Box office update: 'Little Fockers' comes in first at $7.2 million on Wednesday, but 'True Grit' does better than expected

Little-Fockers-Stiller_320.jpg Image Credit: Glen Wilson As we thought it would, Little Fockers focked over the rest of the competition on Wednesday, coming in at the top spot but still pulling in under expectations with only $7.2 million, according to early estimates. Maybe last-minute reshoots, Dustin Hoffman being added in post-production, and pretty uniformly unenthusiastic reviews affected people’s desire to see Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro awkwardly battle each other for a third time. The comedy will have to perform very well throughout the rest of the elongated weekend in order to meet Universal’s predictions. It almost certainly won’t do as well as Meet the Fockers, which opened in nearly identical conditions six years ago and ended up raking in over $70 million for the full Christmas weekend.

Those using the box-office battle of True Grit vs. Little Fockers as a referendum on America’s cultural future should take some hope: The Coen Brothers Western performed above expectations, managing a healthy $5.5 million, placing it just below TRON: Legacy, which is now in its second week. The neon-techno blockbuster sequel managed to keep its light-bikes going strong, and its cumulative gross is now up to $62 million. Without a doubt, the final month of 2010 belongs to Jeff Bridges.

Rounding out the last two spots in Wednesday’s top five are family films Yogi Bear and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader with $2.9 and $2.5 million, respectively. After another expansion, Black Swan continues to dance its crazed pas de deux of success, hitting No. 7 and pulling its total take so far past the $20 million mark.

1. Little Fockers: $7.2 mil

2. TRON: Legacy: $5.6  mil

3. True Grit: $5.5 mil

4. Yogi Bear: $2.9  mil

5. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader: $2.5  mil

Wow. Great for True Grit and Black Swan. Undeserved for Little Fockers. Anyway, nice job, Jeff Bridges.

    • LOL

America loves crap. Why do people spend their money on Fockers?

      • Emma

Because the last one was funny. And Ben Stiller is pretty great in these films. Plus, who doesn’t love Robert de Niro?

      • couchgrouch

truth is, 95% of DeNiro’s movies are terrible including the Focker sequels.

      • Andy

        Really, 95%?

      • Rich

Only within the last 15 years. Nearly everything DeNiro did from Mean Streets through Goodfellas is genius.

Bulwinkle is where it all goes terribly, terribly wrong.

    • TJ S.

      Completely agree!

  • Andrew

Maybe people are getting tired of Greg, AKA Gilligan from “Gilligan’s Island,” messing up all the time.

    • Stacey Hearts

I love Bobby dinero and DisabledSocialNetwork was amazing

  • Lt. Riggs

    FOCK! I hate these movies!

    • sorella

Me too!! I cringe in embarassment that good actors like Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman do this crap!! I also cringe in embarrassment for the Americans who love these movies!!

  • Jay

For very dollar made by a Fockers movie, God kills a puppy. The blood is on your hands, America!

    • mike

      Ouch!

    • Lasie

I can’t wait to see little fockers, hopefully my $12.00 bucks will get 2 puppies dead…

      • whatevs

If your comment passes as humor to you, it doesn’t surprise me you can’t wait to see that movie.

  • Jay

“every dollar”. Darn my inability to type quickly!

    • m1

Darn your inability to be tasteful, too.

      • cc

Wait… You expect the comments section in an article for a movie called “Little Fockers” to be TASTEFUL??? Hello?

      • m1

@cc: I was talking about the “God kills a puppy” comment. I don’t want Little Fockers to be #1 either, but really?

      • Jason

God kills puppies every day. And kittens and grandmas and…

      • Lasie

        LMAO

      • StewyFan

Jason, I am dying laughing at you right now … and its so wrong.

Going to be a big weekend at the box office for Little Fockers, Tron and True Grit. I knew True Grit was going to hit big with men. Keith, I think Disney is going to have the last laugh with Tron. People were calling it a failure last weekend but its on a roll and not slowing down. I think the top three movies could all do well over 30 million each this weekend. We’ll see!

    • m

with men? excuse me? this is why this society is dumbing down. I’m female and the movie I wanted see all year is True Grit and I have never seen a Twilight movie so stop putting peopple into boxes. I like good movies and not chick flicks

    • nina

Tron’s success? Really? Tron is pulling numbers similar to the Last Airbender; Disney was hoping for over 600million worldwide, to make some profit&while local numbers are sort of OK (definetely not what the studio hoped for) it did really bad globally, pulling only 23million on 26markets opening weekend; man, it even did poorly in Japan!!! For a film that cost 300million dollars…those numbers are bad!

      • JC

Tron: Legacy cost $170 million to make, not 300.

  • fred

you all need a double dose of focker.

  • mARK hALL

TRON’s success does not surprise me; but, why the Coen Brothers didn’t make TRUE GRIT in 3D does. The FOCK films, though, are perfect for taking annoying visiting relatives to see.

    • m

Because no movie in 3-D is any good and they wanted to make an actually good movie not crap

  • T. Davis

The reason people go see films like Fockers, Tron and True Grit is because they are on overload with bad news and want to escape. That’s what movies have been since the beginning. Escapism. If you want reality watch the news.

  • Larry David

These movies are all crap. No black people movies though this weekend, i guess that’s good.

    • Justin

      What’s that supposed to mean?

      • Larry David

It means no black people movies…that’s good, because those movies just suck as do black people.

  • Matthew

I saw Little Fockers and was very dissapointed even though the reviews were horrible. It wasn’t that funny and alot of the jokes fell flat. Meet The Fockers was hilarious but it looks like a classic compared to this one.

  • JT

    This makes me so sad.

  • Sue

Meet the Parents was classic. Meet the Fockers was good. Even if bad reviews plague Little Fockers, I will still see it to see the cast. Amazing amount of star power looking like they are all enjoying themselves.

  • Zee

Go out ans see Black Swan asap! Best movie I’ve seen all year, squirm-in-your-seat nail-biting…

  • Zee

Go out and see Black Swan asap! Best movie I’ve seen all year, squirm-in-your-seat nail-biting…Dvd Screener torrents all over the interwebs too. Portman should easily win Best Actress imo.
