Box office preview: 'Chronicles of Narnia' takes on Depp and Jolie in 'The Tourist'

Chronicles-of-NarniaImage Credit: Phil BrayAfter last week’s deadly results, the box office will thankfully be injected with some fresh energy this weekend. For one thing, Narnia is happenin’. Fox is releasing The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third film adapted from C.S. Lewis’ beloved series of fantasy novels. Aslan the Lion will be facing off against two of Hollywood’s biggest cash cows, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, in Sony’s romantic thriller The Tourist. The victor should easily be Narnia, but the real test will be whether the $140 million film can make enough in the long run to convince Fox and Walden Media to finance a fourth Narnia movie. My weekend predictions:

1. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader: $40 million

Will 3-D and Narnia equal crazy delicious? (Okay, sorry, ending 5-year-old SNL reference now.) Disney abandoned the series after 2008′s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian grossed “only” $141.6 million domestically (and $419.7 million worldwide). By comparison, the first entry, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe converted $291.7 million stateside, and $745 million worldwide. It’s hard to know whether the series, which Fox is now distributing, is trapped in a downward spiral or not. Or maybe all of the Narnia sequels will simply earn around the same amount as Prince Caspian. I’m opting for a slight spiral in which Dawn Treader debuts to $40 million. (Wardrobe tallied $65.6 million when it opened the same weekend in 2005, and Prince Caspian premiered to $55 million). The PG movie should then play well throughout the rest of the holiday season, especially as Fox continues to court Christian audiences.

2. The Tourist: $22 million

One would think pairing Johnny Depp with Angelina Jolie would automatically ignite box-office fireworks. But The Tourist isn’t tracking nearly as well as Dawn Treader, and the PG-13 Venetian thriller, a remake of the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer, has so far received tepid reviews. Ultimately, the film will likely perform much better overseas, where Depp and Jolie’s names will be even bigger selling points, and where Oscar-winning director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (whose full name is Florian Maria Georg Christian Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck) is better-known. Here in America, expect an opening of about $22 million — modest, but nothing to sneeze at.

3. Tangled: $13 million

Dawn Treader will steal some of Tangled‘s family audience, as well as many of its 3-D screens. But, again, audiences truly love this animated musical’s happily-ever-after sheen, so a slide of about 40 percent seems about right. Tangled will cross the $100 million mark today and finish the weekend with about $114 million.

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1: $9 million

Harry can only hold on for so long, and with the emergence of another fantasy epic in Dawn Treader, the PG-13 film will probably fall just under 50 percent this weekend. Deathly Hallows should hit $250 million domestically on Friday.

5. Burlesque: $3.5 million

Fifth place should be a rematch of last week’s battle for third place, where the Cher-Christina Aguilera musical Burlesque surprisingly beat out the Denzel Washington action thriller Unstoppable — by less than $200,000. I think Burlesque will barely trump Unstoppable once again. The former has been kicking around in third place throughout the workweek, while the latter’s been parked in fifth place.

In limited release, David O. Russell’s boxing drama, The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, enters the ring at four theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. And Julie Taymor’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest unfolds in five theaters.

I originally wanted to see The Tourist since I’m a huge fan of Johnny Depp, but the trailer honestly didn’t make it look that appealing. I’d still like to see it, but I think I may just wait for DVD.
Looking forward to seeing Narnia. I hope Voyage of the Dawn Treader is better than Prince Caspian, which kinda disappointed me. This one looks better though.
Most of all, I’m excited to see Black Swan, which is finally being released near me. Can’t wait!

Prince Caspian was more than disappointing to me; I felt like it abandoned the spirit of the book, resorting to romance and action instead of character development. I hope Number Three is better!

      • amanda

I loved the movie, except for the romance stuff. Aside from it not being in the book, it felt totally forced and fake.

  • Butters

I’m going to see The Tourist no matter what. :) )

I saw Narnia already and its very good! Disney made a mistake by rejecting it, I also hope it makes good money so they make the next book into a movie too.

its a mistake to watch narnia3 in theatres, it might be nice in 3d but not in 2d

  • m1

I was really looking forward to The Tourist, but those reviews are scaring me away. DVD it is.

And of course, go Black Swan!!!

  • Larry David

I think the #1 movie this weekend will be The Walking Dead. You mean. it’s only a TV show? Sorry about that. I am a zombie after all! Mmmm…brains.

  • Andrew

There’s a chance “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” could open higher than $40 million. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” opened with $65 million when bo office analysits predicted it would open with $50 million.

  • jasmine

i usually care about what the reviews say, but there is no way i am not going to see the tourist.its johnny depp and angelina jolie in one movie together!! i’ve been waiting for this to come out since last year and i’m so excited!!

    • Tarc

The trailer makes the movie look like a total snoozefest. I hadn’t heard of the film, and after seeing the trailer, I doubt I’ll even watch it on DVD.

    • Lisa Simpson

I believe the next Narnia movie is already being made.

  • PAUL

I hate reviews, the critic never likes nothing.I want decide if The tourist is good or not.Around the world The touris will be sucess

  • Sith Lord J

Where is Black swan on list? However if I have a Lazy Sunday I might see the Chronic WHAT les of Narnia.

    • erin

The Black Swan is not opening wide yet.

I remember Salt , most believed less 100 million box office and Salt did 118 million USA and total around the would 293 million

    • Bradd bradd

most believed SALT would perform at the level it did… the marketing campeign was strong, the action sequences looked great it got good reviews and it had anjelina jolie in the same type of movie that she found success with in mr. and mrs. smith and Wanted. I do think the tourist will do welll in the long run. I don’t care baout reviews either, it’s depp and jolie.

  • tipsy

Black Swan expension is all that matters. Best movie of the year.

  • duncan

    Narnia… better then the bible

  • lindsey

The Tourist is getting tepid reviews? According to Rotten Tomatoes it is at 15% and top critics rating is at 6%. That’s not tepid. More like brutal.

    • Liz Lemon

Narnia didn’t go over so well with the critics either. It has a 47%. The last one was a huge letdown, so I’m not looking forward to the new one.

  • JoeC

I too thought I’d go to see ‘The Tourist’ but those reviews have me thinking twice about it. Then again, the critics hated the Da Vinci code too, and I loved that movie. We’ll see…

    • REASON

lots of times I love movies that critics hate, but in this case The Tourist just doesn’t look very good. I am in the minority not succeptable to Jolie’s charms, or lack thereof.

      • toodles

I’m the same way. I’m not a Jolie fan. Her presence in a movie is likely to keep me from a film but I’ll see a film with her in it if the subject matter looks great. I made that mistake most recently with the mediocre Changeling. Anyway, b/c people hyped the Depp/Jolie pairing I thought I might see The Tourist, but the trailers are lame. It looks so conventional and dull. Like Duplicity w/ Julia Roberts and Clive Owen (that was a disappointment IMO).

  • Tarc

Franky, they changed so much of Prince Caspian (and in pointless, nonsensical ways), it’s really no surprise that it was much less popular (as it was a much inferior film). Dawn Treader is by all reports much closer to the book, and should do better – and the reviewers are going well out of their way to mention that, and the fact it’s just a better story.

    • Louise

YES, thank you! Prince Caspian was shoddily made. I had to reread the book to wipe the movie from my brain!

      • Andrew

“Prince Caspain” was a mess. There was no night battle at Mirza’s Castle, no rivalry between Caspain and Peter, and no romance between Susan and Caspain.
