Stephen King's 'The Stand' being made into feature film

Categories: Film, Movie Biz

Stephen King‘s 1978 novel The Stand is being made into a feature film, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. and CBS Films will reportedly co-develop and co-produce the feature, and King is said to be involved in some way as well. The novel, about a group of survivors living in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by a super virus, was previously made into an eight-hour ABC miniseries (featuring Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Ruby Dee, and Gary Sinise) in 1994, and Marvel has recently adapted the story into a successful comic book series.

News of a Stand film follows last year’s announcement that Universal will produce three films and an NBC series based on King’s The Dark Tower. Ron Howard, who will direct the first film and the first season of the TV show, has offered the lead role of Roland Deschain to Javier Bardem.

Christopher Nolan: 'Dark Knight Rises' shoots in May

At a tribute for Christopher Nolan at the Santa Barbara Film Festival Sunday night, the Inception director revealed that his third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, will begin production in May, according to ComingSoon.net. “We’ve worked on it a long time — [writer] David Goyer and myself. We’re about 12 weeks away from shooting.” Nolan also told the moderator that he ultimately returned for a third and, most likely, final Batman film, because, “It was about finishing the story.”

Tom Hooper on PG-13 'King's Speech': 'I wouldn't support cutting the film in any way' -- EXCLUSIVE

tom-hooperImage Credit: Laurie Sparham‘The King’s Speech’ emerged from the weekend as the new Oscar favorite after the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild both awarded it their top prizes. But director Tom Hooper expressed skepticism about a reported plan by The Weinstein Company to release a re-cut version of the film, minimizing profanity, that would appeal to a wider PG-13 audience. Before Saturday’s DGA Awards, Hooper told EW, “I wouldn’t support cutting the film in any way. I think we looked at whether it’s possible to bleep out the f—s and stuff, but I’m not going to actually cut that part.” Hooper clarified that no decisions have been made yet; only that TWC was considering it. When asked if the PG-13 edit would broaden the audience, Hooper reiterated, “I’m not going to cut the film.” READ FULL STORY »

Sundance: Why everyone is suddenly bullish on independent film. Plus, 'Life in a Day' and the brilliant 'Bobby Fischer Against the World'

Sundance-SnowflakeIf I had to sum up the buzz at Sundance this year in a single sentence, it would be this: Independent film is back. On a literal level, that sounds like the most trumped up of buzzy catch phrases — a lurch for positivity at a festival that, each year, needs a hook, a scenario, on which to hang its identity. Independent film, of course, never went away. That big blue snowflake on the right was the Sundance logo this year, and before each screening, a looped animated version of it revealed that it’s made up of a hundred tiny images: icons like the Blair Witch wood-cross and the rabbit from Donnie Darko and the pie from Waitress — a testament to all the movies, and not just the breakout smashes, that have emerged from this festival over the last two decades and found a place in the culture. Even during the supposed “lean” years of 2009 and 2010, the flow of art never stopped. The 2009 Sundance festival gave us Precious and An Education and (500) Days of Summer; last year gave us The Kids Are All Right and Winter’s Bone and Exit Through the Gift Shop. READ FULL STORY »

Box office report: 'The Rite' possesses the top spot with $15 mil

Categories: Box Office, Movie Biz

RITE-2Anthony Hopkins’ The Rite pulled in some scary numbers, but nothing truly terrifying, taking the weekend with $15 million. In fact, it’s less than half what Hopkins’ previous first-quarter horror film, last year’s The Wolfman, saw in its first weekend. And that movie only barely made it into second place in a crowded February frame that also included Valentine’s Day and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. As if we needed more evidence that, so far, 2011 has been a lean year for Hollywood. Hopefully the box office will thaw out once the ground does. READ FULL STORY »

Superman found: 'Tudors' star Henry Cavill cast

Henry-Cavill-SupermanImage Credit: Warner Bros. Entertainment Henry Cavill, 27, best known for playing Charles Brandon on Showtime’s The Tudors, has been cast as Clark Kent/Superman in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder, Warner Bros. announced today. “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder says in the release. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” The film is expected to hit theaters in December 2012. David S. Goyer is writing the script, based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Inception, who is among the movie’s producers.

Cavill was at the top of EW’s list of contenders last October. The British actor had been in the running for 2006′s Superman Returns, which ultimately starred Brandon Routh.  READ FULL STORY »

Sundance: Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson, and Terrence Howard on 'The Ledge'

Ledge-Liv-Tyler-HunnamImage Credit: Cook AllenderOne of the most high-profile sales at Sundance this year was IFC’s purchase of The Ledge, an ensemble drama exploring issues of faith wrapped inside a romantic thriller. At the start of the film, a young man named Gavin (played by British actor Charlie Hunnam) steps out onto a ledge high above Baton Rouge. Soon a police detective (Terrence Howard) begins trying to talk him down, and we soon learn that Gavin is not on the ledge by choice. In flashbacks we see that he’s developed a relationship with his married neighbor (Liv Tyler) after befriending her and her deeply religious husband (Patrick Wilson).

The Ledge was certainly one of the more polarizing entries at Sundance this year. But the cast was in great spirits when they stopped by our EW photo and digital studio. Here I talk to Howard, Wilson, Tyler, costar Christopher Gorham, and director Matthew Chapman (star Hunnam couldn’t make it to Park City) about how they lightened the mood during the intense shoot and whether they actually filmed the movie on a real ledge. (Short answer: Yes.) READ FULL STORY »

Sundance: The Awards Ceremony, featuring Tim Blake Nelson as a wooden snowflake

Tim-Blake-NelsonImage Credit: Jemal Countess/Getty ImagesThe Sundance Film Festival Awards Ceremony is the Road Runner of award shows. While other award programs take their time to add dance numbers, film montages, and In Memoriam tributes, Sundance was all business Saturday night as the festival raced through its 26 awards in just 90 minutes. Award recipients were asked to limit their acceptance speeches to one minute, and lo and behold, nearly all of them complied. Maybe that’s because the event’s open bar would reopen as soon as the show concluded; but, more likely, it’s because these winners are up-and-coming indie filmmakers who were just happy to even be invited to the festival. They had no egos to stroke. Rather, the speeches consisted of refreshingly genuine gratitude — both for Sundance itself and for the world of independent filmmaking. Here’s the full list of winners, and below, a few highlights from the Park City, Utah ceremony: READ FULL STORY »
