Zack Snyder to direct 'Superman'

Warner Bros. is sticking with its roster of talented filmmakers for its reboot of the Superman franchise. The studio announced today that Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Watchmen, and the recent animated flick The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole will helm the franchise.

Snyder will direct from a script currently being penned by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins) based on a story conceived by Goyer and Christopher Nolan. Nolan, who took the Batman franchise to new heights and stunned audiences this summer with Inception, is producing the film with his wife and partner Emma Thomas. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) will also produce with Deborah Snyder, Zack’s wife and producing partner.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics is targeting the film for a holiday 2012 release. Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull will executive produce.

    Yessssssssss!!!!

    • Sam Puckett

As long as they bring back Brandon Routh, I’ll be okay, and they can cast Kerri Russell as Lois Lane

      • Grubi

I sincerely doubt that they’re bringing Routh back. He was part of the reason that the last superman was so boring. Not to mention, it wouldn’t be a “reboot” if they used the same actor

      • Nathan

Routh needs to go, just start from scratch.

      • Michael

yea. as long as they bring back brandon

      • mal

brandon routh, while not the best actor out there by any means, was a perfect superman. his delivery as both superman and clark kent was exactly as it should have been. kate bosworth was awful, the script was terrible and the direction sucked, but they got superman absolutely perfect.

      • t3hdow

Despite Routh not being the most charismatic actor, he was hardly the reason Superman Returns turned out to be so dull. It was the derivative plot that made it unbearable, along with Kate Bosworth’s impossible-to-believe version of Lois Lane. With a better direction and a new Lois Lane, the next Superman film could be pretty good. Although it won’t be too upsetting if Routh isn’t asked back, at least he looks the part better than most current Hollywood actors.

      • Chappel

There were a LOT of problems with Superman Returns but I don’t think Brandon Routh was one of them.

      • ELTON LALA

Russell would be my 2nd pick.
My 1st pick is MOLLY C. QUINN.
She will be next sucess story after Michael Grimm.

      • ELTON LALA

        lois lane=MOLLY C.QUINN

      • ELTON LALA

        CASTLE CAST HAS LOIS LANE.

      • Andrew M

        Ummmm… Jon Hamm?!?!

      • Skip182

Routh’s contract to play the character officially expired last year. I doubt they’ll rehire him.

    • Carly Shae

Snyder should cast Dwayne Johnson as Clark Kent/Superman, and Ed O’Neil as Perry White. I’d like to see Smith Cho as Lois Lane, and John Cena as Zod.

      • jpdaviesl7

Good night. Please tell me you’re joking.

  • Bibbity Bop

Sounds amazing. Snyder’s visuals tied with Nolan’s guidance might be the perfect mix. Snyder has yet to really have a tremendous story to match the look of his films.

Also, I love this. Check out my website where I met an older dude. I love it so much that I post on every article.

  • Nathan

Nice choice, the visuals in Watchmen were pretty incredible.

  • jpratm

Warner Bros are fools= Bryan Singer should of kept with the story- reworking and being greedy is going to backfire the reason why superman returns had lackluster returns was to the fact that superman was upstaged by spiderman batman and xmen thats why- superman is the MAN !! but its audience is for the simplistic viewer- Superman Returns was great sorry to hear that its from scratch begin again.

    • It’s all about the money

Superman Returns was considered a failure by Warner Bros because it barely made $200M at the domestic box-office. Viewers were put off by the “real estate” scheme of Lex Luthor which is quite similar to his real estate scheme in the first Superman movie. And Kate Bosworth was a luckluster Lois Lane although Brandon Routh as Superman was ok.

  • Shawn

Please don’t let the villain be Lex Luthor again. That’s I all I ask.

    • Tim

I so agree!!! Enough with Lex Luthor for once!

      • Jerry

Lex will probably be in it. My hope is that their will be another villain that can actually stand toe to toe in a fight with Supes. Darkseid would be epic.

      • If it’s Lex Luthor again…

If they’re going for Lex Luthor as the villain, they should make him an evil but brilliant billionaire-industrialist, just like in the comics and the animated series. Previous Superman movies portray Lex Luthor as a smart-ass con-man huckster which was not credible when he tangled with Superman.

  • Mr So & So

With a crew like this I can happily wait two years, hopefully humans are still around at this point though.

  • BOMBER

John Hamm… no wait… Matt Bomber for Clark Kent! I was always convinced it didn’t happen because of his sexuality. BOMBER FOR SUPERMAN! All the way. Zack Snyder’s a great choice, way to go WB!

    • DT

What? Is Bomer gay? Not that that matters at all. It’s just that I’m not sure if that’s an issue here because Bryan Singer is also gay. Or are you saying he was discriminated against for being straight?

      • BOMBER

I’m fairly certain he’s openly gay. I’ve always wondered if that cost him the role the first time around. Before Bryan Singer got a hold of ‘Superman Returns’, the guy that directed ‘Charlie’s Angels’ was in control of the film. Even after the film crossed over to Singer, Bomber was still on the very short-list of unknowns (I’m pretty sure he would’ve been Superman if McG had directed… but he left for creative differences). Anyways, I do think the audience’s reaction to an openly gay actor in such an iconic role was a consideration. It had to have been, it’s Superman. I want to hear more about it, it would be an interesting story.

      • BOMBER

One more thing: Bryan Singer was behind the camera, so his sexuality didn’t affect the marketing or promotion of ‘Superman Returns’.

      • BOMER

My bad, it wasn’t McG… it was Brett Ratner.

      • DT

The general public can be fickle that way. After all, a guy in a blue unitard and red cape screams, “Hetero!” So is this movie going to be as gay as the hyper-macho, overcompensating 300, also filmed by Snyder?

  • JDMB

wasn’t the movie a couple of years ago a “reboot”? They’re rebooting the reboot? or am I missing something here?

    • Nerwen Aldarion

Superman Returns was a continuation from Superman 2, This is a reboot called The Man of Steel

      • DT

These boots are made for re-ing / And that’s just what they’ll do / One of these days the movie execs are gonna wanna reboot you

  • General Zod

    Kneel before Zod.

    • Matt

I will, but it’s $50 up front and keep your hands to yourself.

      • ObiHave

        PRICELESS!!!

  • A-K87

Great News. Watchmen was too flawless to ignore. Cannot wait for this now!

  • Flip

Nooooooooo! This guy is awful. And a homophobe to boot.

    • CHR

      DonĀ“t forget inmature

    • Jose

You really think that the guy that did 300 is a homophobe?

      • Flip

Yep. The proof is in the movie and in Watchmen.

      • Niix Starkyller

Proof? LOL. Go on. Make your argument. I would like to be entertained.

  • Kevin Arnold

Justin Bieber as Superman, Miley Cyrus as Lois Lane and Shaquille O’Neal as Lex Luthor

    • Michael

HAHAHAHAHAHA nice except the situation should be lex luthor

  • dm

ugh, he better not screw it up.
Henry Cavill for Superman. Rachel McAdams for Lois Lane, please.

  • Gina Vera

maybe for the next Superman they will cast actors that actually match the description of their characters. It was really hard to see the blue contacts on the last guy or fake brown hair on Louis. It was like Jessica Alba in the fantastic 4 it was awful. Is there a shortage of actors they can’t hire unknowns to help us ‘buy’ the story that has been as old as time itself?

  • Molly

I liked Superman Returns a lot. Hopefully this one will be enjoyable as well.
