cut him in on your winnings. And with the VA $ and SSI, you’re richer without him around. though having to run from his beatings did keep your heart healthy. It’s beautiful when you find out people died the way they were born:naked and drunk on a bathroom floor.
Oh Mother Hubbard, Please share your real estate tips for finding a shoe in Florida that was large enough to house all your illegitamate children and grandkids.

      • Janice D. Labiia

Don’t you think I tweak me nips every time I think about all the money I have made and saved with his untimely (he should have gone sooner) passing. I will miss the beatings though, they kept my legs dead sexy.

      • MarbleMouth Fisticuffs

When the pain gets unbearable fall into the fetal position and scream “Patty Duke!”

  • Dude

I wouldn’t put The Twilight Saga on any shelf. It would go in the toilet with my excrement.

    • m1

If only you could go in there with it.

      • Dude

So I insult a movie, and you insult me. Good for you, m1. I’ll take a page from your book: empty insults will get you nowhere in life.

      • m1

@Dude: At least I’m not cursing every ten seconds like Troy.

      • Dude

Whatever makes you feel better about yourself.

    • Troy

Don’t pay attention to m1, he’s a hapless loser who has this misguided belief of being a film conossour.. But how can you take someone serious when he praises twilight yet can’t shut the hell up about how much he hated inception.. Laughable imbecile

      • m1

        “…praises Twilight…hated Inception.”

Someone needs to throw YOU down a toilet. And did I not just make a comment a while ago saying that The Twilight Saga was unimpressive? Hapless loser you are.

    • Lakers543

Whatever grow up. I’m a guy who liked the movies and from what my wife said the movies suck compared to the books.
It’s stupid that guys bash on it all the time. Let the ladies enjoy it.

      • m1

Does your wife know you’re gay?

      • m1

@Lakers543: I did NOT write that comment directly below yours!

      • Dude

Lakers543, I’m not above liking a movie about romance. Bashing Twilight has nothing to do with me being a guy. It has everything to do with the Twilight movies being terrible movies, with bad writing, bad source material, and bad acting.

  • Vita

Social Network trailer didn`t do justice to actual movie !!! One of the best movies of this year . A definite must see !!! Town is very good as well . The cast, directing, the script !!!! Also planning to see “Let me in”

  • Tommy D

Just got back from seeing the Social Network. Well worth the price of admission!

  • Nathan

3 good movies in theaters at the same time right now with Social, Town and Let Me In. Can’t remember the last time there were 2 good movies around at the same time.

  • cam

It’s too bad about “Let Me In.” I blame Case 39. Just think of poor little Chloe crying because she thinks no one likes her. :( Hopefully it will have legs.

Facebook does look good tho. I’ll see both.

    • m1

I blame Case 39 as well, and I also think that the people who spend their time at horrible films like the Saw franchise and that awful One Missed Call remake should get blame, too.

      • Troy

m1, I blame your parents for you being born.. You useless c@unt
