Awards screeners for movies like Solitary Man, City Island, Animal Kingdom, and Mother and Child have been in voters’ hands for a few weeks now, and this week I saw the first For Your Consideration trade ad that listed possible contenders by category. The distinction goes to Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, which is being touted for Best Picture, Best Director (Tim Burton), Best Actor (Johnny Depp), and Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway), along with 13 other categories.
Will Alice be a top contender in the Oscar race? Probably not, of course. I’m told the studio’s major goal is a nomination in the Best Picture, Comedy or Musical category at the Golden Globes. (Though the eye-popping film could end up factoring into some of the Academy’s technical races.) Nonetheless, I find it interesting that the FYC-ad season kicked off not with a tiny indie flick like Winter’s Bone or Get Low but with the No. 2 top grosser of the year so far. We’ll see if the move pays off.

“Alice In Wonderland”? You’re f—ing with me, right?
brando is right. What about Inception?
City Island baby!!!! Italiano families rock!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3
Alice doesnt deserve any of the big awards. the movie is just so forgettable.
It was actually pretty great.
um. no. Disney should be focusing on giving Toy Story 3 some very much deserved For Your Considerations… I still havent seen a better movie this year.
Yessssssssssssssssssssss. Agreed times infinity and beyond.
I thought How To Train Your Dragon was better than Toy Story 3, but that’s just my opinion
Liked TS3, but HTTYD was just amazing both story wise and visually.
COMPLETELY agree. I loved TS3, don’t get me wrong. But I thought that HTTYD was much more original and beautiful than toy story 3. If it isn’t considered for the awards, I will be sending some nasty letters…
No offense, but HTTYD has been done so many times (as of course has the prison break aspect of Toy Story 3) also HTTYD has nothing to do with the comment paige made. Just saying.
@Woot: No offense taken. But Paige said that she hadn’t seen a better movie than TS3…I was stating my opinion that while TS3 was great, I enjoyed HTTYD more. While it’s true that both stories overall HAVE been done before (there are only so many ways humans tell stories), I thought HTTYD had more surprising moments and more heart, and like I said – visually, it was stunning. This is my opinion. You can disagree. Others will. Others won’t. That’s the great thing about opinions.
Haha can’t agree with you more on that
paige you should see the movie i made in my room then. Its called Bongo and the sock
I thought this movie was terrible; the fact that they think some of these ‘considerations’ are actually Oscar-worthy is pretty laughable.
Agreed – the movie was terrible and isn’t worthy of a thing. I actually had to struggle to get through it.
Depp is going lead? He might have a shot if he went supporting.
The FYC ad for How to Train Your Dragon was released weeks ago…
exactly what I was thinking…
It might win for Most Disappointing Movie of the Year, though I think it’s strongest chances are for Most Annoying.
The best Alice in Wonderland can hope for is a People’s Choice Award nomination, the good news is that if it wins a thousand of those, they can trade up for an Oscar (nomination).
If this movie is nominated for Best Picture, I will officially quit the Oscars forever.
The movie suxed.
I think it will win for Costume Design, or should, what brilliant dresses, immaculate!
I definitely see Alice in Wonderland getting a slew of tech nods, but it will have some interesting competition. Any thoughts on that, Dave?
i can totally see AIW getting the techincal nods and maybe even a GG nod for Musical/Comedy, but i definitely don’t see it as Oscar worthy. MAYBE if Johnny went for best supporting actor.
Ugh!
