Image Credit: Jaap BuitendijkIt was a Thanksgiving feast for the teenage wizard, as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 led the box office on Thursday by engulfing $11.5 million, according to early estimates. That result brings the PG-13 fantasy film’s seven-day gross to $170 million. Not far behind on Thanksgiving, and performing stronger than expected, was Disney’s animated musical Tangled, which earned $8.1 million. The PG-rated retelling of Rapunzel should continue to thrive during the weekend thanks to excellent word-of-mouth — CinemaScore audiences rated it a rare “A+”. The two family-friendly movies also dominated the box office on Wednesday, with Deathly Hallows grossing an estimated $14.5 million and Tangled snaring $11.6 million. Thanksgiving Day results are below. Check back tomorrow for a full recap of Friday’s numbers, which should provide a clearer picture of how the weekend will unfold.
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 — $11.5 mil
2. Tangled — $8.1 mil
3. Unstoppable — $2.53 mil
4. Burlesque — $2.5 mil
5. Megamind — $2.0 mil
6. Love and Other Drugs — $1.93 mil
7. Faster — $1.91 mil
Box office preview: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to lead Thanksgiving weekend

Going to the movies is better than listening to your drunk uncle talk religion around the table I guess.
My exact family except exchange religion for aliens and underground cities.
Who watches this crap?? Oh yeah idiots like all of you pigs.
love this
Amen to that!
Glad to see both films doing well. Also hope that HP7 gets a five-day total of $80M+.
It says the 7 day total in the article. 170 million.
I don’t know if I would call HP7 a “family-friendly movie”. I don’t think I’d recommend taking younger kids to see it.
Good point…i’d say it’s for 11+
Actual overheard conversation between 8-year-old girl and mom, post-HP7:
Mom: You weren’t scared by the snake?
Girl: NO! I wasn’t scared at all!
I was thinking the same thing! This one definitely made me jump a couple times. But then, maybe the darkest stuff is going over the kids’ heads anyways.
I’d say 13+.
Agreed, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping people. I work in retail and I heard one mother telling her kids that if they behave then they will go see Harry Potter today…she had three kids with her and none of them were over the age of 11.
This movie scared the crap out of me on certain parts and I’m in my 20s.
I really want to see Tangled on Christmas weekend (I’ll be very busy over the next few weeks). Hopefully it will have a Princess & the Frog-style run and still be playing at my theater around that time.
I saw tangled today with 4 and 5-year-old nieces. It was OK – not bad but not great. Seemed like a re-tread of a lot of other animated films.
Yeah I saw HP for the second time yesterday lol
Where are the Harry Potter fans who jumped down my throat after I said Tangled was going to do better than expected? Where are they?
I am one of the biggest Harry Potter fans around and I have no problem with how well Tangled did. I personally want to see it soon but for now I will opt to see Harry Potter for the fourth time. Congrats to both films, they both will probably make it into my top films.
They’re laughing all the way to the bank.
Huh? That doesn’t make any sense. Harry Potter fans don’t get any money for the movie being successful.
I’m an HP fan…and I’m not shocked by Tangled at all. The highest grossing movie of 2010 (so far) is an animated film. I think Tangled will do very well; however, I don’t think a lot of little boys are going to want to see it.
Looks like Potter will beat Tangled this weekend, too bad since Tangled is a far better film than the last 3 Harry Potters combined.
No it’s not
Um.. HELL NO
Too right you are Sara!
It’s better than the most recent one, but not better than the two before it.
its not better than any of the HP films, not even close!
I don’t know who is worse Twilight fans or HP fans both are way overhyped and the fans act like they are the best things to hit the movies.
NOT! Don’t lump us all into the same category. Not true.
I agree with Liz Lemon. But even if one would argue that the movies of HP are generally sub-par, 1) the books really are great, and 2) the movies still are better in general production quality than most, especially the latest one.
ALL twilight movies have gotten rotten ratings on rotten tomatoes, while ALL Harry Potter films are fresh. Just saying.
@Woot: And that is relevant, how?
I haven’t watched Potter, but I did watch Tangled, and I would gladly pay to watch Tangled again rather than to see Harry Potter 7.
You’re SO missing out, cause Deathly Hallows was definitely better.
But even so, the two films are totally different.
Deathly Hallows part 1 is nothing more than a 2 hour prelude to the finale, at least something actually happens in Tangled.
Did you even see HP7? PLENTY happened, I assure you!
I think Sara has a wizard fetish!!!!
So you have no point of reference. Maybe you should broaden your horizons.
LMFAO! Are people actually comparing HP to an animated movie now? I swear that series just can’t win. If it’s not being compared to LOTR, then it’s Narnia, then it’s twilight, now it’s an animated movie. Makes no sense at all. You CAN like more than you thing you know. Jeez! I love HP and I plan on seeing Tangled and Megamind, because both of those look better than some of the live action movies that have come out this year. It’s been a pretty crappy year for movies, so all the good ones (Tangled, Megamind, HP7, etc) deserve all the love they can get.
wow… The people hating on HP7 are just pathetic.
The two films are totally different- why the hate?
I know! These two films are different…paaaalllleeeeaaaaasssseeee people! Harry and his friends are friggen grown up….why would you take children if this is obviously common sense duh! Harry Potter is EPIC and is J.K’s gift to literature!
The Rock’s Faster movie looks to be a massive bomb.
Just saw Love and Other Drugs – really enjoyed it; I did nt think I was shockable any more this movie proved me wrong!!
I saw both tangled and HP 7 in the past two days and enjoyed both thoroughly. Tangled is beautiful addition to Disney’s catalog and the two main characters are wonderful. And I think HP 7.1 was a great adoption of the book, can’t wait for part 2. I don’t understand the hate for either film in the comments, because as people have pointed out…the two films are just completely different, why bother to compare or argue?
Sorry, didn’t mean to reply under this, as you were talking about love and other drugs. My phone is idiotic.;)
Love and Other Drugs was funny, sad, romantic. Really enjoyed Anne and Jake
How much of Deathly Hallows is repeat business? You’ve got to be the Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons to want to see this film more than once in a movie theater.
Then that makes me the comic book guy.
Tangled is such an awesome movie, one of the highlights of the year for me. HP7 is disappointing but fine.
And your comparison of the two is relevant, because….
Because people-like me-are trying to spend their money wisely at the movies and care about other peoples’ opinions. And seriously, which one of you is which?
I don’t get all the love for Tangled. I found it mediocre at best.
