Steven Soderbergh serious about retiring, says Matt Damon

matt-damon-soderberghImage Credit: Jeffrey Ufberg/Wireimage.com; Joe Corrigan/Getty ImagesSteven Soderbergh first spoke about his desire to fold up his director’s chair almost two years ago, and if you believe Matt Damon, the director wasn’t talking Cher-style retirement. He wants to retire… for real.

In an interview with the L.A. Times, Damon said Soderbergh is “getting closer” to calling it quits because the director has grown “exhausted” with filmmaking. Originally, Soderbergh had expressed plans to pack it up around the 25th anniversary of his filmmaking career, and, as it turns out, he might do just that.

According to the actor, Soderbergh hopes to complete possibly two more movies — Liberace (in which Damon will star) and a project with George Clooney (which could be The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) — before pursuing a career in painting. Damon may or may not have been kidding about the latter. We’re honestly not sure.

UPDATE: Soderbergh joked through his rep: “I’m simply announcing my retirement early so that all the various film organizations can get their lifetime achievement awards lined up.”

'TRON: Legacy' and 'Lost' writers discuss rebooting the sci-fi landmark and their new TV projects

TRON-LEGACYImage Credit: DisneyFor most of Lost’s six seasons, the writing team of Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis played a pivotal role in plotting the adventures of Jack Shephard and castaway company as they struggled to find redemption on a mysterious, light-imbued island that roamed the grid of reality. But for the final three years of producing the now-concluded drama, the scribes were moonlighting in another luminous, down-the-rabbit-hole fantasyland, endeavoring to bring it — or rather, re-introduce it — to the masses. That ambition reached fruition last weekend when Disney’s TRON: Legacy opened in theaters and scored a solid $44 million at the box office. The film –- directed by highly touted commercial helmer Joseph Kosinski and starring Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Jeff Bridges in two lookalike roles — figures to be one of the biggest attractions of the holiday weekend. Think of it as the season’s coolest Christmas light display.

For Horowitz, 39 and from New York, and Kitsis, 39 and from Minneapolis, TRON: Legacy marks the beginning of major new phase of their Hollywood lives, one certainly made possible by the success of Lost. They’re also writing the script for Universal Pictures’ Ouija, an adventure/fantasy due in 2012 (and inspired by the Hasbro board game) that the scribes describe as “Indiana Jones with spirits.” READ FULL STORY »

'Cedar Rapids' trailer: Ed Helms, John C. Reilly party down

Categories: Movie Trailers

Cedar Rapids may be pushing its cred — Sundance selection, it’s a Fox Searchlight movie, the costuming is ostensibly drab and unflattering — but it sure looks like a mainstream goofball comedy to me. Come for Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, and Rob Corddry being silly; stay for Isiah Whitlock Jr. making a joke about The Wire. And Anne Heche as a red-head. (And Alia Shawkat as a prostitute.) Martin Scorsese and Taylor Hackford criticize jailing of Iranian filmmakers

jafar-panahiImage Credit: Atta Kenare/AFP/Getty ImagesHollywood peers of imprisoned Iranian filmmakers, Jafar Panahi (left) and Mohammad Rasoulof, rallied to their defense after they were sentenced to six years in prison. Yesterday, Martin Scorsese released a statement of support, saying, “I was shocked and disheartened by the news of Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof’s conviction and sentencing. It’s depressing to imagine a society with so little faith in its own citizens that it feels compelled to lock up anyone with a contrary opinion. As filmmakers, we all need to stand up for Panahi and Rasoulof. We should applaud their courage and campaign aggressively for their immediate release.”

Taylor Hackford, president of the Directors Guild of America, also spoke out, saying, “We are outraged by this attempt to lock away and silence Mr. Panahi, a world-renowned filmmaker, along with his fellow filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof who was similarly sentenced. READ FULL STORY »

Categories: Movie Biz, Music Biz

In the largest raid on counterfeit goods in Los Angeles history, the city’s Anti-Piracy Task Force arrested 10 people and seized more than $4 million worth of pirated product. The operation, dubbed Operation Chimney Sweep, is part of a stepped-up effort to battle the production and sale of illegally copied music, movies, and apparel. “This should serve as a wake up call, not only to the criminals that produce and sell these illegal goods, but to all of the holiday shoppers out there,” said City Controller Wendy Greuel. “Piracy is serious business, but we are determined to sweep it out of Los Angeles.”

UPDATE: Steven Spielberg not advising Nancy Pelosi

spielberg-pelosiImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosThe Washington Post suggested today that director Steven Spielberg is advising outgoing Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, on ways to rebrand the House of Representatives’ Democrats, who suffered a crushing defeat in November. But according to Spielberg spokesperson Marvin Levy, the Hollywood titan is doing no such thing. “I can say as a long-time spokesman for Steven that he has made it his career to direct actors, not political figures.”

MPAA rejects R-rating appeal for on-line predator drama 'Trust'

Categories: Film, Movie Biz

Shortly after overturning an NC-17 rating for Blue Valentine, the Motion Picture Association’s ratings board rejected an appeal to reverse its decision to give an R-rating to the on-line predator drama Trust. The MPAA gave the film, which is directed by David Schwimmer and stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, and Viola Davis, an R rating for “disturbing material involving the rape of a teen, language, sexual content and some violence.” The filmmakers had appealed for a PG-13 rating for the movie, which chronicles a family’s upheaval when the 14-year-old daughter is preyed upon and attacked by an on-line stalker, arguing that more teens should be made aware of the dangers of cyber predators.
