Robert Downey Jr.’s spokesperson confirms to EW that the actor has signed on for an untitled Warner Bros. musical about a couple of Broadway songwriters who end up taking a job at theater camp when their breakthrough musical flops. The film’s music will be written by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, the Pulitzer and Tony-winning team behind Broadway musicalĀ Next to Normal. Susan Downey, Downey’s wife, will produce.

RDJ can definitely sing. I have his album “The Futurist”, and the songs are somewhat forgettable, but his voice is undeniable.

    • Michael

No kidding! Is there anything this man can’t do?!

  • JPX

God, is there anything worse than a musical? Just make Iron Man 3 already, no one wants to see you break out into song. Sigh.

    • Phil

JPX, please say “I don’t want to” instead of “no one wants to”. You do not speak for the majority of Robert Downey Jr’s fans. Do not forget that Iron Man’s next appereance will be in the “Avengers”, written and directed by the very successful creator of the MUSICAL “Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”, Joss Whedon.

Would that be the same Joss Whedon whose only big screen film, Serenity, based on a ratings flop, was a major box office flop? The same Whedon whose last TV show, Dollhouse, was a critically-fragmentary ratings flop? The same Whedon whose only “successful” properties were two marginal TV genre cult hits that never reached a mainstream audience? That doesn’t sound to me like “The very successful” anything….

I wouldn’t call “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” a marginal genre cult hit. Did you know that linguistics scholars actually study one of the show’s episodes because it explores communication without language? Did you know that “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog” has actually won awards–and real awards too (such as the Creative Emmys), not the Teen Choice Awards by which your standards are based? Did you know that Joss Whedon wrote, and was nominated an Academy Award for, the original “Toy Story”? Yes, “the same Whedon whose only ‘successful’ properties were two marginal TV genre cult hits that never reached a mainstream audience? Better luck researching next time.

Joss Whedon is a fantastic director that’s cares about quality rather than immediate financial success, and he won’t let The Avengers down.

      • Chris

The only reason why Firefly and Dollhouse didn’t go mainstream was because the idiots who showed the shows put them in the friday night death slots. But that’s not all. With firefly, they scrambled the order so you didn’t understand what was going on.

Buffy has been taught in college because it precisely reached a niche audience of college pseudo-intellectuals who geeked out over the crappy histrionics that Whedon came up with. But it was still a marginal cult hit, it never reached a huge audience, and in fact, many Whedon fans criticized Universal’s decision to place “From The Creator Of Buffy” at the start of Serenity’s trailers…mainstream audiences, NON-Geeks had no clue as to who or what the hell is/was “buffy”, and they still do. Whedon has never, ever had a big hit. And Toy Story? He was a co-writer, one of the tons of people who revised the script. At the end of the day, nobody in the industry thinks of Joss Whedon as “Oscar-nominated CO-writer of Toy Story” All he’s remembered for (if at all) is as “that dude who did that show about the vampire-killing cheerleader, right? And that flop Space-Cowboys film?”
      LOL

Well, Toni, you certainly have a right to your opinion. However, isn’t it ironic that it is thanks to people who are “geeks” that you are able to come to this forum and talk about them as objects of your derision?

      • Prunella Von Schleidlhaagen

Toni, you don’t get out on the internet much do you?

  • Tom

I can think of something worse than a musical, and it’s called Iron Man 3.

    • Stormy

Please, could Jude Law or Hugh Jackman be the songwriting partner?

    • Evelyn

I can’t think of many things worse than Iron Man 3: Serenity, Dollhouse, Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. Whedon is a hack that always has the same characters in everything he does. And making lame jokes to boot.

  • rebecca

Ever since May 2nd 2008 I have decided to watch every single Robert Downey Jr movie since then, so I will definitely be watching this one.
But you don’t really need to put that Susan Downey will produce the movie, ever since Iron Man, she has produced all of his movies and I am sure she will always produce his movies.

  • Jose

Why can’t they make a film version of “Next to Normal” instead?

    • Jason

Reports just came out that Rob Reiner is interested in just that…

  • derek

I was just thinking the other day that he would be perfect for Dr. Frankenfurter in the Rocky Horror remake. I wish that was the musical he had signed on for.

    • mtraptor

Oh god, he would be PERFECT.

    • lulu

That’s inspired. You should totally run a movie studio. And when you do, can you be a dear and greenlight Anchorman 2 for me?

  • Josh

Soooo its like a combination of ‘Camp’ and ‘The Producers’?

  • Liz

Such a talented guy. I’m still in awe of his work in Chaplin. I’m sure that movie will be great.

  • MCS

God that is an awful, awful photo of him.

    • filmboymichael

and i thought just the opposite and thought ‘man, what a yummy photo of him….he looks great!”

      • Stormy

I don’t think it’s awful. It just looks more like the guy that won America’s Got Talent than it does Robert Downey Jr.

      • uh

        Michael Grimm

  • Evie

I love musicals and I love him! I will definitely be seeing this!

  • Marianne

This could be very interesting. I think I’m sold on him being in a musical.

I would love to see next JGL or Ryan Gosling in a musical.

  • stickittotheman

Musicals are an underappreciated genre. I have introduced my kids to them via Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. But, something more recent would be fun. I just hope it is more colorful in the Vincent Minelli vein, rather than the dark, stripped down Chicago/Fosse kind.

    • erin

shut your mouth! Fosse was brilliant

      • Beepela

I don’t think they said Fosse wasn’t brilliant, just dark, and not what they want to show to their children. Calm down.

  • kim in kentucky

I remember him singing on Ally McBeal – pretty good!

  • cultural ignoramous

I wonder if Carol Burnett will be in this film?

  • really ?

I think we are witnessing a well-known fact. Once an actor / actress is ” hot ” they are everywhere. EVERYWHERE. I take my hat off to RD, especially for turning his life / carrier around . Back then, he was like a male version of LL. Still, he should choose wisely, what kind of a role he wants to do. Too much stretching is dangerous . I’ve just read , Anne Rice would be happy to see RJ playing Lestat in a remake of a movie from her book. Her other preference for Louis is Matt Boomer. Boomer is a bull’s eye hit, but seriously, RD is not. Not even close to the description of Lestat. My choice would be Aleksander Skarsgard. Any thoughts ?

    • Yup

Bomer not Boomer. Bomer is a zoomer, not a Boomer.

      • really ?

Sorry, you are correct, it was a mistake. I should know by now, since I was watching him in White collar s/1 & s/2. He’s awesome.A perfect Louis de Pointe du Lac.
