'Rabbit Hole': Exclusive clip of Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Dianne Wiest

They’ve got five Oscar nominations and three wins between them. And now Nicole Kidman and Dianne Wiest are firmly in the running for nods this year for their performances as mother and daughter in John Cameron Mitchell’s adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole (out Dec. 17). Although they both play women who have lost children, the two of them actually provide some of the intense film’s lighter moments. In this clip provided by Lionsgate, Wiest’s character, Nat, tells Kidman’s Becca about a friend who got on her nerves after her son died of a drug overdose. This scene had the crowd howling at the Rabbit Hole premiere in Toronto.

Check back here in the coming weeks for more exclusive clips from this season's top Oscar contenders.

Saw the movie at TIFF. Great acting all around.

  • TorontoTom

Always been a fan of Kidman but I would have loved to see Cynthia Nixon reprise her Tony-winning role from the Broadway production onto the screen.

    • Erin

Considering Nicole was the one who bought the screenplay and went all out to get it produced, I say she rightly deserves the role over Cynthia.

  • keith

I think Wiest will be a lock for a nomination. Good to see her back in a high profile role. She’s a gem. Not so sure about Kidman. I, too, would have prefered Nixon in the role.

  • Flo

I find it very, VERY interesting how (suddenly) so many people would have loved to see Cynthia Nixon in this film. Nicole Kidman is apparently extraordinary in it (just read the reviews) but some people still need to find a way to not give her any credit and to belittle her. How can anyone say that Cynthia Nixon is more interesting or talented than Nicole Kidman is beyond me.
And honestly, if Nixon wanted to be in this film, she should have done what Kidman did: buy the rights of the play, hire John Cameron Mitchell, hire David Lindsey-Abaire to write the screenplay, hire Aaron Eckhart, Dianne Wiest, Sandra Oh, shoot the film in barely 28 days with a budget of less than $10 million, bring the film to the TIFF and find a distributor for it. And of course, give a fantastic, Oscar-worthy performance. Kidman did all that. She’s the star and the executive producer of ‘Rabbit Hole’. She has worked on this film since 2006. If the film gets Oscar nominations, it will be thanks to her. I hope it happens. Cynthia Nixon could have done what Kidman did. But she chose to make ‘Sex and the City 2′instead.
    Get over it.

      Amen Flo, totally agree.
Kidman is the winner of 2010.

      • Will

I don’t know, Natalie Portman in Black Swan was pretty stellar..It’ll be a tough award season.

      • hc

Are you that naive? Do you think Cynthia Nixon has the money, resources, and clout to buy rights and get films greenlit? This is nothing against Nicole Kidman – kudos to her dedication and acting abilities, but don’t think looks have nothing to do with the position and power a Kidman has compared to a Nixon. The same thing happened when “Proof” was adapted for the screen – both Mary Louise Parker and Jennifer Jason Leigh got raves for it on Broadway, but for the movies the role was given to Gweneth Paltrow.

    • Chris

lol I love the “she chose to make Sex in the City 2 instead”.

      • Dave

HA! I lol’d at that too!

      • scrutinizer

        Me 3 ;)

      • Esma

Designers are way to expensive for sure I stredunand. Some of the coolest bags are no name vintage finds. I always say if designers were cheap and affordable then no one would want? them. It’s nice to dream. Purses are over priced college is way more important!

    • keith

All of that notwithstanding, Flo, Nic’s track record hasn’t exactly been consistent either. My preference was for performance only, that’s all. And there’s nothing suddenly about it. I thought that the moment I heard the film was in production. I can only go by what I know, since I haven’t seen it, that Nixon’s performance in the role was acclaimed. But I wish Nic well. She certainly is due for a return to form.

      • Strepsi

I agree she’s inconsistent, but THE OTHERS was one of the best films of the last decade, and in Moulin Rouge she gave an amazing amazing performance. When she is on, she is ON.

