Box office update: 'Paranormal Activity 2' breaks R-rated midnight record with $6.3 million

The demons, and quite a few moviegoers, were out last night for the midnight debut of Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2, which grossed $6.3 million from 12:00 a.m. screenings, according to studio estimates. That figure is the highest midnight gross for an R-rated film, besting Watchmen‘s $4.6 million take from last year. It also smashes the record for the largest October midnight opening, which was set all of one week ago when Jackass 3D collected $2.5 million. Paramount has been heavily promoting Paranormal Activity 2 as a “midnight movie,” and this early turnout practically ensures that the sequel will surpass its predecessor’s wide-release opening of $21.1 million.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the first film, but it was decent. And I truly hope this movie makes more than the next “we’ve completely overstayed our welcome” Saw movie.

People in America have no lives and seem to be gettin dumber by the minute. Did they actually go to a midnight showing for this idiotic film? I’m guessing most of the people who went are unemployed fat losers and thats why they are able to see this at midnight.

Excuse me, I’m a huge troll.

      • Larry David

And a sad excuse for a man

      • Larry David

I confess – this is my way of admitting I’m an unemployed fat loser. I actually saw this film last night in between my own idiotic posts on this website. Didn’t mean to take it out on you Paranormal Activity 2. Clearly I need help.

Want to be just like me?! Try my Mad-Lib fun!

(Noun, topic of EW article) is the (adjective, detracting) thing I’ve ever heard of! It seems like in the near future, everyone in America will (verb, pessimistic and insulting). I can’t believe that (noun, something reasonable to any sane individual) is happening! If this continues, I swear I’ll (verb, something that everyone wishes this troll would do)!

I’m hoping to one day get the male breast-reduction surgery I so desperately need!

      • Larry David

I completely changed my mind: Paranormal Activity 2 is the bomb!
Sorry dudes for being so harsh, I know I’m a fat coward but you made made me realize how pathetic I am

      • Katyo

        Lmao@the second Larry David. Hilarious.

  • Sasha

Wow, it’s already made back twice the money it cost to make. I guess more sequels will be on the way.

    • Woot

Lets hope not. Love the first one, will probably enjoy the 2nd… but I don’t like the idea of it becoming a franchise.

      • Woot

Okay just saw the 2nd one. I am now okay with ONE more movie… just cause…

  • nickinpgh

In my area there were 10:00 p.m. shows too? Is that included in this total? Does it make the statistic invalid?

    • Zo

That’s my question too. Our area had the 10pm screenings.

  • twitter:spaghetticats

I went to a free screening and when the movie ended, everyone booed and moaned.

    • KarlHall

      Cos it was too scary?

      • Jared

They probably moaned and booed because of the sucky ending that gives the impression that this could turn into another horror franchise

  • Flip

I loved the first one, so hopefully the second one is just as good.

  • Matt2

Geez, 6.3 million from midnight shows. Guess those analysts predictions of PA2 grossing 26-28 million for the weekend are going to be way too low. The question is just how big will PA2 be this weekend. Bigger than Jackass 3D’s 50 million dollar weekend???

  • Rusty

If you liked the first movie, chances are you will like this one. It’s basically the same film re-played. However, there are some nice scares and funny moments. I don’t get why people who hate movies like these would even bother. If your so self-serious that you can’t even just relax and enjoy a stupid popcorn movie, then by all means, just stay home.

    • Dave

Is there any relation between this one and the first one? Or are they essentially unrelated? I didn’t see the first one, but my friends want me to come see this one tonight.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

There is a BIG relationship between the first and the second one, in fact I recommend watching the first one before seeing the second one

      • RBlues

HUGE connection to first movie. I was surprised and thought it was, actually, very clever.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I saw PA2 tonight! If you liked the first one you will like the second. The ending isn’t as good as the first film but the scares are a bit more intense

    • Woot

Really good way of describing it. I felt like I was slightly more on edge during the 2nd one… but the ending is just really abrupt. I liked it, just… abrupt.

  • Jon

God, people are such pathetic lemmings. Anyone who would waste their money to watch shut idiotic drivel needs to be lobotomized. Cheap, superficial, completely UN-SCARY garbage made by hacks. You can have it. The first one was a joke and this one looks just as bad but even more desperate. Seriously, what a great way to flush your money down the toilet. Suckers. Lol.

    • Ulf Claesson

You don’t have much of a sexlife, do you?

  • professional might get

Think I’ll stick with SAW 3D this halloween rather than some rubbish filmed on a camcorder.
In the end all the little put togethers will be put together.
