'Social Network' and 'Life As We Know It' battle for first place at box office

life-as-we-know-it-02Image Credit: Peter IovinoNo film will cross $20 million again this weekend but it’s sure that the one that gets closest will win first place. Whether it will be last weekend’s first place winner The Social Network or this frame’s new romantic comedy Life As We Know It is still undetermined. Social Network earned an estimated $4.9 million yesterday while the Katherine Heigl- Josh Duhamel starrer grossed a bit over $5 million on Friday.

In third place is another of this weekend’s new releases, Secretariat. The Diane Lane-starrer earned an estimated $4 million for its opening day. Spots four and five are likely to belong to kid flick Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole which grossed under $2 million on Friday and Wes Craven’s new flick, the 3-D horror film My Soul to Take, which grossed an estimated $2.7 million for the day. The order of these two films has yet to be determined. In fact, the top five are all very much in flux.  Saturday will be crucial in determining the winner.

Check back tomorrow for complete results.

    • mary q contrary

I heard it was trite, predictable, and tired.

      • LOL

HaHa WELL I think we all know what Facebook is about!!!!!!!!!!!! And the story of the owner!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

      • Erin

No LOL you are mistaken. People know what Facebook is, but most do not know the backstory.

      • hint

ya we do know the story..and I bet a lot of people do have a hint of what it’s about.

  • Kevin Arnold

An Oscar for Katherine Heigl…let the Facebook campaign begin!!!

    • lydia

      good joke

    • Ethan

I will totally support it….if you change the word Oscar to Razzie.

      • m1

She’s not that bad…but she better make smart decisions soon if she doesn’t want to wind up like Jennifer Aniston.

      • Teri

you mean making millions of dollars making the same movie over and over again? Something tells me neither woman cares.

  • Bradd Bradd

So happy Social Network held up well. Number one this weekend let’s do thissss! It’s such a great movie, my favorite of the year so far. Andrew garfield deserves an oscar.

    • GetItRight!

What’s wrong writers?! Do you not know how to write 5,250,000?? Pathetic website!

      • disappointed

Jessie Eisenberg deserves an Oscar. However, the makers of Life as We Know It have put on quite a tv ad campaign with its quick cuts of stellar uncreditable reviews making the movie look like its not completely awful actually not be another sure to be down right awful movie by Heigl.

      • disappointed

EW, where’s the spell check when you need it?

  • Jonathan

Reason, you’re right…I was “dragged” to see “Life as We Know It” and had very, very modest expectations at best, and I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Some of the critical lashing I think is just because it’s a genre picture, but as a guy, I was pretty damn surprised at how much I liked it, and my wife liked it even more. Katherine Heigl’s character was a bit shrill again, but she had a nice character arc and warmed up around the edges. It was a harmless, feel good flick. I’d recommend it.

    • derek

Well of course you would reccomend it, you’re paid to do that. If I was being paid to go message boards to pretend to like movies, I would pimp everything, even this obvious turd.

      • oh brother

Wow you’re bitter! Get a life!

      • derek

Pointing out the obvious isn’t being bitter. As far as getting a life, I’m posting on an entertainment website on a Saturday night, so you might have a point there. Of course, since you’re doing that as well, I guess we have that in common.

    • PJ

My best friend and I saw LAWKI last night. Went with low expectations, just wanting a bit of mindless fluff at the end of a long week. Oscar worthy? No. It was, however, better than expected and not just a bunch of cheap laughs.

  • Jose

Saw The Social Network and I was glad that it lived up to the buzz. This race does seem pretty tight.

  • The Jackal

It’s laughable. I always see people whining about Hollywood not making good, original movies but yet this movie makes it to number 1.

    • Jose

The weekend is not over yet, so The Social Network could still win the weekend, very likely considering how close the two movies are.

    • Jenz

I wouldn’t call the Social Network an original movie. It’s an origin flick based on a real story/book.

      • Jose

I was reffering to how “The Social Network” could still win the weekend, plus even if it’s not original it is still good.

    • Katie

The social Network is an extreme exception. First of all, if someone didn;t know anything about it, they would think it was about facebook. Second: ad campaigns pushed toward young viewers. Third: justin Timberlake in every preview, again young audience.

  • Eve

Life as We Know It looks stupid. Great, another dumb romantic comedy. Start making some good films

  • Kate

Saw Life as we Know It and it was sooo much better than I thought it would be! They had fabulous on screen chemistry and some very funny and touching moments.

    • Kevin!

I totally agree, the critics really don’t understand that all movies aren’t award winners, sometimes its good just to have a feel good enjoyable movie.

    • Erin

Kate, you could not sound more like a studio plant.

    • philip freeman

      you lie!

    • Alice

Well….how about this for studio plant. I cut work yesterday to see Life As We Know It because I actually look forward to romantic comedies that are completely predictable and adhere to some strict genre rules. This movie did not disappoint my expectations. I think Josh Duhamel is dreamy, Katherine Heigl is likable and the ending was happy. I liked The Social Network last weekend as well, but they’re COMPLETELY different movies. Both serve different purposes…..after a long week at work, I’m fine to have some unrealistic romance.

  • Phil

There is absolutely ZERO reason for MY SOUL TO TAKE to be in 3D, not even one scene.

    • vanka

      Amen to that!

    • Dean

My Soul to take is a zero.

      • Phil

It was actually a more standard approach to classic horro films where they keep you guessing who the killer is until the end. Its by no means Wes’ best work, but for an October release thats an actual horror film and NOT a torture/gorefest marketed as a horror film, I’d recommend seeing it.

      • m1

        @Phil: Speaking of ‘studio plants’…

      • Phil

m1…I’m NOT a studio plant. I’ve been an EW PopWatch>Music Mix commentor since the blogs’ inception. I work in the media, NOT for any studio or company. My opinions are my own, and NO ONE forms them. I don’t attack you on the weekends when you come here & post your opinions, I’d expect the same courtesy. I saw press screenings of BOTh LIFE AS WE KNOW IT and MY SOUL TO TAKE this week. Here’s a clue for ya, if I were a studio plant, my initial comment wouldn’t have been about MY SOUL TO TAKE not being worth the cost of a 3D ticket! Please read more carefully and to not assume.
And honestly, this goes out to everyone here. Its SO SAD that you automatically assume ANYONE that has a personal reaction/comment about any movie they’ve seen is an automatic studio plant. Its so sad that thats the (cyber) world we’ve all created where no one could possibly be that affected by something they’ve seen to leave an honest reaction. Seriously, think about that.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I saw The Social Network yesterday, always great to see a movie live up to the buzz. I hope it takes the number 1 spot again.

  • vanka

    Team Facebook!!!

    • Woot

      NO!!! TEAM JACOB!!!

      • WINNER

No!!!!!!!Team The Town!!!!!!!!! That’s the movie winner!!!!!!!

      • m1

        Team Easy A!!!

  • tomm

I think some were ready to bash it simply because of Kath. But reviews say she is better in this then the last 3 ‘shrew’ movies she did.

I like Josh D. and glad to see him in #1 movie.

  • Trixie

That baby is so freaking cute. I don’t really want to see this movie, but my heart melts every time I see that little red-haired sweetheart.
    (Blame hormones)

  • Claire

I liked the movie even though they need to stop giving so much of the movie away on the previews…

  • larry k

If you havent seen Let Me IN (and most people havent),then go see it.It was really good!

    • Woot

I already saw it when it was called Let the Right One In. Just kidding, i’m not one of those haters. I really want to see it, it just isn’t playing here
