That’s what the new posters for the Coen brothers’ remake of the classic John Wayne Western appear to be saying. They seem to belong not on the walls of your local cineplex, but pinned up on a cactus with a Bowie knife. The three men — Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin — look appropriately mangy, even if they did wrangle their outfits from Johnny Cash’s wardrobe. In fact — and perhaps it’s just the subliminal effect of Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” humming throughout Grit‘s trailer — these posters are evocative of Cash’s album covers. Even the font says “Man in Black.” I reckon that’s not an accident.
Take a good look at Hailee Steinfeld and these grizzled characters, and tell me what classic Cash song best speaks to their individual characters. Bridges makes me think of “The Man Comes Around.”
