Moore/PR PhotosEW has confirmed that stand-up comic and star of FX’s Rescue Me Denis Leary is in talks to join director Marc Webb’s new Spider-Man movie as police captain George Stacy, the father of Peter Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). (The Hollywood Reporter first reported the story.) In the comics, Capt. Stacy is a major advocate of Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield), although in one storyline, he’s killed amid a battle between the web-slinger and Doctor Octopus. In 2007′s Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man 3, the character was played by James Cromwell.

Production on Webb’s Spider-Man is set for this December, with an expected 3-D release in July 2012.

    Ewwwww. Yuck. Pedophile Capt. Stacy?

    • Seddie is meant to be

He looks like William Dafoe who was in the first spidey trilogy – this new movie sounds worse day by day

      • Brian

Dafoe’s first name is spelled Willem.

  • Jake

So he’s probably gonna die in this one, right? Is Gwen gonna die in this one or the next?

Leary cast in anything is a bad idea. I don’t know how this guy made it into Hollywood.

    • Ripping off Bill Hicks . . .

. . . and Louie CK among others.

      • Jerv

Did you see the Thomas Crown remake? Leary was very good in that, as well as the underseen “The Ref.” So lay off. Louie CK is worthless; at least Leary paid his dues to some extent.

In defense of Louis C.K. (yes, it’s with an ‘s’, not an ‘e’), his stand-up specials have been real funny. Don’t care much for his new show, but I loved “Lucky Louie.”

    • Nathan

He should stick to truck commercials, you see the guy in a movie and you don’t see the character, just “hey, it’s Denis Leary”

    • Terry

Hey, I love Rescue me. And he was good in the Thomas Crown Affair, True Crime and The Ref.

  • HC

guessing there aren’t many Rescue Me fans in here…. umm YES to this casting rumor. Denis Leary is awesome… as long as he plays a drunk firefighter.

  • Dr. Otto

EW, please stop reminding us of the existence of Spider-Man 3.

My God, who is casting this film???? Spidey sucks, Gwen got worse, and now this. Not that I don’t like these actors, but cast as these characters? Really? Evidently they haven’t a clue what they are doing, which leaves me extremely disappointed – and now, no longer interested.

Too bad Leary isn’t up for J. Jonah Jameson. That would have been an inspired choice.

  • Christian

The casting of Captain Stacy is a good sign. Maybe they will do the Death of Gwen Stacy in the second film. 1st movie: Origin of Spidey, Battles Doc Ock, Capt Stacy dies. 2nd movie: Origin of Green Goblin, Death of Gwen Stacy.

This guy’s personality and his voice is like fingernails across a blackboard. And his face seems to be stuck in a repulsive permanent sneer.

  • Brian

What’s with all the Denis Leary hate? He’s tremendous in Rescue Me. His involvement is a sign of good things as far as I’m concerned. This casting news gets me more excited to see what they do with this movie.

  • Rush

Please explain again why this is being re-booted? Oh yeah, Sony needs money.

  • Rob

Sony: “OK — I’m tired of people saying Spider-Man 3 was crap. They want crap? We’ll give them CRAP!”

  • Rush

There should be a law in Hollywood: “No franchise should may be rebooted until at least 20 years have passed since the last installment of a series.”

    • Rush

      Remove “should”.

      • Rush

        The second one.

  • John Davis

    Wha..huh?
