According to Deadline, Firth would play a cat burglar who attempts to rob a billionaire with the help of a woman who looks like the rich man’s dead wife. The remake of the 1966 British film, starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, was written by a twosome also fielding Academy Awards buzz for their upcoming True Grit: Joel and Ethan Coen.

When I first read the headline, I got all excited…and curious: “There’s going to be a movie about Gambit? Awesome! Also, Colin Firth! But wait, he can’t play Remy, so who–” *clicks link, reads article*–”…oh.” Still, sounds like an interesting premise (even if it is yet another remake)–and yay, Colin Firth!

I had the same reaction! I want to see more of Gambit in an X-Men movie than we did in Origins: Wolverine. Maybe someday….

I did the same thing! I thought ” What? He’s too old to play Gambit.”

Well, True Grit’s a remake too…and so was Ben-Hur. It all depends on who’s making the movie.

I know–my late uncle was a big John Wayne fan, and that was one of his favorites. I have no problem with remakes in themselves, it’s just that there seems to be *so many* nowadays. Remakes, reboots, prequels and sequels (in 3D!)

Part of the reason for so many remakes is lack of good original material. Another might be that in the early days of Hollywood, there was a centuries long stockpile of literature to draw from. Now, a hundred years later most everything has been done at least once.

I figured it had to be a movie with a title similar to the “X-Men” character, but then I thought that, hey, he could be playing a villain… Damn.

I’m with you. Two of my favorite actors, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, born one day apart. Who says there’s no truth in astrology?
