Nominations for the Writers Guild Awards won’t be announced until Jan. 4, but the nomination ballot is missing some noticeable titles. Variety reports Another Year, Biutiful, Blue Valentine, The Ghost Writer, The King’s Speech, Made in Dagenham, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Toy Story 3 and Winter’s Bone are among those deemed ineligible because they were not formally submitted for consideration and/or were not produced under WGA jurisdiction. As the trade notes, the WGA’s picks for original and adapted screenplay have each won an Oscar 11 of the last 16 years. Winners are announced Feb. 5.

Their rules are so stupid.
I love that Scott Pilgrim is mentioned in the same sentence with the Oscar bait. I am not sarcastic. I love that movie with all my heart.
I love that Toy Story 3 and Blue Valentine are mentioned in the title and The King’s Speech is not, esp. since The King’s Speech is the one hardest hit by the ineligibility. When is EW going to stop trying to pimp Blue Valentine so hard? Other than Gosling and Williams, the film has no chance at any Oscar nods. Get over it already, EW!!!
I guess no one loves Scott Pilgrim, do they? Even “Furry Vengeance” was nominated for one of these awards, and yet the best film of the year and a cult classic were just skipped over.
It hurts.

Gone But Never Forgotten
Furry Vengeance was not nominated it is just eligible.
“Furry Vengence” should not even have been eligible for screening. Fortunately I slept through most of my son’s 9th birthday party.
Doesn’t matter. There has never been such an obvious “Best Screenplay” winner in history like there is this year with “The Social Network”. That flick was all script and the best film of the year.
Sorry, but Social Network is probably the most overrated movie of the year.
Not probably, it really is!

With all of those films ineligible, these are my predictions for the WGA Awards.
Original: Black Swan, Easy A, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right.
Adapted: Rabbit Hole, Shutter Island, The Social Network, The Town, True Grit.
I think Easy A has a good chance here just because of all the other films that were deemed ineligible. The Writers Guild also likes to nominate bigger films with a box office success, like past nominees like The Hangover, Avatar, Star Trek, Knocked Up, The Devil Wears Prada, The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Mean Girls. That’s why I think Easy A and Shutter Island have a good chance. However they will be edged out at the Oscars by films like Another Year, Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech, Ghost Writer, and Winter’s Bone.
Is The Social Netowk an adapted screenply?
I didn’t realize that
It is. It was based on the book “The Accidental Billionaire”.
Damn, Jalal, I hope you are right about “Easy A”. If the field weren’t so crowded, I would easily cheer for Emma Stone to be considered for a Best Actress Oscar nomination. What a smart, witty and charming performance that was. I know people might think it is slight but what she did in that film is not easy to do..at all!
I don’t see Easy A, Shutter Island, or Rabbit Hole getting those nominations, but with so many omissions this year, you may be right. Everything else you listed sounds about right.
Easy A is adapted from The Scarlet Letter
THank you JMO! I was hoping I wouldn’t get all the way through the comments on that post without anyone pointed that out.
It is based off of The Scarlet Letter in the same way Black Swan is based off of The Swan Queen but they are both considered Original Screenplays according to the WGA.
This just increased The Social Network’s chances of not only WGA gold, but more importantly: Oscar gold.
I think its stupid to pay attention to ANY of these awards including Oscars. The whole thing has always been and always will be just a mutual admiration society among those that toe the line. I’m not a member of the profession so I could care less. If they want to dance I’ll pay to watch them dance, but don’t involve me with their petty politics.
My first thought: Will this hurt The King’s Speech in a close race (Inception vs. The King’s Speech for Original Screenplay) the way that I think it hurt Inglourious Basterds in a close race (IB vs. The Hurt Locker for Original Screenplay) last year?
Scott Pilgrim should be nominated for an Oscar. Go ahead, laugh me out of the comments, but it deserves some love. Pass around a petition, tell everyone. It’s time someone loves Scott. VIVA LA REVOLUCION!!
No laughing dear John. ScottPilgrim4Oscarnod, party of two.
Scott Pilgram will likely land on several lists as one of the worst movies of the year.
Spelling it right might have helped your opinion. Oh well. You’re wrong, anyway.