    • Chris James

Thank you so much Flo. I completely agree and remain the biggest Nicole kidman supporter. Even if her track record is spotty, she is always one to take risks in every single film she does, no matter if it pays off or not. I admire that and even enjoy many of her “flops”. Cannot wait for Rabbit Hole!!!!!

      • Alex

Thank you Chris James! She may not always have success but look at the variety of characters she has played. Its insane, shes done every genre, and pretty much all type of characters. Who else can you say that for? Amaing actress, and it appears this will be a great role for her. Cannot wait to see it!

    • RCB

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t you post this exact same thing a few weeks ago? I’m having a deja vu moment.

      • Oscar Historian

Yes, read the comments section for the September 16 column: “Rabbit Hole”: Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart Enter the Oscar Race”. Flo, Erin and a few other posters virtually had this identical discussion.

    • Aaron

Thank you!!! Kidman worked her a** off to get this film made, and now she is getting rightly praised. People need to show some respect. If Nixon wanted to reprise her stage role in a film, she should’ve done what Nicole did. But she chose to make Sex and the City 2. Her loss.

    • Terri Thresher

I didn’t know much about the “Rabbit Hole”, but from what I saw of the clip it looks wonderful. It will be way better for N.K.’s obvious passion to make this movie.

    • christi

I agree 100%….Nicole you are an incredible actress, woman, wife and mother…enough with the BS…give credit where it is due

      • Sayali

I’m glad it worked out for them, I wdeonr if they will have babies? Was it ever found out what happened between her and Tom? I bet it’s a great story!

  • jessica

I saw this at TIFF too, Kidman is so good. Her best performance in years and deserves all the recognition.

  • Pauly T.

I watched Rabbit Hole at AFI this past Sunday and was totally surprised by the rich humor included in this emotionally raw gem. It’s got acting nominations all over it.

  • Josh

It’s good that there is finaly a comedic clip out there…I have a good feeling about this film

  • Brad

I’ve seen this as well, and will add to Kidman’s praise. She was fantastic (and I would also say that I greatly enjoyed Eckhart and Wiest as well)

  • RyRyNYC

After seeing the trailer, I was gonna relegate this to my “must see before oscar night” list, but after that clip I feel it needs to be bumped up to my “must see before nominations” list. I’ve always enjoyed Weist and glad she is getting high profile roles again, I mean she one of the rare DOUBLE Oscar winners.

    • RyRyNYC

      Ughhh… I before E: Wiest. Oops.

  • dee123

I’ve never understood why there is so much nastiness for Kidman, besides she should of won (or at least nominated) years ago for To Die For.

    • ziggy

She was incredible in To Die For! So relentlessly surprising and intense. She’s a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to this film.

  • Michael

I can’t wait to see this movie! I think it looks fantastic, and I love both Kidman and Wiest!

  • ziggy

These two actresses make the dialogue so natural and believable. I truly feel like I’m eavesdropping on a mother-daughter conversation. They are incredible. Can’t wait to see the film!

  • Jeri

It’s Nicole’s botox they are judging. Her acting has always been good but her use of fillers and botox has overshadowed her acting for several years. Her face had very little movement making it difficult to show emotions. However, she has cut way back on the botox and is making an effort to please her critics recently.

    • Strepsi

100% correct. SNd she had thin little cupid’s-bow lips that were perfect for period films, but the filler in the upper lip distorted that too. I hope she quits it and her skin rebounds, because as a movie actor she’s one of the all time champs.

  • sweething.

Despite her several botox treatements, for me absolutelly unnecessary and insignificant, for me Nicole is still one of the few actress that can let me enter entirely in each movies that she makes. She’s a great woman.
I deeply admire her works, her way ti live, her way to deal with ordinary peole..I also had a pleasure to met her at the premier of fur in Rome..she’s great!!
I mean she’s a star one of the most famous in the world and after all sometimes she fails to appear just like an ordinary woman.
I belive that this movie will be a great triumph! I cannot wait:)

    • Zach

I love Kidman, but had she been in SATC on TV, she would have done the movie too. Anybody would have. And let’s not write out Nixon so soon. She’s 3/4 of the way to an EGOT.
