U.S. Senate takes up bill combatting illegal downloading

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee announced today it had unanimously approved a bill giving the Justice Department new powers to combat websites that illegally offer copyrighted content for sale, download, or streaming. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act, sponsored by Senators Patrick Leahy (D, Vt.) and Orrin Hatch (R, Utah), would allow federal law enforcement to effectively shut down websites that demonstrably participate in the regular unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material. Several Hollywood guild organizations, including SAG and the DGA, issued a joint-statement in support of the bill, saying, “We believe today’s committee action is the first step in making it much more difficult for rogue site operators to run their sites with impunity.”

I would like a team assembled to investigate EW’s obsession with Glee and Twilight.

Why is this such an issue? Why is so much effort used to punish Americans rather than help them?

    • jj

Stopping illegal downloading is punishing Americans? hahah

      • KM

Yes, you fool. Music is therapeutic. If you don’t think so, you’ve got serious issues.

Ugh. See, and no one pays attention when some of us complain that government only cares about rich businesses. Who is this going to benefit besides the wealthy studios and production companies? I’m not saying we should be downloading material without paying, but I’d say it’s a pretty small issue that doesn’t do anything to benefit the individual citizen. Just keeps helps wealthy studios make more and more on top of their multi-millions.

this will help the numerous bands that need income from every avenue they can get it. not everyone out on the road and touring is part of a “multi-million dollar production company or studio”. got a problem with the way those business’s operate……don’t buy their product.

    • Greg

I run an independent record store and this will help me! but not only me the record industry is a business that employs hundreds of thousands of people yes the big bands make millions but what about the janitors that work in the building or the delivery people that take the cds to the stores or the artists that designs the cover art?

Look I am not saying that there aren’t bigger problems out in the world that congress could be dealing with, but this is STEALING. No matter what you call it or who is or is not hurt by this, it is STEALING. Do we want to live in a society where theft is okay? No one wants their purse or car stolen. If you steal from large corporations it is still wrong.

  • John Davis

Its against the law and they are enforcing the law.

    • Rolo Tomasi

Can’t enforce U.S. Law on other countries, the best they can do is put pressure on U.S. Internet providers

They should be investing in live music and merchandise. Music should be free, they should pay for it with performances. If a recording artist is a shitty performer, they shouldn’t have recording contracts. But the kids are what drive this business, they’re the fans, and a good majority of them are too young or underemployed to pay $18/album just to hear a new artist’s work. Recording companies should GIVE them away, then focus on the millions they make on everything other than album sales.

It is documented (Paul McGuiness-Rolling Stone) that 95% of all music downloads are illegal. As an Independant music maker, I urge you to consider how you would be affected if your income was cut by 95%. Thank you USA for setting the standards.

    • clay

that other 5% is fair usage anybody remember fair usage

  • Genaro Brinsfield

    good job on this..

i am not saying STEALING is good ether but if this bill passes no more you tube you do realize that right. Don’t be dumb music should be free its the live concerts that make the real $ not so much the cds. Even if you don’t care for you tube look at it this way anything that streams or allows for dl any type of content will have illegal content in it no matter what. Come on the middle schoolers know this. This bill will get shot down fast because well The USA cannot police the world and if this bill passes then the us economy will go down real quick because sites like you tube are huge in advertising now and believe it or not people will by stuff based on what they see if they don’t see it how can they buy it. Their just doing this bill as a favor to the entertainment business who helped in their campaigns for funding that is the real reason they put this bill up as a thank you to the entertainment business for their funding of them in office and most of the money in that entertainment field the average person does not see a penny from it so their all just benefiting them selves when they already have a lambo and a zonda and now they just want more so they can get the mansion. Come on people think past words and imagination a wold with out any illegal internet i mean fruity loops studio and reason by propeller head costs like 400$ a piece sorry not paying that rip time. And look at all these 50+ dollar games that their are like people aren’t going to find a way to crack theses programs and release them on the net for others who are working dead end jobs because of the government or other events that may have transpired. like by the time i am 60 their will be no SS for me to collect it will be dried up because all the hands in the government grabbing at it that’s what they should be really focusing on. Stuff like unemployment and families who cant feed their own children. I would love it if they would actually do something use full to the country like come up with a bill to ensure that your Social Security is your money and it will be given back or just do away with it and let me build my own retirement fund dang.

What I would like to know is seeing that US Government has shut down Megaupload and Megavideo who will be refunding my money that I paid them to have the right to download whatever I could if it had been posted on their website. The way that I see it you have now taken over the responsibility of this company there for you should be refunding all monies that everyone around the World has paid for the legal right to use their website. I will be taking this to my Federal Member of Parliament because I had paid in good faith for the use of this website and now you have taken this away from me and many other people just here in Australia. If this company broke any US laws that does not give you the right shut me out from what I have paid for, your Government just goes around and does what it likes and forgets that you are not the only Country in the World and you could be breaching other Countries laws but what you have done. I would like a response from you regarding this ASAP as I will be seeking legal advice to have a full refund of what I have paid out in good faith. Yours R. J. Harris from Adelaide South Australia.
