Academy announces 248 films eligible for 2010 Best Picture Oscar

The Academy Awards announced Monday that a total of 248 films are eligible to win the 2010 Best Picture Oscar. The number has decreased over the past two years: In 2009, 274 were eligible, while 281 made the cut in 2008. Like last year, 10 films will be nominated for Best Picture. Read Dave Karger’s predictions of who will make the cut here.

I am not an Oscar expert, so this question might seem stupid. But what makes a movie eligible or not?

    • musiqluvr

Not a stupid question, I’m curious about eligibility as well. Is it any film screened in a theater in the US during the eligibility period? What about straight to video releases? EW – as a reputable journalistic resource for all things entertainment I would have expected you to provide a little more information. What’s really newsworthy about the number of films eligible if its just a number?

      • SirLizard

I agree. I would have expected this four-sentence article to include at least a few words about the requirements for eligibility. Is one more sentence, especially a very pertinent and informative one, too much for readers to ask for? If I’d merely posted this topic on my blog or on my Facebook page, even knowing that I only have a handful of readers, I still would not have been able to bring myself to hit the “Post” button without first including the eligibility information.

If you are not able to complete 400m with rest in 7 meiutns scale the distance back. You should not be adding time to the interval. Yes, people will be going on different intervals based on their experiences w/swimming and ability to maintain proper mechanics for 400m. A faster swimmer will use a faster interval than 7 meiutns. 7 meiutns was high end of the suggested interval. The athlete decides on the amount of rest while setting their interval.

Yeah, I’d like to know more about how this works as well.

To be eligible for 83rd Academy Awards® consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.

Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category.

Go to Oscars.org It explains everything on how the films are selected.

  • jay

the movie has to have been screened in LA for it to be eligible… thats one fact i learned on those trivia questions before the movie in the theater

For Stamina (tempo and time trial) you should be wknoirg on building from about 10 minutes to 90 .. Any thoughts on how I should build up my stamina? Start with 10minutes first week and then just add an extra 10minutes every week, or is that too much? Maby 10,15,20,25minutes ??And should I add some distance goals now and then, like 5k or 5M?

  • Pablo

A movie must play for 7 days in Los Angeles within the calendar year to qualify (this is why a lot of movies open on Christmas day in LA: it gives exactly seven days before the end of the year). Also, it must have premiered in theaters (not a theater in LA, just theaters in general) before internet or television. If it appeared on television or the internet before it premiered in theaters, it is ineligible.

    • Quirky

Interesting. Does that apply for the best foreign film category as well?

      • Alexandra

I don’t know all the details when it comes to the foreign film category but I do know that each country that wants to participate submits 1 film to represent their country. From there the some group of the voting academy members, I don’t think it’s all of them, watch somewhere around 60 films and from that select the 5 nominees for best foreign language film.

      • Jonty

That’s a little different. Every country can put forward one film only, and these are all shown in LA at some point. I think every Academy member is invited to watch them and set out the shortlist, but I doubt they all do…

      • Woot

Once the nominations have been announced, any member can vote for the foreign language film. BUT in order to vote they have to have seen all five nominees at academy screenings. Thats why Foreign language film (i think this rule applies to documentary as well…not sure) winner is usually the most deserving. I wish they made this a rule for Best Picture.

      • Pablo

Each country can submit one film. Also, every person credited with working on the film must be from the country of submission. It does not need to show in LA within the calendar year to qualify for Foreign Language Film, only for the other categories; however, it does need to show for seven days within a one year period in the country of submission. Note that it is not a strict calendar year, however. The deadline varies, but the period typically runs from early October to late September.

This is why sometimes films are nominated for Foreign Language Film one year, but then other broader categories in a different year; for instance Amarcord, which won Best Foreign Language Film one year, but was then nominated for Best Director the following year after it showed in LA.

Also, the rules restricting eligible films from employing those outside the submitting country means many films, such as Kieslowski’s Red, are deemed ineligible for an award they likely would have won, yet the film can still be nominated in other categories, as in the case of Red, which received directing, writing and cinematography nominations.

I was kinda hoping for a link to the full list of the eligible films. But to be eligible, I think a film has to be released in New York and LA during the calendar year, excluding foreign film nominees for last year, which are ineligible even if they didn’t get a US theatrical release until 2010. Or, something like that.

  • Tom

    Is Yogi Bear eligible?

    • chloe

      God, I hope not.

    • Jennifer

It was disqualified from the animated catergory. It didn’t have quite enough CGI. As far as best picture, it sadly probably was technically eligible.

    • MsSuniDaze

Well, he is smarter than the average bear.

  • Woot

I mean this barely matters… 8-9 of the films that are going to be nominated are pretty much set in stone. (Black Swan, Inception, Toy Story 3, True Grit, The Fighter, The King’s Speech, Winter’s Bone, The Social Network)

  • Tori

I would imagine the 10 will be Black Swan, Inception, True Grit, The Fighter, Winter’s Bone, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech and The Kids Are All Right.

    • Tori

My bad I forgot 127 hours probably

  • Liz Lemon

If it’s ten again, I think the following will get nominations:
    Black Swan
    The Kids are All Right
    Toy Story 3
    True Grit
    Blue Valentine
    The Social Network
    127 Hours
    The Town
    Winter’s Bone
    The King’s Speech

  • Jack Rabbit Slims and Buddy Buscemi

I’d add Rabbit Hole and Somewhere to that list of probabilities.

  • Ryan F

There are 11 films and 10 slots for me
